Windrush generation dementia healthcare discrimination pre-2000

Hi, I’ve heard and read a lot about the later “hostile environment” treatment of Windrush Generation members regarding healthcare services... but was this the case 20+ years ago as well?

Does any one have any experiences to share? (Or recollections from relatives?) For example of being refused access to care and benefits pre or around the year 2000? Especially in terms of dementia/Alzheimer’s care / benefits / support etc

Would be grateful and interested for any responses or pointers for further research.

Thanks

Hello, op
Akala researched a lot re the Windrush generation and the way they were treated. Might be worth looking him up 😀

I’m sorry OP I don’t really have anything useful to add. Most of my elderly Windrush generation family members chose to go back home upon retirement so they were already there when their health started to decline. I haven’t asked so could be completely wrong, but the impression I got with my grandparents, great-aunt and uncles is that it was motivated by a genuine desire to be there more than anything else.

Thank you for your reply, I’ve just ordered “Natives” - the google preview looked really good. Such a great writer.

I can can imagine many were wanting to return “home” even if home was somewhere they hadn’t been back to for 50 years. And sad to think that many never even got to travel back for holidays because they didn’t have the documents let alone funds.
I appreciate your reply, thank you.
