Devon - any experience?

I have long thought of moving to Devon - but worried about racism there, as its less diverse. Does anyone have experience of racism. How is it?

I don't have any personal experience but my cousin used to live in South Devon and the racism was horrific, she regularly was abused in the street and she left after 6 months. It's a very white county so naturally racism is more common. Exeter and Plymouth are more diverse but both still over 90% white.
I would 100% avoid rural areas if you're set on moving to Devon though.

My dd went for an open day in Exeter and ruled it out because she felt so uncomfortable.

Not black but I am mixed race (Hispanic, and would never pass for white, am sometimes asked if I'm Indian) and have lived in Devon for about 8 years. I'm near Exeter but have always lived in the surrounding villages. No issues at all, but I'm speaking as a brown person, so YMMV

Tbh they'd accept a 'Indian looking' person more than a black so maybe that's why you haven't had issues. We black people are not really wanted anywhere where there isn't already a black populace sad but true.

Sorry for taking long to reply - thanks for the advice - mixed bag so need to visit and gauge it.

Hi, I live in a large Devon city with my family. We moved from London 7 years ago. I have been asked the where are you from really from, thankfully only once. But no other racism personally but of course it exists.
I feel comfortable where we are but know of friends who are more rural that don't feel relaxed but of course there will be others that do.
Please do visit, that's what we did for a number of years before moving.
We love living here, close to beaches, national parks, kids can walk to local amenities. Jobs are lower paid and housing expensive, specially South Devon. Transportation is not extensive or reliable.
