Bonnets

Hi all,

I have recently started sleeping in a bonnet, having not been brought up with them. Wavy hair (2B, mixed race).

Can anyone advise what I'm doing wrong, please, as it doesn't stay on? 90% of mornings when I wake up, it's rolled off and lying somewhere in the bed.

It seems tight enough when I put it on, I wasn't aware before this that I had an excessive amount of movement in my sleep!

The bonnet is satin (because I didn't want to splash out on silk for my first experiment) with an elasticated band, pillow cases are cotton.

Is there some knack to this that I don't know? Should I be doing something to my hair before I put it on (I've been leaving it down, untreated)? Should I be pinning the bonnet on? What's going wrong?!

Buy a silk scarf instead or a silk pillowcase

For bonnets, know your size or buy one you can adjust.

The same happens to me. I have both silk and satin.

I did think about a silk pillowcase because a friend has a business selling accessories for black families and that's in her range whereas bonnets aren't, but I thought something more transportable might be a better option.

I'll look out for something adjustable.

I'm not sure a silk scarf would work because they don't even stay on during the day!

But thanks for the suggestions.

Bonnets nearly always slip off, for me anyway! Try a pair of normal tights and use the “legs” to wrap around your head. Tights always stay on.

Reminds me of a Fascinating Aida comic song extolling the many uses of tights. They were already deployed in our house when the kids were young to hold oats to soothe chicken pox. And I used them years ago as an under layer for daytime headwraps. Truly, tights can do everything! Although I did think that the silk/satin bonnets were meant to be gentle on hair. Maybe my hair needs to be told, gentle doesn't work on it 😆
