I've asked a few parents about kumon and quite a few parents are against it. Anyone joined and had good experiences?

Following with interest. Currently using explore learning.

Negatives I've heard re Kumon are:

Lots of repetition which some children get bored of. I can see benefits of repetition though.

Major focus on speed which isn't for every child as some can get stressed by it.

They essentially just print out bunches of worksheets which can be accessed for free online (i.e. similar ones)

They don't follow the national curriculum.

My personal issues with explore are

  • all computer based.
  • very little actual tuition occurs because each tutor has a group of children to support so if child gets stuck they have to wait for a tutor to support them and then the tutor moves on after few minutes

I think the IT system is very smart and I like the wide range of questions it asks. I would prefer to pay for the IT package and support my child myself using that alone. I'm not convinced that much actual tutoring goes on.
