Nick Bostrom … So, so disappointing.

I’ve followed his doings for more than a decade now, and first came to the topic of existential risk through his writing. But perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised.

Not sure I believe I’m the only MN poster here who cares about the future of the world - or their own place in it …

What is his evidence for this allegation? Does he give clear peer reviewed data?

No. If you read the third extract he says ‘based on what I have read, I think it is probable that …’.

I cannot tell you how often I have considered applying to the institute he is attached to, for some minor interdisciplinary thing or other - not realising that I would never have stood a chance. Not realising that all the decades of existential risk talk was only geared to saving people who are not me.

I could fucking cry.

Oh come on, that whole transhuman movement is very Musk, white boy bubble, have no fucking clue about women or diversity, notice how his original statement places black people outside of 'mankind'.

My partner was awarded funding for a PhD and taught in University in a humanities area, where you'd think prof and students were more progressive, they aren't. More often than not, academic black people are seen as the exception by white people , even highly educated thinkers like Bostrom still lap up white institutionalised notions of supremacy.

Its something I have to re-educate my DC about everyday, because its everywhere and continues to be so, despite 'noises' of progression.

So no, I'm not disappointed by Bostrom, I'm never 'disappointed' when I discover a white man believes in white supremacy, the surprise is when anyone doesn't buy into the shit, be they black or white.

I’m honestly not obsessed. But this discussion today on religion and AI was interesting. From about 14 minutes in. Bostrom does concede that it’s going to need all the world’s religious thought, not just his ‘the West’s’.
