Hello,

Just wondered if anyone is from Nottinghamshire. I live in a small town in north Notts. I have lived there my whole life. Just find living here a rough at the moment, nothing major has happened but I'm sick of feeling uncomfortable in my skin. Be great to talk.

I’m from there, spent 25 years living there. Are you in/near the Mansfield area?

Hello, yes I'm around the Mansfield area. Do you still live there? What is your experience? Thank you for replying

Fortunately no, I don’t. Haven’t for around 11 years. I occasionally go back to visit my brother.

Its an unpleasant place to live, in my experience. Not just the in your face racism, but the general vibe of the place. No opportunities, extreme deprivation, etc.

You managed to get away, I don't blame you. It's still very deprived and people are struck in their ways. I wouldn't have a clue where to move to. Frighten of jumping of the frying pan into the fire.

I know what you mean - I grew up somewhere not far from there with a similar vibe and it's horrible for your wellbeing. Can you find some social groups in the nearest big city/town? Black Girls Hike have local groups (check Facebook) and may have one in the East Mids/South Yorks that organises walks if you could get out to one of those and find solidarity in likeminded people

Hello, so sorry for late reply, I have just seen it. Yes I know Huthwaite, how are you finding it?

Its OK. Weird vibes from people but expected in a place like this. What about you?

Girlunfamilar · 08/02/2023 11:38

Lived here my whole life, I just wanted to see if I am over reacting or that there is a underlying feeling. I just feel uncomfortable, had it my whole life on some level or another.

You're definitely not overreacting. My partner has a very different experience when she goes out alone compared to when I'm with her. She's white and she sees it. It wasn't until she moved there that she really saw how racism and microagressions present themselves. It's more easily overlooked in cities. But when you're somewhere where its "spot the black person" its in your face.

Girlunfamilar · 08/02/2023 12:49

Do you find that some people are just not friendly? I see them friendly with others and then almost cold with me. I have had enough to be honest. Thank you for replying Smile

Yes!! Not friendly at all. I get ignored. Even at checkouts no engagement at all. It makes me feel uncomfortable going in anywhere around here. It's so backward. Glad I could validate your feelings
