Hi I just wanted what I hope will be a safe space for a massive brag.

I've worked hard since leaving uni - often being the only black girl in the company.
Done ok for myself, had two kids and went back to working full time. Even though I've had some shitty/racist bosses, and people who haven't given me the time of day, somehow I've finally got a job that enables me to have a nice company car.
A really nice one.
It got delivered yesterday and it's beautiful. And I feel really proud of myself but don't want to go on about it because I know life is hard for lots of people.

And today I saw a black guy in a car park - in the same brand car and he wound the window down and went nice car!
And I think the subtext was - it's good to see a black girl driving a nice car. Not in a patronising way - more like in a good for you kind of way.

And I just feel really proud. For me, and just black professionals in general.

Does anybody else understand what I mean.
I hope this doesn't come across in the wrong way, I just want to jump up and down with excitement and tell my 21 year old self that it did all work out.

That’s amazing, hope you savour every moment in your new car!

At school there was only two of us who were mixed race/black and we did very well for ourselves. We’re due a reunion this year so it’ll be an opportunity for us to brag too Grin. It does feel good and we’re an example to younger girls.

Brag away and enjoy the fruits of your labour Wine

Happy to say a huge Well Done!!! All your hard work had paid off. Congratulations and, yes, definitely have a good jump up and down!

accidentallymumming · 15/01/2022 19:22

Oh Thankyou. I really appreciate your responses. And @Tillsforthrills you're right.
My 3 year old said to me this morning - when I grow up mummy I'm going to get a x car just like you.
And my heart swelled. For her to know that it's possible and achievable.

Amazing! Happy for you.
Knowing your doing it for yourself with your little ones eyes watching you make it all worth it. The man in the car park is that reminder that 'you got this!'

So proud of you sister xxx

Denzelstowel · 19/01/2022 11:40

Great news, be proud and enjoy your success you have worked for it and probably made sacrifices along the way. I love to hear news like this and it's a shame that you have to clarify and almost apologise in case someone takes it the wrong way.l, but I do understand why you did that. I also love to hear when young black men are doing well in their lives, it makes my heart swell as they often come up against so many barriers - well done!

SantoPalo · 19/01/2022 21:18

Well done hun, enjoy and stay proud of your achievements

PompomDahlia · 20/01/2022 15:14

Enjoy your gorgeous car and congratulations on your success! It brings me joy to see other black women thriving - personally and professionally

NashvilleQueen · 20/01/2022 15:37

Jump away! You've every right to be proud of your achievements and I am delighted for you.

I am a white middle class woman in a leadership role. I see it as a key part of my role to give a hand up to younger women, especially women of colour, and to recognise the benefits of a diverse representative workforce. I hope this is just the start for you OP.

notanaturalmum · 21/01/2022 11:19

@NashvilleQueen for clarity, could you just expand on what you mean by hand up?

I would hate to think that you favoured any particular candidate over another for anything other than their ability to do the job.

I'm absolutely sure you don't mean that.
And I'll take the comment in the spirit that was intended.
Thankyou.

FYI I am the OP. I changed my username for the original post because I was scared I'd get flamed for flouting my successes.
But I don't mind now. You've all been so kind.

alilstressed · 25/01/2022 04:27

Congratulations! Take your flowers, you deserve them!

10Minutestobedtime · 01/02/2022 02:21

How exciting OP, well done you! We should celebrate our successes!
