I've been absent from this board for a while but just want to say that I hope you're all enjoying a lovely Christmas and wish you all that is good for the new year!

Just heard about Desmond Tutu's death and watched a clip about his life which had some lovely accompanying music presumed to be South African.

Apart from the well known Miriam Makeba and Ladysmith Black Mambazo I'm not familiar with south african music and it would be nice to hear of your favourite singers/songs.

Give Mango Grove a listen, especially a song called Special Star. Smile. They are pretty retro though being a band from the 90s.

I'm old so not great on current bands, hopefully other mumsnetters can give more suggestions.

I am not South African, but love the following artists:

Lebo Mathosa
Brenda Fassie
Yvonne Chaka Chaka
Lucky Dube

From Zimbabwe - Jah Prayzah
From Tanzania - Diamond Platnumz

And, of course, Master K G - Jeruselama

I quite like kwaito, when I was a student Mandoza and TKZee were huge so I like listening to their songs it takes me right back to those days!. Sadly Mandoza died
a few years ago. More mainstream is Jonny Clegg (he was white though) and Savuka. Their song ‘Crossroads’ is so beautiful I always want to cry when I listen to it. If you like Jazz give Hugh Masakela a listen he is a legend. I am white too, hope it was ok to post here x

I love Emtee's Thankyou

Perching · 26/12/2021 12:33

Sorry not Crossroads it’s The Crossing by Jonny Clegg and Savuka

TerraNovaTwo · 26/12/2021 12:35

As above, but also:

Johnny Clegg and Juluka/Savuka
Sipho Mcunu (Johnny Clegg's best friend and band mate)
Master KG - Jerusalema
Ndlovu Youth Choir
Soweto Gospel Choir

Try Amapiano - a music genre - good at times for gym sessions

NotSoNewAndShiny · 26/12/2021 12:55

It's been a while, names escape me now but I second Brenda Fassie, Lucky Dube, Hugh Masekela and Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

RIP Desmond Tutu.Flowers

I actually love South African House music! Check it out if you have time.

Jamdown123 · 26/12/2021 13:54

Desmond Tutu is another true loss to black people. He did so much and I found I respected his statements, was never tense just hoping for him not to say something out of turn in a way that I find myself doing when watching some black public figures speak (I don't want to give examples.that might be mean because I think people do their best ) . I found him a reliable, steady statesman, really. Always spot on.

A true loss.

Afro-House originates from South Africa and is pretty good; I hate UK house music, but love this kind!

This is pretty typical:

Forgot the legendary Miriam Makeba. (Incidentally, was married to High Masekela at some point).
