Black mumsnetters, I know we have some tasty dishes in our various cultures. Go on, tell me your favourite(s) from any Black culture/country/ethnicity (Doesn't have to be yours either).

I have many favourites but I was just talking about these two dishes with someone, so I'm going to write them here.

Jamaican Curry Goat with white rice. Not keen on peas. (I've learned the curry goat orginated from the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia but the 'version' I've always known is the Jamaican one. I do love me some lamb/goat/chicken curry and some Biryani).

Nigerian Fried Rice. (Sorry Jollof rice lovers but No! - and that's a complete sentence too Grin)

Both rice dishes can be had with or without plantain. I don't mind either way. I just looove them! (I like visuals so here are some pics).

Over to you...

Bake and saltfish for me.

I'm English born, as were my parents. So I love a Sunday roast!

My grandad used to make a version of this saltfish dish for me every Sunday. I would call in after I had been to church.
I really want some now!

I never turn down saltfish! Grin

I love the taste of curry goat, however every time I've had it, my teeth get surprised by random bones, which dampens my enjoyment somewhat.

Proper jerk chicken I could eat all day, it's so tasty. That combined with coconut rice and peas I find really yummy.

Nigerian suya is another personal favourite for me, so delicious.

Tabbouleh is my favourite salad type dish, though I'm not sure what country it originates from. Add pomegranate seeds, and it tastes divine.

Feelingoood · 22/12/2021 23:39

Hope no one minds if I hop on for recipe inspiration. The salt fish recipe looks great.

BlackandGreen · 22/12/2021 23:51

Feelinggood If you try the saltfish recipe, be sure to wash and boil to remove the excess salt in the dried fish, as it says in the article. I steep it overnight like my grandad used to. Smile

BlackandGreen · 22/12/2021 23:55

Starseeking I've not tasted Nigerian suya, off to investigate!

Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to some black cake this Christmas.

I love tabbouleh too! Yes yes to the pomegranate seeds ( I do buy them in a pot though as the whole pomegranate is a faff). I love it with a massive blob of humus and scooped all up with flatbread.

Thanks blackandgreen!
Merry Christmas 🎄

NotSoNewAndShiny · 26/12/2021 12:51

Fried plantain and eggs (fried alone or as egg stew or egg sauce - all slightly different ways of making the eggs).

I love fried rice and curry goat as well.Grin

ImaginaryDragon · 19/12/2022 17:40

Saltfish and ackee and fried dumplings
Pigs tail soup.

Bullah

ImaginaryDragon · 19/12/2022 17:41

Oh the shame I spelt Bulla with an H!

alilstressed · 27/12/2022 08:29

Ackee and saltfish with toasted hard do bread
Curry goat with roti
Jollof rice, eforiro and egusi
Pudding and souse

Maggiethecat · 27/12/2022 09:28

This time of year - Christmas cake (black cake) and sorrel. Nothing sings Christmas to me more than these two.

Breakfast - ackee and salt fish and fried dumplings (or yam/green banana/dumpling) and avocado

Dinner - oxtail and butter beans, curry goat make me very happy but the cooking times do not! Pressure cooking reduces the time but you don’t get the same depth of flavour.

@ImaginaryDragon - I can’t get bulla where I live and have tried making it but it turns out more like gingerbread biscuits 😂

OP, thanks for this thread. Hope everyone has had a lovely Christmas, enjoying some of your favourite foods.!

To the old timers on here, the board seems generally more quiet these days but hope you’ve all been well.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 27/12/2022 09:34

I'm not a Blackmumsnetter but bye heck your making me hungry 😋.
I could eat your cuisine all day everyday 🤷‍♀️🤣

Moobae · 12/02/2023 05:44

I love rice and peas, I think I could just eat it by itself and some oxtail juice or jerk sauce
