First a disclaimer

Just in case this thread pops up in “Active”. This is a contribution to the Black Mumsnetters board which was established to be a safe space for black women and allies to discuss issues of interest black women, from racism to African history, from black hair care to culture-specific issues in relationships. If you feel triggered, nothing here is an attack on you. I would hate for a thread centering black experience to be hijacked so that it ends about centering those who may have hurt feelings because this discussion may be uncomfortable for them. Thank you!

... to admit they are institutionally racist.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/dec/12/uk-police-leaders-debate-public-admission-institutional-racism

As I expect a lot of squatters and trolls to pop up on this thread so I will write a quote from the article:
“Reluctance to admit institutional racism comes from emphasising the comfort of the wrong people over the experience of black people. For this programme to work, it needs the police to have conversations that are uncomfortable for them.”

Last year the Metropolitan police commissioner, Cressida Dick, denied policing was institutionally racist, telling MPs it was “not a label I find helpful”. She said: “I don’t think we’re collectively failing. I don’t think [racism] is a massive systemic problem, I don’t think it’s institutionalised, and more to the point I think we have come such a very, very, very long way.”

Quote from the article above …

Xmas Hmm

I don't like the guy's politics but why has the Met targeted people who have attended his party?

Well now, a lot has happened since you started this thread @RedWingBoots, but I remembered it was here.

Apparently, Sadiq Khan has put Cressida Dick on notice, following publication of the report regarding the despicable behaviour of officers (mostly) based at Charing Cross Police station.

A mayoral spokesperson said Sadiq Khan told Dame Cressida of his anger at "a return to the bad days of the Met of his childhood in the 1970s and 80s"

Among the findings, the report by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) found the officers had joked about rape, domestic violence and killing black children

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-60236588

Charing Cross, will be one of many parts of the Met with this kind of behaviour. Time for her to go.

IOPC Report re Operation Hotton here if anyone is looking for it.

@EchoNan that story just flashed at me on my phone.

Earlier another one did about why they extended Dick's contract by 2 years. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-60229473

These revelations sent a chill through my spine. I will never trust the police from here on and I do not believe any black person should.

EchoNan · 02/02/2022 20:52

An interesting read, thanks for that, @RedWingBoots.

I went on to look up Neil Basu, the possible internal candidate should Cressida Dick go. "Too political" hey? So they still want someone who will do what they are told.

This shit storm is well beyond just putting another person in place no matter how experienced or outspoken.

Jamdown123 · 03/02/2022 18:11

What exactly was the thing about black babies?

One of the things I love about being in majority black countries, say Africa or the Caribbean, is the feeling that the police won't target you just because you're black.

Its so freeing. To see a police officer and not be scared of racism.

EchoNan · 03/02/2022 21:27

I don't feel able to write exactly what was said re the children Jamdown. It's not even replicated in full in the UK press ....including the Daily Mail.

In brief, a written exchange in which a police officer referred to his own father, claiming that he had fatally harmed black children. A short, but graphic, description of what he allegedly did.

There are more detailed references in the UK press to the What's App exchanges about women, which are vile and violent in content. ( As well as many other remarks which are disablist, anti semitic, racist ....all claimed to be "banter".)

I take your point about other police forces such as Africa, where there is a black majority, and as a black person, not having the same fear of racism.

However, I can't say, as a woman, that my dealings with Nigerian police officers was positive. Although some years ago now.

Racist no. Hustling for bribes and misogynistic, definitely. I didn't feel safe with them.

Who guards the guardians? The age old debate.

Jamdown123 · 04/02/2022 19:00

Right, yes. You're so right about police here in UK and elsewhere.

I'm shocked about the messages. Sounds obscene. Ugh

RedWingBoots · 10/02/2022 19:19

Good she's going

Good riddance.

EchoNan · 10/02/2022 20:40

So her fingers were finally prised away from her desk!

Nine of those fourteen officers are still in the Met. Two of them even got promoted.

There needs to be a huge clearout of dodgy cops and zero tolerance.

Including their Fed reps making sure these people get sacked properly and not trying to claim that this shit is " banter".

Some kind of third party reporting needs bringing in, and better protection for the whistleblowers. They aren't the problem, but often end up with their own careers destroyed, for trying to do the right thing.

Sadiq Khan and Priti Patel need to get this sorted. However, I'm not holding my breath.

GreenLunchBox · 15/02/2022 00:57

Of course they won't admit it

That's why the Met federation have today said they are disgusted by Khan 'ousting' Dick

So they object to someone trying to hold them to account and make them change

I was disgusted and upset by their statement today

Bodes well for change, doesn't it? Hmm

emuloc · 15/02/2022 09:22

The usual pushback begins.

EchoNan · 15/02/2022 12:56

The Met Fed reps would do well to get their own house in order.
But they wont.
