Hey BMN,
Just wondering if there were any BMN in chelmsford area? We are looking at nursery's for our DS for late next year and schools and wanted to get some thoughts on schools / nursery

We moved to this area from london (as you do) and want ensure nursery and schools have enough diversity of colour and culture - I'm not expecting london just at least some black teaching staff and children

I'm doing a little hanging around at school times ... but I'm going to get a rep if I'm not careful Hmm

Thanks all x

Just replying to bump, I don’t live in Chelmsford but have similar dilemma of living in home counties and now trying to find somewhere to settle. It’s so hard when you have finding diversity outside of London as a key factor!

We're considering moving to Chelmsford from London this summer, how have you found it?

GillyB2021 · 04/04/2023 15:21

Hi Mamalumi
It's not great but it will do for now. The area it's self if getting a bit more diverse - don't count on a decent black hair shop - back off the London is best
Found a lovely food place for takeaway (even catered for my sons birthday) nursery we found a large chain was best for diversity in the children nothing much in the staff.
I love the space and greenery so for now it will do us. But I miss the London culture... also it's not as bad as many essex places I've lived in ...
welcome !!!

@GillyB2021 thank you so much for getting back to me, I know it's an old thread but really appreciate your insights. Any areas you would recommend to avoid? We're thinking of Springfield /Chelmer Village/Broomfield.

Thanks for the heads up on the hair 😅looks like I'll be making my way into London for that

Genesis does well with black hair but that's about it in Chelmsford.

I used to live in Chelmsford back when I was one of only a handful of black people that lived there. So it's definitely better.

If you have a look on school websites some of them might have pictures still of their staff although many are not doing that now. If you request a visit, look at the staffing board as that will have pictures on it. You'll be able to see quite quickly.

Good luck!

@mamalumi no worries ... it's just popped up - we have been on nursery for about 8months so going well - just a few issues ie why do you celebrate Eid (or mention it at least ) but not black history month.....

Good areas I think - I'm still a novice. I needed to be near the station so ruled out some of your area's we were only advised to avoid Melbourne area. Springfield seems nice, gallleywood was too "new town" for us and Broomfield - lovely bits bit the wrong side of town for us

Good luck and I think you'll like it let me know if you need anything
