She gave a very sobering speech at the conference - could see a lot of delegates sitting up straight, others slinking (in shame?).

Mia is the business and she suffers no fools. Just love to hear her talk. I listened to her COP36 speech and she was hitting the nail on the head as usual.

I loved this video of her too, which is where I started watching her. (There's a full one but this short clip was doing the rounds). Speaking to the hypocrisy of focusing on China's growing influence on the Caribbean and Africa...

This is the full video if someone wants to watch as well. Answering Global questions specifically about Barbados becoming a Republic, plans for the Island and relationship with other countries.

Sorry @Maggiethecat not trying to derail. Watched the COP26 speech and she was on everyone's arses while still gathering them close for a hug (in a manner of speaking). It was brilliant to witness.

Incredible and so admirable. Being and thinking green is not just some middle class western fancy. Many people or islanders have been on the front line and experiencing the effects of climate change for years. I'm glad that Mia with her poise and eloquence was allowed/ permitted to speak truth and life into the conference. I often get the impression from these conferences that it's a 'big boys' ' game; women and especially black women don't have a voice. Glad that she spoke. Love her lipstick too, need to get my deep purple one out again to combat the winter Wink

@AllieTakesOver - that BBC interview was the first I had ever seen of her and was struck by how she didn't mince her words but in a manner free of rancour.

There is something about her that reminds me of the late Jamaican PM Michael Manley - probably her presence and powerful oratory.

What an incredible woman. I'm in awe of her.

Maggiethecat · 17/11/2021 23:14

@TheBlackDarner - she is formidable. She is from a family of politicians and I can imagine that she will have sat at the feet of some of the architects of Barbados' independence and listened to lively political debate about the country's new future.

No wonder that she will be the first PM of the new republic later this month. Nuff respec'

@Maggiethecat How good it must be to live in a place where the PM is an absolute inspiration to young women who can see she looks just like them! It warms the heart.

Maggiethecat · 18/11/2021 08:53

Indeed!

She's brilliant - I wish that we had leadership like hers over here. Incidentally she reminds me so much of some of the elder ladies in my Bajan family - formidable women.

AllieTakesOver · 19/11/2021 10:33

@Maggiethecat I agree.

Also agree I wish we had someone like her here.

Mia is wonderful, articulate, forceful & super intelligent. I used to know her parents and sister very well. If anyone is in Australia and would like to buy some of Elan’s Caribbean Flavours I’m sure she’d be delighted. Lovely lovely family.

BlackandGreen · 21/11/2021 14:54

@LizziesTwin
I don't think I've ever been so thrilled to know someone's met someone before IYSWIM. What a lovely post!
And a great shout out for E.C.F. Grin

A Republic!.
Anyone been watchig the news today? Sandra Mason First President.

(I've been looking in on the Prince Charles speech. I'm not royalist by any means, but I thought he spoke well, and I think, sincerely)

Mia telling Rhianna that she was a national treasure. Her face!

Love Mia Mottley. She's the epitome of grace and class. The world needs more of her.

PippaHugo · 27/12/2021 16:03

She is incredible and insightful! It is such a shame that more world leaders don’t support communism.

It is so forward thinking that ‘ Mottley expressed her sincere congratulations on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC).’
