Racist language in Gilmore Girls...random one

This is a random one as stated in the title, but do you ever have a moment of watching TV or even in real life where you think WTF have I just heard .....

So, watching Gilmore Girls from start to finish and I'm on the last season, episode 18...and Logan says to Rory.....'It's like colonial times except less n*ggers and tricorn hats' - it was really casual and in passing conversation and I can't find anything about it online but I've replayed it many times and it's thrown me. He definitely said the n word!
It's been going round in my head as Gilmore Girls isn't THAT old...many other racist moments in it but that was just so blatant and casual!

I believe he says “like colonial times except less knickers and tricorn hats”

YouJustFoldItIn · 30/10/2021 14:36

many other racist moments in it

like?

MilkywayMonarch22 · 30/10/2021 14:38

See I thought that too but I can't find a script for it anywhere and it really sounds like he says the other word, and the context would fit....really hope he says knickers though as it threw me!
Nonetheless there are other moments in it that are a symptom of the times but are now sexist/racist/homophobic.

How would the context fit for it to be the other N word? He says knickers and tricorn hats- two items of clothing from colonial times.

MilkywayMonarch22 · 30/10/2021 14:41

@YouJustFoldItIn The way Mrs Kim is portrayed as the stereotypical Asian 'tiger mum' ...
The fact that any female black characters are props only....

I actually believe he says “it’s like Colonial Williamsburg” rather than “colonial times”. Colonial Williamsburg being a living museum where the workers dress up in colonial clothing such as knickers and tricorn hats.

MilkywayMonarch22 · 30/10/2021 14:43

Oh thank goodness! Thanks for clarifying @CallMeRisley - the only mention of it I found online was someone else querying if he said the n word! It honestly had me a bit shaken as when I replayed it back 5/6 times I swear that's what I can hear! Maybe it's the accent and the softer ck sound?

It’s mentioned here as a pop culture reference on the wiki fandom for the episode:

gilmoregirls.fandom.com/wiki/Hay_Bale_Maze

Whether there are other undertones of stereotypes of characters etc is another conversation but blatant outright use of the N word would definitely be a bit Shock and Confused

MilkywayMonarch22 · 30/10/2021 14:51

It seems trivial as it's an old tv show but honestly thank you @CallMeRisley - it really disheartens me to enjoy a show and then find racist references in it (a bit like if you were to eat a nice meal and realise it was full of mould)...so for you to have cleared that up for me is great! Thanks for the link also.

Hi, I have just watched Season 7 Episode 18 of Gilmore Girls and it definately IS a racial slur. I am so disappointed. Tricorn hats is a reference to KKK I believe.

As a former actor I alo noticed the actors discomfort and them throwing it away like a kind of Easter egg. I bet it was even debated. But yep what a shock.

UrbanDaisey · 15/08/2025 18:33

Trust your instinct!

You heard right. Don't let anyone explain it away.

DarlingHoldMyHand · 22/08/2025 00:55

A tricorn hat is the kind of hat in this picture (when it uploads). It has 3 corners which is why it's called a "tricorn." A KKK hat is called a "capirote" apparently.

And it would make sense for it to be "knickers" as in the men's trousers - short for knickerbockers. It would be weird for them to casually use the N-word on a 00s TV show like Gilmore Girls and the reference was to Colonial Williamsburg (not "colonial times") which is a historic town in Virginia which is known for being full of mostly white people dressing up as if it were a couple of hundred years ago like in the photo.

I've never seen the programme it's always struck me as been terribly white and smug

GreyBeeplus3 · 17/12/2025 20:18

They probably 'adjusted' the tape. I believe you for one
