She being called out

First a disclaimer

Just in case this thread pops up in “Active”. This is a contribution to the Black Mumsnetters board which was established to be a safe space for black women and allies to discuss issues of interest black women, from racism to African history, from black hair care to culture-specific issues in relationships. If you feel triggered, nothing here is an attack on you. I would hate for a thread centering black experience to be hijacked so that it ends about centering those who may have hurt feelings because this discussion may be uncomfortable for them. Thank you!

At the weekend I was having a discussion with a friend who was saying an MP from a similar background to his needed to be called out.

Anyway today the Equalities minister who doesn't believe in her brief has been called out by another British Nigerian. The government are trying to bury this for obvious reasons.

I think a lot of these are 'he said/she said'. It's extremely easy to set up photos like these and claim they're from someone's WhatsApp account.

So I think the government can easily just ignore this and let it blow over. It's not an airtight exposé, unless they can actually prove it was her and from her phone. Even so, I don't think she's said anything they don't already know she believes. I doubt this would hurt her.

This just feels like a weak set-up.

EchoNan · 23/09/2021 17:40

First plop in suggests they could be an invention.
So just to clear that up.

The WhatsApp messages from Badenoch were sent privately or posted in a group chat called Conservative Friends of Nigeria.

One of the founding members of the group was Funmi Adebayo, a former associate and Conservative supporter. I gather that is the person who put the messages in the public domain.

So the messages are apparently for real.

Kemi Badenoch does not care who she throws under the bus, as long as it serves Kemi Badenoch's ambitions. She has a history of unpleasant underhand behaviour, which includes hacking Harriet Harman's website when Harman was Deputy Leader.

Set up, or not. I do agree that this won't really do her any damage.

She's already a self interested, self seeker. She does quite well for herself out of political barking, when she is told to bark, by her Party.

I'm being very restrained as to what I think about her. I'll probably crack later on. Smile

There's a thread about Kemi Badenoch (and Ben Hunte) on the feminism board:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4351696-Ben-Hunte-is-back-and-gunning-for-Kemi-Badenoch?pg=3

It starts with transgender issues but from page 3 it develops into a wider discussion about race and feminism.

Can still be easily set up. Not saying it is (I don't know if it is) but it looks very weak as evidence, if that's all people have to go with. Anybody can create a 'WhatsApp group' and share supposed leaked messages from it.

It seems obvious why this "reveal" is happening.

I've not said anything regarding the contents or Kemi herself, just that this isn't real proof that she said anything. I'm sure that much should be obvious.

EchoNan · 23/09/2021 19:02

I'll wait for her to say that they are all an invention then.

Starseeking · 23/09/2021 19:44

I don't think this will affect her in the slightest, it's on message. What better way to discredit the lived experience of Black people than to get one of their own to rubbish it. KB is like gold dust to the Torys, and is going nowhere.

I was also thinking something similar, that this could be coming from the Tories in the guise of a leak or set-up, for this very reason.

Who knows? Politics is a dirty and complicated game for everyone involved. I don't take anything at face value.

EchoNan · 23/09/2021 20:33

I get where you are coming from now NotSoNew. I'm just looking at who is reporting this outside of VICE. Spectator, Times, Mail, Sun, BBC oh and Guardian and more. But no comment can I see from KB herself as to truth or lie. Yes, it is strange, now I ponder further on your comments.

Samuel Kasumu has gone as advisor earlier in the year. I had some respect for him. He wasn't a KB fan. He is out of the way now. Mission accomplished, as far as Johnson and co are concerned.

I'm sure the constituents of Saffron Waldon will be enthralled to read these "views".

Hmm

I suspect they are the kind who would vote for a pig if it had a blue rosette on it.

I wish I hadn't clicked on that link. It was a waste of my time , and no it didn't develop into anything productive. Typical mumsnet style 😒

EchoNan · 24/09/2021 09:29

Not productive at all debbrianna, but no surprise. Same old stuff.

So this is all over the media now. Kemi Badenoch hasn't denied saying this. She really is not arsed. She is riding high on the political gravy train. ( For as long as she is useful, which will be for some time yet).

Afua Hirsch
“Imperial systems have always relied on the complicity of a small number of colonised people to invest in the status quo. Applies to the mental colonisation of today’s black Tories as much as the literal co-option of the black elites in the Empire. Nothing new. By design. But triggering AF.”

Did anyone see her piece on the Black History Month site?
(I'm heaving a big sigh.)

What's significant to me, is what she doesn't talk about.

Minister of State for Equalities "sigh", it's so obvious this role is just a stepping stone for her. I wonder what cabinet role she's aiming to secure.
