I’ve just binge watched all 5 seasons and absolutely loved every episode. The whole church shenanigans behind the seasons it could’ve been my church Grin.

I've not watched it GreenLeafs but lining it up now for my next binge.
Thanks for the tip, I'm looking forward to it. Smile

Ooh! You won’t regret it. Thought it was a bit ‘of sorts’ to begin with but then it gathered speed Grin.

I'll report back! Promise! Even though I am late to it.
It's got good reviews, I've been lurking about on the likes of RottenTomatoes Grin

Watched and loved it! Perfect soapy drama but with a really good cast. I loved the outfits and sets. It was great representation too.

I’m also a huge fan of Queen Sugar which I watched on holiday in the US - also an Oprah Winfrey production I think, so good quality drama about a black family but annoyingly it isn’t shown here so I’ve tried figuring out how to access it over here!

Plumtree391 · 31/08/2021 22:32

I loved it too; apart from the uncle, they were very likeable and believably human characters. The first two series were the best, it did become a bit 'soap opera-ish' later on but I still enjoyed it.

Wow, that 'First Lady', she was a star! I'd have loved the Bishop to be my dad.

GreenLeafs · 31/08/2021 23:28

@EchoNan Didn’t even check on Rotten, just stumbled upon it and started watching and was hooked. Make sure you report back!

@PompomDahlia My favourite was Deborah Winans. She was a total queen! I love that they used a full figured woman that just got sexier as the story unfolded. Her dresses were so lovely, none were below the knee, waist cinched in perfectly with killer heels. Very unusual!

Plum Yes the First Lady was formidable, wouldn’t want to cross her. The bishop....aaah! Bless him.

@PompomDahlia I haven’t heard of Queen Sugar. I’ll keep my eyes open for that one.

I've started watching. Finished first episode. This is going to have me glued.
Woah! Serious bad scary vibes from Uncle man.

GreenLeafs · 01/09/2021 21:28

@EchoNan Do enjoy Wink.

It's amazing. Binged the lot on my pre pandemic commute. Love the clothes and the houses. My family are Pentecostals and there is so much that rings true (on a slightly lower-fi scale). It's so refreshing to see Black Women looking unapologetically fabulous Grin

PompomDahlia · 02/09/2021 10:30

Enjoy it @EchoNan!

Yes, Lady Mae is a brilliant character and the outfits are always on point!

I’m looking for a church to join currently and part of me is tempted by something with the Greenleaf style experience!

GreenLeafs · 02/09/2021 16:26

@Popkids To be honey, EVERYTHING about the church rings true for me, sadly. It just confirmed all my suspicious about church succession in Pentecostals and how it’s all run like a business corporation

‘Honest’ not honey.

My family church was run by a lovely husband and wife team who were kind, generous and unshowy. After they retired, the broader UK church then joined US church group and we got a taste of the Greenleaf. Lots of merch, new songs etc.

I'm not a churchgoer anymore so no idea of any scandals. I have a good friend who's a CofE vicar and he makes his Diocese sound like House of Cards Grin

alilstressed · 07/09/2021 19:46

Love Greenleaf!! And Lady Mae, whooo!!! What a character!

PompomDahlia · 07/09/2021 21:13

If anyone is handy with technology, Queen Sugar is available on Apple TV on the US site. I've managed to pick it up again after being reminded on this thread and it's absolutely brilliant - family drama with a bit of a history lesson

Plumtree391 · 07/09/2021 21:24

Ah yes but the Bishop was a true gem. What a lovely dad and grandfather!

TeaAddict235 · 15/09/2021 15:49

Love love love Greenleaf. It was my pregnancy binge programme. Love the Bishop.

Jamdown123 · 16/09/2021 15:31

I kind of binged it on a previous mat leave.

People seem love Last Mae. When I last saw it she was busy verbally walloping her sister, Oprah Winfrey, for sleeping with her husband, and Oprah was wailing about colorise in the family, and the beautiful prodigal daughter was losing her daughter to her white ex husband.

Go on, save 48 hours of my life and tell me what happens after that! Does the daigter's gay husband get custody of the child?! Does the nonce uncle's memory die with him?

TELL MEE!!!!

Oh, and Power, can someone tell me how Angela managed to die? Thought she was a key character. I'm guessing the son turned bad boy galore.

Please just give me the spoilers so I don't use hours of my life on these shows when I seriously have things to do!!!

Jamdown123 · 16/09/2021 15:32

Lady Mae, not last Mae.

Colorism. This damned keyboard!

PompomDahlia · 19/09/2021 19:43

@Jamdown123 is Power any good? As if I don’t have enough shows lined up Grin

Jamdown123 · 19/09/2021 21:05

Hi,

I watched the first series and then stopped.Oh wait, maybe I watched a bit of the second. It concerned me that the sex scenes really felt like soft porn, they were quite obvious and showy. Then I just discovered better shows like True Detective etc. But I spoke to some black women in the office maybe 2 years ago and they said some of the main characters had died and I was really curious about that.

so, I wouldn't recommend it long term, but maybe the first series, it was one of those for me, went little off-piste.
