How is it in your house when a british athlete is up against someone from the country of your family heritage?

@JayDot500

Mi deyah! But recent job change and suddenly I have less time. I always have time for the Olympics Grin
Good to hear you're well!

New job coming up for me too - expect I will be out of sight for a while 😩

@JayDot500 lovely to see you posting, I hope the job goes well.
@Maggiethecat that clip is hilarious, that guy made me laugh!

Just back for the race!

TokyoSushi · 31/07/2021 13:54

Yikes, there's no love lost between Shelly Ann & Elaine is there?!

EchoNan · 31/07/2021 13:58

@TokyoSushi Frosty as hell isn't it?
Woah! history there.

Maggiethecat · 31/07/2021 13:58

Maggie, the yams have it! Grin

Well run team GB no shame.

EchoNan · 31/07/2021 14:03

Ohh powerful interview Shelly Ann. Saying how she feels as a mother too.

Maggiethecat · 31/07/2021 14:17

Gutted for her but Elaine ran faster than SFP has ever ran - well deserved!

@EchoNan - Jamaica 1,2,3 🇯🇲
Was at the 200m mens 2012 when Bolt et al did the 1,2,3 and we were all dancing around with our flags afterwards singing "wan, two, tree" 😂

OP posts:
Maggiethecat · 31/07/2021 14:20

Dh telling me a bit of the back story - seems there have been "respect" issues between Elaine and SFP and tensions when SFP's former coach took on Elaine.

Oh dear....

OP posts:
EchoNan · 31/07/2021 14:40

Oh Maggie that must have been a great day!

A yes, "the history" I picked up a bit it was about the coach.

The stresses and pressures of sport behind the scenes is a nightmare still I think.

Maggiethecat · 31/07/2021 14:48

@EchoNan - on another food note - Dh got some Juici beef patties to get us in the mood before the race. Best patties I've had outside of Jamaica.

Apparently they're in Sainsburys, Asda, Morrisons. If they don't stock them in your local shop you can get them online delivered to your local.

OP posts:
EchoNan · 31/07/2021 15:31

OOh I have a Morrisons near me. I will check it out thanks Maggie
That's some recommendation!

NurseButtercup · 31/07/2021 15:53

Jamaica 1,2,3 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
What a team!! Whoo hooo
I don't even know who was in team GB
Oh well, poor dem.
Jamaica Jamaica come through breaking world records 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲

Maggiethecat · 31/07/2021 16:02

Depending on where you live it may not be in store but if not, try online.
Morrisons seem to have a 4 pack for £3.50 (can't see if they do singles).

Dh got ours from Sainsbos online - £1 each. Didn't even know they were sold here until a friend mentioned it last week. Seems they launched in 2020 but things low key because of Covid. Beef, chicken or stew peas!

OP posts:
Maggiethecat · 31/07/2021 16:08

@NurseButtercup - What a team fi true!
Shame though about the tensions. Never saw that with the men - Bolt, Blake and Powell always seemed to have a healthy rivalry.

Do feel for Dina - her preparations seem to have been going so well. Saw her interview and am cross that reporters keep their cameras in people's faces when so visibly upset.🙄

PompomDahlia · 31/07/2021 18:46

I'm late catching up on the news. Gutted for Dina - I absolutely love her. And I'm putting my Bajan heritage aside Grin and I'm delighted for the Jamaican ladies - 1,2,3 - what a result!

TeaAddict235 · 31/07/2021 20:51

Loving Elaine Thompson-Hera's hair!
Ounou see dis?

However on a serious note, as always the discussion comes up in our household, why just track events en Masse for JAM? Why not discus/shot put/javelin with similar number of entries?

Heiferr · 31/07/2021 20:53

I'm so proud of all of them but that performance by Elaine Thompson Herah was insane!

Heiferr · 31/07/2021 20:55

Interesting question. I was saying to my mum today that I feel like this year is the first year I've really noticed a JA contingent in the field events but you're right, nothing like the level we see in track. It would be interesting to look at how the ratios match up with other nationalities in track and field events.
Maggiethecat · 31/07/2021 21:26

Perhaps a mix of nature/nurture?
There may be a natural ability to run but also I don’t think field events are pushed as much as track.

Track has a huge status in Jamaica and the secondary school track competition (champs) could rival the Olympics in popularity 😂

We’ve always had track pedigree but hit the big times with Bolt, Veronica Campbell, SFP, ETH and youngsters will be even more driven now to achieve track success.

Having said that, I’ve heard it said that Bolt feels that the lack of a major Jamaican male sprinter at the moment may be due to youngsters being given big sponsorship too early and not being ‘hungry’ enough.

I love the Jamaican teams in an Olympics, so always cheer for them. Only saw a clip of the end of the women's race after already knowing it was 1, 2 and 3, however the ladies who came in positions 2 and 3 looked so pissed off. I did wonder what was going on between them all to not even hug (the COVID version).

Gwan JA 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲

Starseeking · 31/07/2021 21:33

What I've noticed about the Olympics and the competitors is that the gap between the elitist sports and grassroots sports seems to be getting wider.

So sports where you need huge investment in external equipment (horses, canoes, swimming pools etc) are dominated by Western countries, and even then you hardly see a non-white face amongst them.

Track events (where all you need is a pair of feet, determination to train and a healthy dose of talent), are dominated by those from African or Caribbean countries, and more black competitors from Western countries as well.

Imagine what could do, and where we could go with similar access to resources???

TeaAddict235 · 31/07/2021 21:51

Agree @Starseeking "Track events (where all you need is a pair of feet, determination to train and a healthy dose of talent), are dominated by those from African or Caribbean countries, and more black competitors from Western countries as well."

But field events such as high jump, or discus don't require significant financial equity. The Fiji rugby team comprised of essentially natives or economic and social black people. Furthermore Where was Jamaica/ Barbados/ the Virgin Islands in hockey? Hockey is a big sport in some of the schools in the islands. Is there really no investment in sports other than track events? Boxing as much as i hate it, darts as boring as hell, but pleases some , gymnastics, baseball, basketball, anything please, even bobsleigh, its time to diversify.
