Fantastic Hollyoaks episode about the bias black women face

I've been catching up on Hollyoaks today- it's a guilty pleasure of mine. I've just watched one of the best episodes I've ever seen. The whole episode focuses on two women going through the same thing: one is black the other white. They both have found breast lumps and they have a doctor's appointment to get it checked out. Also that day they're both being interviewed for a Business woman of the year award. Both their mornings start off hectically. They both run out of foundation so the white woman uses the free sample that came with a magazine she bought. The black woman can't use the free sample cos obviously it's for white women.

The black woman's partner tells her she doesn't need support because she's a strong independent black queen. He thinks the white woman needs supporting because 'you know, she's a bit of a princess and needs looking after'.

When they both go to the doctor's appointment they find the appointment has been double booked so only one can have the appointment. The white woman bursts into tears so they give the appointment to her. The black woman is told to have some sympathy and stop being so aggressive when she speaks up that it's unfair.

In the Businesswoman of the year Interview they both turn up late. The interviewer makes snide comments like 'are you always late?' to the black woman while brushing off the lateness with the white woman.

This is just a really quick summary, but it was an excellent episode and I'd recommend people get it on E4 catch-up and have a watch.

Here's a short clip Hollyoaks shared on their twitter account: twitter.com/Hollyoaks/status/1382399862327668738?s=19

Lovely episode. The bit with the white woman being given the appointment and walking in feeling absolutely right, no shame and entitled to it and feeling justified in the fact that she really does need this more than the Black woman resonated with me so much. I learnt very early on, at a heartbreakingly young age that I cannot compete and will always lose to white woman/girl tears. It doesn't matter if I'm right, more deserving, in more pain, the wronged party, absolutely innocent - those tears mean I have done something wrong and made her cry so I am the aggressor.

Being firm about something, insisting on the correct procedure, standing up for myself or defending myself in any way, advocating for myself or DC. I don't care anymore. I also cry. I'm done living up to the stong Black woman stereotype. It will kill me. Why do I always have to be strong? No thank you, not me ma'am.

It was wonderfully done.

Coronation street did something powerful last year with ed bailey character. He stands up to racist comments then there was reflective scenes from him and Dev as to appalling behaviour they had experienced. It will stay with me.

Just watched the coronation street one again because I'm thinking about it. I'm white. I feel as sick and disgusted today as I did when I first saw it. There's a line when Dev says people would put money on the counter rather than into his hand, I cannot get that out my head.

@HmmmmmmInteresting the episode on you tube seems to be broken into six parts. I was looking for the Dev bit but all are short and probably makes more sense to watch them all.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 21/04/2021 14:59

I will do
