Homeschooling (black) children

Call me crazy, but I have already started missing having the children at home during the day!

I do not want to homeschool long term until the the end of compulsory school age, but since lockdown I have thought more about taking a few years and moving to one or two other countries, having the children live somewhere else, experience different cultures to the UK. Probably the Caribbean and then somewhere in W Africa. The experience of homeschooling makes me think this is more possible. If anything what worries me is coming back and not finding a good school with places slot back into.

I came across this YouTube channel in which black people are talking about homeschooling. I've picked up some tips, and thought maybe you all might too!

If you want to take them abroad you need to think about whether you are going to encourage them to go to university. If so you need to look at where, entrance requirements and fees.

Yes. Thinking I'd bring them back in time for GSCE / tertiary education. I am not confident with teaching to that level. Primary school and KS3 I can do. My eldest will be 14 when my youngest is 10. I think they'd have good grounding from life elsewhere.

Hmm ...

I like the idea of homeschooling for part of a child's school career.

I completely approve of enabling a black British child to spend time in countries where they are not reminded every single day that they are a minority, and only supposed to have access to minority things, as a kindness ...

But, if I were to take children to the Caribbean or one of several African countries, then I'd want them to attend school there. Admittedly I'd probably be as picky as I have been here about choosing the right school.

Homeschooling happens when you're sailing around the world; or holed up on a deserted Greek island; or wherever.

Hi Sugar,

I've just caught on to this thread, a little late. Did you decide on homeschooling? I'm homeschooling my LO and have also been thinking about moving to Africa for a period of time for the exact same reasons.
