Can anyone recommend any great podcasts?

I have been listening to Dope Black Mums and really enjoy their content...Anything similar from Black women about issues relating to Black women in UK? Or in fact podcasts from people in the Carribean and other places across the globe?

Would you be interested in Louis Theroux interviewing Michaela Cole?

I like Therapy For Black Girls. And Michelle Obama’s podcast.

jennymac31 · 15/12/2020 01:08

'Black Women Working' is a good podcast that I've recently been listening to.

jennymac31 · 15/12/2020 01:25

'Black Ballad Presents: The Survival Guide' is another podcast worth checking out.

I second Therapy for Black Girls. Also enjoying We Run, We Eat which is 3 black London sisters talking about running and lack of diversity in exercise

Love that, I really want to start cycling. Anyone up for joining a cycling troupe with me?

Otherwise, yes, I liked Nice White Parents, if only for an insight into the workings of white privilege in school structures and governing.

samosamo · 17/12/2020 10:56

Just a thought - what would people think about a parenting podcast? There is, for example, Shades of Black(ness?). But I was thinking more along the lines of parents coming together to talk about strategies for raising black children, with an emphasis on family and personal emotional and psychological wellbeing. A bit like a therapy podcast about parenting black children, but more of a conversation than actual therapy.

I'ma clinical psychologist and have thought about doing something like this? So it wouldn't be about fashion, or finance, or medication, or education, it would be more about how to raise children with high self esteem, secure relationships in the family, dealing with the teenage years etc etc.

I'm just wondering whether it is just something I want, and not something other would care much about.

@samosamo That sounds really interesting and much needed. I don’t have kids yet but am planning to ttc when things are a little more stable. I’ve already started having conversations with my white DH about how we will parent and conversations we will need to have with our children around race. I’d think with your professional background as well it would be extremely valuable. It would also be good to create a community through it too, after hearing some bad experiences of people going to NCT type groups which didn’t cater to different cultural needs well

jennymac31 · 17/12/2020 18:03

@samosamo - if you haven't listened to 'Black Ballad Presents' then it's worth a try, as it's a parenting podcast where black mums talk about Motherhood.

jennymac31 · 17/12/2020 18:08

@PompomDahlia - the first couple of episodes of 'Black Ballad' discuss ttcing and when's the best time to have a baby.

neonjumper · 23/12/2020 00:20

Desert island discs - floElla benjamin , Ian wright

Grief cast - candice braithwaite

Adam Buxton podcast - candice carty Williams , Benjamin Zephaniah , zadie smith

Grounded with Louis Theroux - KSI , Lenny Henry

I noticed that the other day. I think one of them left. Anyone know what happened there?

sunshineandshowers40 · 23/01/2021 13:48

Thanks for the recommendations, I just listened to the first episode of black mums upfront and really enjoyed it.

lboogy · 24/01/2021 21:12

I listen to tech-ish. It's a show about pop culture and tech. Also The comb which is a bbc production featuring stories from across the African diaspora.

If you're into the less serious stuff then there's the receipts which is stopped listening to since it got sillier and sillier and the read. Stopped listening for the same reason.

Waakyeandredred · 24/01/2021 21:22

I enjoy Say Your Mind podcast by Kelechi Okafor and recently Cut The Chat

May17th · 24/03/2021 21:46

@DirtyHydrogen

Based on the "goodbye" post on their instagram page (it's still up, you've just gotta scroll to see it), I think there was a dispute around the "Dope Black" franchise... so rather than end their podcast experience entirely, 4 of them branched off and rebranded. Given that Nina (the one who left) is married to the guy who owns/runs the "Dope Black" umbrella, it makes sense that she's no longer part of it. Shame because I really liked her!

Love the podcast overall though. They've all got really different experiences and stories which means there's never a dull moment

I was looking for tips as well... But if any of you are into film /TV and specifically issues around institutional racism and class through film, check out the Mydylarama podcast. It's hosted by an African American academic who lives in the UK. She's very well informed and hilarious!
Echo Say Your Mind. Also very good
