Hi all again!

Yes, what it says in the title, I've promised my girls a trip to the hairdressers but have no idea where might be good in SW, W, NW London.

Any recommendations?!

Anyone??? (boosting for you OP). Was looking for some suggestions myself.

babynumber2pending · 12/12/2020 08:24

My friend got her hair done at Mimi et Mina in W11 and it looks lovely.

Sugarintheplum · 12/12/2020 20:44

Thank you!

I did enquire, and just for information for anyone watching this thread, the prices that I enquired about were:

(all natural afro hair)

A trim on its own is 30£.
For a wash Blowdry and cornrow its will be additional 60£.
For cornrow braids with wash and Blowdry its 80£.
For braids on its own for kids its 40£ and trim 30£.

Think £70 for a child to have their hair in simple canerow and a trim without a wash is quite expensive. But it is W11 and hopefully would be be done well. I probably wouldn't have their hair washed there, though I see it is £20 more for the wash and blow dry. But oops, £90 for a kids hair, and I have two girls! Not a criticism, it is what it is.

Charlotte Mensah's Hair Lounge in Ladbroke Grove is excellent.

maggiethecat · 17/12/2020 00:40

😳 wonder if it's too late for me to go to hairdressing school?

Sugarintheplum · 17/12/2020 10:08

I've been to Charlotte Mensah. It was ok, but I didn't;t feel it was amazing for my natural hair. Or ok, it was good, but when I left, relieved of my £240 I felt a little 'hmmmmm' about it. I wasn't excited about my hurt the tune of £240 quid, let's just say. In saying that I was ~suckered into~ gently persuaded to buy some of her hair ointments, and that must have come up to £70. I still use them. My sister uses them A Lot and says they are great, but not naturally based enough for her, so....

I really just want a reasonably priced hairdressers where I can keep up with trimming and occasional treatment for my own and my girls hair. I really can't afford, or want to spend, £500 a quarter on it. I'd prefer to invest it in the stock market in their ISAs to be honest. I'm looking to be able to wash, trim and then plait each of our hair for £60? That's £180 for three of us. I could do that twice a year. One before Christmas, once in summer! To be fair, I might not have them wash their hair as I imagine the grill will squirm, it's not very comfortable, is it? But even that doesn't come into my affordability zone!

@maggiethecat definitely not too late and I might join you there.

You are quite right OP not to overpay and sensibly put money away for DC. I'm not much help as have just moved back to London and still looking for my own. Have been doing my own hair until now but it's really time I found a professional again.

Starseeking · 17/12/2020 15:23

Adornment365 is probably only slightly cheaper than Charlotte Mensah, but you'd have to travel further afield as it's on Acre Lane in Brixton.

I've also been to Hype Coiffure on Lavender Hill in Clapham, though not for a few years, and prices then were on a par with Adornment365.

I found this article which may help, though I've not had experience of any of the other places to be able to comment.

If you're able to get to Brixton, Carl Campbell is amazing, but takes ages to get an appointment. Maison Style is also good as well and maybe a little cheaper. Sandra Webb is/was another good salon...apparently the salon has closed down but she is still working but somewhere else (according to her insta).

(Anyone looking for a stylist in east London then Naturally Immaculate home salon is your go too! She cuts my pixit exactly how I request, every time!)

Sugarintheplum · 17/12/2020 22:45

Those S London spots seem good, actually. I can handle the half hour drive!

Thank you!

So crazy there appears to be so few!

Elite hair lounge in Streatham, Lewisham and North London. For braids try bombastic braids in Tottenham. I totally understand regarding the costs, but I often find you get what you pay for. Peckham is good for cheaper braiding salons

1992serpent · 21/12/2020 09:21

I wouldn't recommend Sandra Webb, had a bad experience with them after my second visit.

DeLady Salon in Waterloo is my go to and I've been using her for 4 years. She's amazingly friendly, does a fantastic job and is reasonably priced.

Denzelstowel · 22/12/2020 09:56

Probably too late but just came across your post -my nieces go to the one I've attached in the pic. apparently there can be a ...wait. I also would like to go to Charlotte Mensah but she charges £100 plus to set my natural hair on rollers Confused. I don't mind a little extra but couldn't afford to justify double what I usually pay.

If you want to have the hairdresser come to you I cannot recommend Florence from naturally immaculate enough. She has been doing my hair for a decade and her price are really fair + she comes at home! Otherwise she also works at Andre Marie salon :)

babynumber2pending · 25/12/2020 21:11

Snap! @olynessa
Florence has left Andre Marie salon as of this month she said. So she will be mobile full time now. Love how she cuts hair!

Hated Elite hair, they did an awful job, cut all my growth and had crap customer service. I really struggle with bad customer service in London black salons (black businesses in general of I'm being honest). I try and use my old salon in the Midlands while I'm visiting my mum. Fraction of the prices down here, nice friendly service and no hard upselling!
PompomDahlia · 28/05/2021 16:59

Hope it's ok to bump this thread as I'm also looking for a new salon. I'd been going to a local place mentioned upthread and had one too many bad experiences.

Does anyone here get their hair coloured? I fancy some highlights/balyage but don't know where to start on mixed/afro hair
