"Ran her fingers through her hair"

Hello again! I have a question: it's about a mixed-race girl with short-ish, frizzy hair that tangles easily. I'm like that, but my hair is fairly "soft" and I often "run my fingers" through it without a problem, though I might find a tangle or two. It's like combing it with my fingers.

This girl's hair is harder to "run her fingers through", as a white person would do, say. Can you suggest an alternative thing she'd do?

Context? Am assuming it's for a book/creative writing?

if it's for a writing exercise I'm thinking something like "fingered her curls" although that might more suit a trashy novel

Running fingers through my hair is a world of pain, as I have a lot of hair. For an absent minded gesture, if that's what you're after, I find that I twist my hair between or around my fingers. Or I might find a ringlet and twang it. If I mean business I simply grab it all with both hands, wrap it in a scrunch, then swear because half of it pinged out again.

These are all good options, and maggiethecat, I think "fingered" is in the right direction but a little too suggestive!
