I'm not surprised tbh.

OP posts:
PatricksRum · 16/10/2020 01:38

Given the responses on here, I am really not surprised.

Why is it that when we stand up and peacefully request equality white people become so scared and attack, attack, attack?

sophimgled · 16/10/2020 01:58

No one understands anything. So go to response for kost people is kick off and be nasty pathetic idiots. All humans are equal in how crap we are in my opinion.

Leannethom85 · 16/10/2020 02:04

There isn't a rise, it has always been there, social media has now attracted people's attention to it.

Not a dig at the PP but when you say hate crime, have you ever been the victim of such? rather than get at one race and plonking them in one bucket and say all they do is attack..

I'm white I've been hated on for my perceived religion growing up in Glasgow .. There is still sectarian hatrid there as well as in northern Ireland not as bad as it was before but it rumbles on.. To be honest that should be tackled first before anything else. Anywhere in the UK fair enough tackle hate crime, they don't have the Catholic/ protestant divide the way Central Glasgow and Northern Ireland doea and I bet both sides have at least been a victim of hate crime at least once in their lives.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 16/10/2020 05:42

I think if someone has to ask if you are Protestant or Catholic, or I have to find out what the descriptor you have for me to be prejudiced against you it is a completely different kettle of fish from racism.

I cannot hide my skin colour. It is the first thing everyone sees. It is an immediate trigger and reason to discriminate against me. There is no conversation that sees past my skin colour or situations I can skate by in.

A White Catholic is just a white person walking down the street and will benefit from their privilege . They are only disadvantaged if that in certain situations. My skin colour is a constant so there is constant discrimination.

I really dont think this is the place to come and gaslight black people about how sectarianism is worse than racism in the black forum.

PatricksRum · 16/10/2020 10:57

Hmm

Oh yeah, let's put our fingers in our ears and deny a black person's experience.

White people plonked us in one bucket. White people attack or defend, your post is a great example.

PatricksRum · 16/10/2020 10:58

I'm white I've been hated on for my perceived religion growing up in Glasgow ..

Can I ask which features you have that one is able to determine your religion from appearance only?

RedMarauder · 16/10/2020 14:37

@Leannethom85 you seem not to understand this -

I cannot hide my skin colour. It is the first thing everyone sees. It is an immediate trigger and reason to discriminate against me. There is no conversation that sees past my skin colour or situations I can skate by in.

Believe it or not there are black and brown people who are Catholic or Protestant.

Ablackrussian · 16/10/2020 20:29

Why should it be tackled first?!

midgebabe · 16/10/2020 20:40

I disagree with Leannethom , i suspect there has been a real rise
We have a government who thrives on discord and othering, an environment where racism is considered normal and patriotic by some

RedMarauder · 18/10/2020 00:54

@Leannethom85 probably isn't coming back.

I've found on MN that posters who are asked to justify themselves either don't come back or go into full victim mode when other posters point out their post isn't logical particularly on racial matters.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 18/10/2020 06:43

I dont understand why you would come here to specifically tell black women that sectarianism is worse than racism and should be dealt with when you yourself aren't at any risk of racism and black Catholics and Protestants also exist.

It's like the attachment of poor white working class boys to any conversation when race is brought up. So black people can't be working class either and don't also suffer from the same issues as well in addition to race?

I expect it on the main board but not here. You have to be deeply racist to purposely come here to gaslight black people.

OlympicProcrastinator · 18/10/2020 07:49

One of the reasons I’ve been reluctant to join you all on this section is the amount of white voices that took over (both for and against) us having our own section.

I ventured on today and just a few posts in, a white person comes in a space specifically for black MN’s to tell us all we are wrong. I’m SO TIRED of this.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 18/10/2020 15:17

It's exhausting.

chickenyhead · 18/10/2020 15:23

I'm white and I totally agree with you.

I think that when the white privileged leaders of the world are allowed to spout racist hate speech, or ignorance unchecked, others feel free to do the same.

It should start at the top. People should be held publicly accountable for racism at every level. Including myself. It's the only way to educate and tackle inequality.

chickenyhead · 18/10/2020 15:27

Sorry for coming to the space specifically designated for black people BTW, you have the right to that. I just come here for the bigger picture sometimes.

Ablackrussian · 18/10/2020 19:44

chickenyhead don't apologise. You've done nothing wrong.

Quaagars · 18/10/2020 20:46

@Leannethom85

I'm white I've been hated on for my perceived religion growing up in Glasgow ..

How would anyone know your religion if you were just walking along the street going about your business though?
Me or you, if we were out walking wouldn't automatically be judged/discriminated against/automatically distrusted etc, we'd have the "benefit" of being white in that respect (for want of a better word), however horrible a thought that is.
So it's not really the same as racism that people on this board are describing and live through every day

bangarrrr · 20/10/2020 02:26

I don't think white religions can compare to the Muslim hatred, that people are horrible because of the way they look. In my area that's a lot worse than any black racism. I think there should be a none judge mental area for black people to answer any questions from none black people. I think most people would benefit from learning rather than being afraid that everything is racist and be segregated xx

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 20/10/2020 04:44

You realise people can be black and Muslim? As many of my friends and family are and still suffer from discrimination from both.

I think there should be a none judge mental area for black people to answer any questions from none black people

Why? Do you ask this from women to answer to men? Why is this my responsibility to teach you how not to be racist?

This is a safe space for black voices not to constantly have to defend racist and small minded views and when people purposely come to disagree and gas light black people. You have the whole of the main board to do that? Why come here and stir shit up?

C130 · 20/10/2020 10:19

There are plenty of books that you can buy written by black people, that can help people to understand what it can be like living life as a black person, if you are interested.
Ablackrussian · 20/10/2020 10:35

Hi, OP.

I've just had a look at the link

Hate crime in England and Wales hits new record as racially motivated offences rocket by 4,000

Wow. I knew things were bad but Shock

It's extremely depressing.

Quaagars · 21/10/2020 13:39

I think there should be a none judge mental area for black people to answer any questions from none black people

Why should they have to?
I mean, can you imagine how infuriating and time consuming that would be? Especially with the amount of people who, despite being "explained " to, would still be adamant that they weren't being racist, what are you talking about? and continue to bang on?
Surely it's up to us to want to learn ourselves, not be spoonfed.

PlanDeRaccordement · 21/10/2020 13:48

Hmm well I read the article and it said that

  • thate crime has gone up by 8% compared to last year.
  • the increase was due to racially and religiously motivated hate crimes. And
  • there was no breakdown of the race of the perpetrators or victims

So really, the increase cannot be solely due to more white people attacking black people. They really should record the data of who is attacking whom and whether it is racial or religious.

PlanDeRaccordement · 21/10/2020 13:55

More from the article:
-racially motivated, rose by 6 per cent to more than 76,000.
-sexual orientation increased by by 19 per cent to 15,800,
-transgender identity by 16 per cent to 2,500.
-disability hate crime rose by 9 per cent to 8,500
-religious hate crime fell by 5 per cent to 6,800.

“Around half of hate crimes were public order offences, such as stirring up racial hatred, threatening violence and causing harassment. More than a third were violence against the person offences and 5 per cent were criminal damage and arson.”

Disturbing news.

hazeldice · 22/10/2020 01:22

@C130 whats a good book?

I am white and have absolutely no idea what other people are going through, don't know any black people to talk to to get any insight and seems people get blasted when they ask questions or have genuine questions to try and progress.
