Hi,

I am mixed race with very long curly hair (Just above my bum) - not Afro. However, my hairdresser, I feel, is struggling to cut it how I need it to be. I wear it straight and curly, but I need the weight taking out of it so I still get the body of my curls, but when I’ve asked for loads of layers, (and shorter ones. My shortest layer is shoulder length) she said she can’t do that as it’ll look weird due to the length. So basically when my hair is curly it is flat from the root and becomes wider at the bottom.

I have now found a place that specialises in black hair (I’m in Manchester), but want to know if there’s anything in particular I should be asking for or how best to describe what I need? I expect they will have more experience with curly hair than my current hairdresser, but just really want to make sure I get the right cut.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I would spend some time reading black hair magazines. It would give you an idea of whether the look you want is achievable with your hair and also might provide a reference picture for the hairdresser.

It would also be good to find a natural hair specialist who will have lots of experience managing natural curls.

I would google a few youtube videos. Watch and get a few ideas. Then call up the hairdresser and ask a few questions over the phone and how they are going to cut it. If it does not match your expectation. Do not go.

in regards to the hair being bulky at the bottom, have you thought about creams/shampoo that help the hair curl up all the way through? (if you haven't already.) this might be your answer.

There is a mixed race model/ blogger on Instagram called Samio Renelda She has beautiful curly hair and has her hair cut by Vicky at Mccrory hairdressers in Manchester.

Samio also has a YouTube channel with some hair styling videos

Thank you for this - very helpful. No idea why I never thought of these ideas and I’ll look into the hairdresser too :)

You may need to find a hairdresser who does a curly cut (curl by curl) there are definitely some in Manchester...

I agree with the curl by curl cut.... makes a difference!
