Calling the West Indies

Hi All,

My Dad lives in Barbados and calling him from my mobile (I don't have a landline) is costing me a fortune!
He is old school and doesn't have a smartphone so there is no chance of making videocalls.
Does anyone use an international phone card or similar to make calls to their family?
Thanks in advance 😁

My parents used to buy them years ago. £10 calling cards. So me and my siblings could call our grandparents in Jamaica.

I use Localphone. Need to set up an account and then can use mobile or landline to call. It is so much cheaper than just making the call from your mobile!

DPs parents use something called Magic Jack, they use it for Trinidad mostly, I think its Internet rather than phone line based, its a phone handset thing though.

I use Tesco international calling card. They have an app as well, I find it cheaper than the others I have used before.

Lebara is pretty good and calls to Barbados from 12p/minute depending on mobile or call to landline. you can buy £5 credit upwards

I have an internet-only Vodafone account, which comes with a router. I did not order a landline. However, I soon discovered Vodafone Broadband Voice, which means you plug your landline phone directly into your router, and voila! You can make international calls for free, through the Internet. Here is a link: I realise this is only of use if you have Vodafone, but who knows, maybe it works with other providers too.

Oh dear. I just realised that most of you would be calling from the UK. I am in Ireland. So I guess it's not helpful, unless you have a similar set up in the UK. Maybe it would work anyway, but phone companies just aren't telling us. Worth a try...
