pixiestix · 17/07/2010 17:59

Bunny - don't joke about the shoes and socks - DH has had to do mine a few times! Now I just have to convince him to shave my legs for me!
Great tips from your friend. I am a bit frightened by the number of maternity pads that are being recommended

Ozzie - getting an acupuncturist sounds like a really good idea. Anything that gives you a bit more control has got to be great. Am LMAO at "very woo" though!
As for induction, my friend had to be induced with her little boy as her waters broke but she had no contractions. She ended up having a seven hour labour with just gas and air and was really pleased with the whole experience - so induction doesn't have to be awful or out of control (although often people on other threads seem to be really against it)

Aly - eek at no orgasms!! The things we do for our children, hey? Hopefully your placenta will shift pronto, as lots of them do when the uterus starts to stretch. Great to know that Arpie is fit and well though.

Spirael - yikes at these all day feeding sessions! I think I am either going to have to get myself some really good books or invest in a telly! Do you have a manual or electric breast pump? The electric ones sound a bit scary! DH went a funny colour of green when I showed him one on the internet!

Hermya - did you have any luck at the doctors?

November - "healthy growing baby* - thats a positive way of looking at it, isnt it? I wonder how many of our giant babies will actually end up being big, given how wrong midwifes often are when it comes to this sort of thing? Poor you with a UTI - as if we aren't all going to the toilet enough at this stage!
Glad that your placenta has shifted - now you need to pass on all those moving vibes we gave you to Aly!

Well, my GD test is done and I will get the results early next week. I felt completely sick for the whole of yesterday as I couldn't eat anything until the test was finished at about 1pm. Ended up sleeping all afternoon, and feeling queasy all night, so I am not a very good patient!
The baby is still measuring two weeks ahead which is good as the midwife said that any more than that and I would need to have a growth scan. Two weeks extra is acceptable apparently! I'm just hoping that means the baby will come two weeks early, rather than it will cook for 40 weeks and come out at 12lbs!
I mentioned my panic attacks to the midwife and she was completely dismissive of them I guess thats a good thing - ie she has seen it all before and doesn't think I'm a raving loony? But a little bit of support would have been nice. Nevermind.
I am 30+1 today - ooer, it all seems a bit real now!

WorrisomeHeart · 17/07/2010 19:21

Hi all

Had an absolutely fab in Richmond Park today but think I may have got slightly singed - poor Mr Teeny will come out with a suntan! We went with some friends of ours who have a three year old - it was hilarious, DH got me a strawberry icecream and I think the little boy thought it was his - cue major waterworks when it was given to me, which were not appeased by being offered the vanilla or chocolate cones that had been bought for him and his brother! In a fight for icecream between a hot pregnant lady and a three year old, I think I'd still bet on the pregnant lady!! All was calmed when he was got his own strawberry cone, which then proceeded to drip faster then he could eat it! Bless him, he was very cute.

november and aly - fab news on the good scan results, am very pleased for you both and am chiming in on the 'keep those placentas moving' thoughts!

spireal am loving your updates and great to hear that the feeding is going so well. Am I right in thinking that you don't need to wipe the Lansinoh off before Mindy feeds? I already have some Kamilosan as I got it earlier in the year when I had some dry skin problems, but I think you can only use it after b/feeding.

pixie (and others) is the GD test a standard thing? Just wondering if it's something that is coming up for me - its not been mentioned at any point by the m/wives yet.

hermya I like the idea of a postnatal Frolickers thread - it would be a shame to lose contact with you all!

ozzie great that you are able to have input into making the kind of birth you want - what kind of oils did you buy? I think I've read somewhere that clary sage is good for labour, but may have that completely wrong..

bunny I had a look at those seed pod baskets following your post - very very cute!

superpenguin and muser hope your M/S is ok today!

Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend!

pixiestix · 17/07/2010 19:41

Worrisome I think you only get a GD test in the UK if you meet their "high risk" criteria which are: being overweight, being of South Asian, black Caribbean or Middle Eastern origin, having PCOS, being at risk of having a large baby (more than 12lb).
I am quite a bit fat and the baby is measuring big for dates which is why they tested me. I don't know if Mr Teeny measuring big is enough on its own to make them want to test you, but if they do, they will do it between 28-30 weeks, so pretty soon.
How are your BH? Are you still in pain or has it eased off?

WorrisomeHeart · 17/07/2010 19:44

Ok, thanks pixie I'll wait and see if anything is said on Monday at my next m/w appt. BH's have calmed right down thank goodness - had a really rough night on Wed with aching muscles all down the sides of my bump but I think that was just from the constant cramping all day. I've also found that rubbing cream on it helps - smething I should have been doing much more regularly!

BTW, I completley forgot, I THINK we have a name so have updated the list with the probable choice (unless he doesn't match it when he comes out..)

ozzie the acupuncture sounds like a great idea. Anything that might help speed things along for you has to be worth a try

aly congrats on the scan. Hope your placenta moves out of the way, although I like the sound of no heavy lifting The sex ban could get a bit annoying though

muser and pengiun sorry to hear you're both feeling sick. I'll second what spirael said, just make sure you keep eating. I developed a habit of finding things that I could actually enjoy eating and living solely off them for a week or two, at which point I'd suddenly stop liking them. Now our pantry is full of the half eaten boxes of all the random food I stockpiled

I also found the slow cooker really helpful. I had about an hour in the mornings before the nausea kicked in, so I'd load whatever we were having for dinner that night into the slow cooker while I felt well enough to face preparing food.

spirael sounds like you and Mindy are still doing well. Hope she's gained plenty of weight for the mw

pixie I'm hoping that by the time I can't reach my own feet the weather will be warm enough for me to just be in my flip flops the whole time so I won't need to worry about socks. Hadn't considered the leg shaving issues though.....

november glad to hear your placenta has moved

worrisome I agree that noone comes between a pg lady and food I love your name choice.

I went to watch my netball team play yesterday - it was lovely sitting outside in the sunshone. I did miss playing though, especially as they were one player short. Another girl on the team has just announced that she's pg, luckily she should be able to play until the end of the season. I think the rest of the team are a bit worried that it's catching though!

Hermya321 · 18/07/2010 20:10

Muser, Penguin Sorry to hear you're not feeling very well. I hope you feel better soon. If you feel concerned about your lack of food (I did), I drank lots of milk and fruit juice to try and keep my calorie intake up when I didn't feel like eating food.

Also Penguin try taking yourself round the supermarket and see what jumps out at you, thats what I did when I got desperate. I think I lived on cereal and soup for one week.

November Glad your placenta has moved.

Ozzie Have you thought about the old raspberry leaf tea? Otherwise, plan to go somewhere really important, that may help to get things going.

Aly Oh my word, I'm sorry to hear about your placenta.

Pixie How did your test go in the end? (Did I miss that one???)

Bunny I can't lean back as much nowadays, which is probably great for my posture but annoying when I wish to lounge around. Oh well, optimal fetal positioning will be mine after all this leaning forwards stuff.

As for me, I'm off to the Docs tomorrow to see what they can do with me in relation to work. I'll let you know how it goes, but I'm just so so tired all the time and I walk round the offices like some kind of old woman.

My LO also likes the sound of his Daddies voice, DH tried talking to the bump last night and he went crazy! It was so cool, DH tried it again earlier and the same again. I'm wondering when I'll start to feel him hiccup next. I can't wait for that one.

I don't know if you remember, but the bump poker from work has re-emerged. I think he's oddly fascinated by the whole pregnancy thing.

OP posts:
addie81 · 18/07/2010 21:05

Went for a private growth scan yesterday. Our little girl is on course to be huge - measuring at 30+2 when she should be 28+2! My husband and I are both tall (5'11 and 6'4) so I suppose we were always going to have a big baby. Everything looks fine though - there is plenty of fluid around the baby and she looks fine. I feel like time has started to really drag now - I just want her to hurry up and arrive.
Hope all is going ok for Fudge and Splode.
Those with MS have my sympathy - its hellish but it does pass eventually. Mine lasted till 28 weeks but most of the ladies on this thread were better much quicker than that so hopefully you will be too.

bunnygirl80 · 18/07/2010 23:24

hermya lol at "the bump poker has re-emerged"....sounds like you had locked him in a cupboard and he's finally managed to escape

I had my first bump grabbing experience at the weekend when a couple of the girls at netball ran over and patted it. I was surprisingly unbothered by it - perhaps because I know them quite well and I still had a flat-ish tummy last time they saw me. Still not sure how I'll react if someone I don't know/don't like tries it.

addie 28 weeks of ms I moaned enough about mine, and it was pretty much completely gone by 13 weeks.

Could you be having a long baby (given your and DH's heights) but with an average head circumference to aid an easy exit?!

I bought my pram yesterday - managed to get a really good deal on an almost new one on ebay I think the car seat is now the only expensive item we've got left to buy. Actually having baby things sitting in the house makes everything seem so real.

MIL is not happy that we'll be keeping the pram in the house until LO arrives as apparantly it's bad luck to bring the pram in before baby comes home

Ozziegirly · 19/07/2010 01:00

Morning/Evening everyone,

Lovely to catch up on everyone's news and I hope you all had a nice weekend.

NovemberAli that's great news that the placenta has moved - sorry to hear about the UTI though.

Spirael it sounds like everything is going really well for you. I have also bought some Lanisoh (or however you spell it!) so I am also prepared.

pixie it's always good to hear positive induction stories - you tend to only hear the bad ones! Good luck with the results of your GD test too.

Worrisome I have bought grapefruit oil as it said it encouraged "joy and positivity" which I thought might be in short supply in labour. I also bought orange oil and cinnamon because I really like the smell of them together - kind of Christmassy and I find it a soothing and relaxing smell. I smelt clary sage as that was recommended but I didn't really like the smell of it. My main reasons for buying them really are to drown out any underlying "hospital" smells and also just to encourage/sooth/relax me.

Sounds like you had a lovely time in Richmond, I really like it over there.

Hermya I will also be drinking raspberry leaf tea from about 38 weeks I think! Good thinking re booking something important - maybe I'll book in a haircut!

Your Dh sounds really nice, mine also talks to the bump and was thrilled on Saturday when he put his hand there and said "hello" and the baby kicked exactly where his hand was. He was like this for ages.

Addie great news on the scan.

bunny I also have a friend who has refused to have any baby stuff at all in the house! It's all at her mum's house and she'll drop it round once she has the baby. To be fair, she's had numerous miscarriages, IVF and now a really awful pregnancy so I can kind of understand why she doesn't want to tempt fate. All our stuff is in the baby's room though - we haven't got anywhere else for it.

All's well with me. My wrists have been so painful in the night, waking me up, and they feel so sore, and my fingers feel swollen and pins and needley. They're ok in the day though. I'll be glad when this symptom passes though!
I'm quite swollen now in general - my ankles feel like cankles and my feet swell by the end of the day. Ah well, it's to be expected and isn't the worst thing I could go through.

Hermya321 · 19/07/2010 15:58

I've been to the Docs, I ended up seeing one of the Nurses and spoke to him who is now going to speak to the Doctor. I got a bit annoyed, he kept going on about starting my maternity leave early. My ML package is alright, but when SMP comes it means a big wage drop for us and I'd prefer to leave that one for after the babies born. Plus what would I do for the next 14 weeks. I actually like being at work, it means I have something to do and won't be crawling the walls at home.

OP posts:
superpenguin · 19/07/2010 16:36

Hello everyone, how're y'all doing? Hope you all had good weekends.

Muser what are we going to do eh? Reassuring I'm not the only one but isn't this rubbish!

Thanks to everyone for their anti-sickness tips! I will try anything.

Spent a lovely weekend in bed doing NOTHING AT ALL feeling ill and sorry for myself and being waited on by DH! He has been very good, taken over all the cooking and housework (not that either of us ever really do any) and making frequent trips to supermarket to buy whatever it is I think I might be able to eat this time.
He even made me a packed lunch for work today not that I could eat hardly any of it.

So much for gaining too much weight too early, I have LOST nearly half a stone this week, which although I am a bit overweight and needed to, can't be ideal.

Fascinated reading everyone's updates, keep them coming.

luckyseven · 19/07/2010 19:20

Superpenguin are you feeling sick or being sick? Glad you have dh looking after you and I loved your honesty about the housework, we were exactly the same but I was shocked at how far we let it go when I was going through the early pg crippling tiredness. I wouldn?t worry too much about losing a bit of weight when you are feeling this rough, ice lollies made me feel less queasy, might be worth a try?

muser, superpenguin and aly i hope we get some more frolicker graduates through soon to boost our numbers after the August, September, October baby boom!

addie 28 weeks of ms! Wow so glad that is over for you, my friend had to get signed off work for chronic ms and kept getting told not to worry it is the sign of a healthy baby. I hope bunnygirl?s logic is right and she is a healthy length rather than weight alone!

novemberali glad your scan shows the placenta has moved, that must be a relief but ouch about the uti, I had one a few weeks ago and discovered a whole new world of pain until the antibiotic kicked in, hope it clears quickly for you.

ozzie all your alternative options sound great, can you let me know what the theory is behind raspberry leaf tea and when should it be taken? I am keen to naturally encourage the baby to come on time or a wee bit early to avoid being induced before Christmas. Pregnancy is also making me sample the ?woo? side of life as I have signed up to start pg yoga in a couple of weeks. I did pilates once and got bored as I was a spin class addict so not sure how I will take to the yoga!

spirael thanks for all the tips and for hanging around, you are such a natural.

pixie did they tell you if the baby measuring two weeks ahead will make you more likely to go early or have a potentially bigger baby?

worrisome was your mw appt today? How did it go? Well done on (nearly definitely) deciding on your boy?s name. Was it easier to think of a name once you knew the sex? I could name a girl 100 times over but struggle to find options for a boy. My hospital won?t reveal the sex anymore because they got sued!

bunny you are so organised getting your pram and all the other bits and pieces. What pram did you go for in the end? Do you think you will play netball again after the little one arrives and you have settled into parenthood?

fudge i hope splodge is continuing to gain the ozs, thinking of you.

hermya sorry you didn?t get the clarity you wanted at the gps today. Maybe if oneof8 is lurking she could give you advice on when the last time before your edd that you can put in a sick line without being forced onto maternity pay? Oh and if you could copy the sensible list of required baby kit that would be great. I joined which? for a month for a £1 today to give me even more info to feed the car seat / buggy obsession research

I hope I have managed to cover everyone. I am looking forward to / panicking a bit about my 20 week scan next Wed and at last I am feeling like a normal person again with lots of energy so have started going swimming in my attractive special swimsuit that I made dh buy me and went for a monster cycle ride yesterday although I don?t think I will be cycling for much longer. Hurray for topshop too for making nice maternity work trousers and then putting them in the sale, tomorrow is my first day in proper maternity clothes!

pixiestix · 19/07/2010 19:31

Hey,
Well as predicted I failed the GD test My bloods were ok before the Lucozade but 8.3 afterwards, when they shouldn't go over 7.8,
I can't get an appointment with the diabetes midwife until next Monday so am scouring the internet to find out what I should be doing, which of course is scaring the life out of me. Not at all what I need given how much I have been panicking over the last few weeks.
Am totally blaming myself as I was overweight at the start of this pregnancy, and haven't been eating well.
Aly, Ozzie - anything you guys have to say would be much appreciated. I am feeling pretty down.
Sorry for the me, me, me post. Going to go and crawl under the duvet now.

addie81 · 19/07/2010 20:01

sorry - just noticed typo in my last post. I am now 28 weeks the MS went at 20 weeks, not 28 weeks. I don't want to make any of the frolickers who are at an earlier stage think it is going to last until 28 weeks!

fudgecat · 19/07/2010 20:20

hi all

Just a quickie from me - will try and do a proper post tomorrow

Scan today went quite well - Splodge has put on about 80 grams this week and the doctor said the blood flow through the cord was looking ok.

Fluid level is very low again but that didnt come as a shock as I had been leaking fluid for most of the weekend. Just got to hope that the fluid that does build up is doing its jobs on the lungs.

X

pixiestix · 19/07/2010 20:43

Fudge that is great news! Two more weeks like that and Splodge will be viable! x

chancewouldbeafinething · 19/07/2010 20:50

fudge great news, splodge is a little fighter!! hope that you are feeling ok.

Sorry just a quick post - far too tired after a long weekend away seeing the in-laws, and a long day at work. Feeling good though to be past the 28 week mark now and into the third trimester. Off to a Hypno birthing class tomorrow night and have the midwife in the afternoon...day off to rest on Wednesday, promise to catch up then....hope all doing well xx

aly323 · 19/07/2010 21:13

Fudge excellent news regarding Splodge's weight gain! I think you've got a pretty amazing little baby in there.

SuperP, I'm still having occasional (almost daily) bouts of ms, but it's actually bearable now. I was a mess from weeks 6-10 and it has steadily improved since then. I'm still beat and our house is a mess, but I can at least function somewhat normally. I have no real advice regarding the sickness since I was limited on my diet as well. I know that they say it is common to lose weight in the first tri due to sickness. Just a head's up, I was very sick for weeks and then had about three days/nights of really bad vertigo and dizziness right before my ms started to improve. My dr gave me something similar to benedryl when that happened.

Lucky, I was just thinking the same thing about needing more grads. I would love to see a few more due dates after mine! I have a feeling they're all working hard on the frolickers thread to help us out!!

Pixie, don't worry too much about the GD. If you look around too much, you'll find plenty to freak you out, but generally, women who catch it and just try to make a few changes end up with nice healthy babies. I'm sure the first thing they'll do is work with your diet. It isn't fun, but it will make a difference. You may be able to fix it with just a few little tweaks.

OneOf8 · 19/07/2010 21:26

Fudge Fantastic news!! so please!!

Hermya, Maternity automatically kicks in if you are absent from work with a "pregnancy related illness" from 4 weeks prior to the EDD.

I am not sure how your company are (or if) recording the absences to date - but if you are asked to complete any absence forms or records of absences or to sign and confirm an absence, make sure you record the "real" reason - ie if it is pregnancy related these are supposed to be recorded seperately and can not be used in any form of disciplinary action - so that is one less thing to worry about...

My understanding of non-pregnancy related illnesses is these are treated the same as if you were not pregnant and you will be entitled to the normal process - either company pay or SSP. Company sick pay or SSP will be payable until the date you were either due to go on Mat leave or the date baby is born - which ever is sooner. At this time Maternity leave starts.

Not sure how much help this information is - but hopefully will allow you to make a decision that will be best for you and baby xx

Hello to everyone else - I do lurk most evenings and catch up with everyones news, just been feeling a bit crappy with tiredness and feeling sicky. I can cope with the being sick, but its the having to function whilst feeling sick that is doing me in!

Stuffing myself like i am training for a career in Taxidermy - but the relief is lasting for a shorter time each time... cut down on swimming as to tired - so look like a fat arse - wasn't going to be mistaken for an athlete before - but now may have to change my name to Nelly!!

Still, all for a good cause!!

Muser and Super - lets keep our fingers crossed it starts to ease soon!

Hermya321 · 19/07/2010 21:36

Fudge That is fantastic news, I'm still praying for that LO of yours. I hope that you're well though.

OP posts:
luckyseven · 19/07/2010 22:10

yikes hermya quite a list but very very useful! Thank you.

Hermya321 · 19/07/2010 22:37

Oneofeight Thanks for that, I went to the Doctors as I'm attempting to try and get work to reduce my shifts. They've done it with a few others who have been sick with various pregnancy and non pregnancy related issues. At the moment I work eight to ten hour stints and have an hours drive each way, the thing is this is making my SPD worse. I don't really want to go off sick, but I don't feel I can carry on as I am doing as the rate I'm going I'll end up on crutches knowing my luck. I wanted to see if reducing my hours would help calm things down. Plus from what I've seen work actually like to keep you at work (obviously).

Lucky Sorry it is a rather scary sight to see it all written down but it helped me to budget for stuff.

fudge that's fantastic news about splodge - you certainly have a little fighter on your hands

ozzie I can see why your friend would feel that way. I didn't buy anything baby related until after the 19 week scan was ok, but we don't have anywhere else to store the things once we've bought them. We could keep the prma in the garage, but after my friend told me she found a nest of redbacks in the hood of her buggy that she keeps outside, I think I'll be storing it in the house

hermya sorry the doctors weren't more helpful. I would think that work would rather reduce your hours than have you not there at all, but then as I found out sometimes employers are completely crazy

lucky I'm not so much organised as just trying to spread the cost of everything - I'm trying to buy a few things each month rather than doing it all at once. I'd love to go back to netball next season - the only problem is that DH's rugby games are at the same time and one of us will have to look after LO. I think we might both play on alternate weeks, DH is quite keen to bring the baby to netball after I told him about other dads that do who get lots of attention from all of the women

Good luck for your 20 week scan - I was really nervous before mine. And yay for having lots of energy, I feel the same at the moment but I can't help wondering how much longer it's going to last.

pixie sorry you failed the GD test. Hope you get some good advice on managing it from the midwife

super I think it's a pretty normal thing to lose weight in the first trimester. It's lovely that your DH is looking after you so well. Don't worry about the housework, my house looked like a tip for the first 13 weeks of my pg.

I had thought that for the last couple of days my boobs had started resting on my bump when I slouch. Pulled my top up yesterday, and it is in fact a roll of fat that has appeared It looks like the bit of fat that was on my belly has been displaced upwards as my tummy has stretched....I wonder how much higher up it will get

Started listening to my hypnobirthing cd over the weekend. The only problem with it is I find the man's voice really annoying, and at times it sound a bit like he was eating something when he recorded it It is very relaxing though and great for practising my breathing.

fudge great news that little Splodge is still fighting away. Yay for Splodge!

pixie sorry to hear that you have the GD diagnosis. 8.3 isn't too bad though, mine was 11.1 when I did the GTT, and I think this freaked out my Obs as I don't have any of the risk factors at all!

Ah well.

Your dietician will go through what you should and shouldn't be eating. I'm not going to lie, it takes organisation and you will sometimes feel like crying in the supermarket when you just want a sodding bite of cake, but this passes.

The things I have found hardest are finding quick suppers as mine all tended to be very carb heavy (jacket potato, pasta, beans on toast), and also making sure I have food and snacks with me when I'm out as trying to buy even a sandwich is a pain.

What you can eat will depend on a number of factors, including your current weight, stage in pregnancy, how the baby is doing etc. But I would say the "rules" as I have found them are as follows;

  1. No "obvious" sugary things, like cake, chocolate, sweets, biscuits.
  1. Look on the labels of food - you should be looking at anything below 5% sugar. You'll be amazed that some things are SO much higher, especially cereal and yogurt, but also ready made sauces.
  1. Have some carb with each meal, but a smaller portion. Your dietician will run through portion sizes.
  1. Your portion size will shrink, and therefore you should eat 5-6 times a day to make sure you're not going hungry.
  1. You haven't failed if you end up on insulin. You haven't caused this, it's just the hormones created by your placenta. If you do end up on insulin, you will use this as an excuse to eat some chips and crisps, if you're human .

A lot of it is trial and error. I have had randomly high readings from innocuous things like a chicken salad wrap, omelette with small jacket potato and yet we had a chinese takeaway on Friday and I had a lovely low reading afterwards. I even managed a three course meal in a nice restaurant, again, with one of my lowest readings!

I am by no means expert on this, but after following the diet strictly for 5 weeks now I have picked up some tips (mainly from aly and the others on the "Support and Help with Gestational Diabetes" thread).

At first I never thought I would get used to it, and felt like my pregnancy had been "ruined" when it was all so simple and straightforward before, but now I jab away without a second thought!

luckyseven I'm actually not sure about the rasp leaf tea, I need to look into it. I think you start on it from about 37 weeks and have to drink quite a lot. It's probably an old wives' tale anyway.

I know what you mean about the "woo". I did pregnancy pilates when I was more of a "pounding on the treadmill" person before, but I found I actually quite liked the various stretchy moves.

Hermya sorry that you're feeling so rubbish, fingers crossed your work can sort out reduced shifts for you. It sounds like you work very long days.

bunny your post made me laugh. I love the thought of "hypno guy" going;

"And now you will relax (munchmunch) and you are calm (rustleofcrisppacket)"
