Hello girls,
typing between contractions and sitting on my ball, mw is coming out to assess within the hour. Ooh, it's sore . Have been having contractions since about 2ish I think but they've been getting more frequent since about 6.30. DH in the kitchen with my parents, I've come in to the living room for a bit of peace and a cup of tea. Hope that all these contractions are getting somewhere and the mw doesn't find that I'm 1cm dilated and I've got days to go! Have been losing mucous plug all day (mmm, lovely) so am hoping that this is it...DD sound asleep in her bed, I wonder if she'll wake up to a new brother?

Dwayne I had a sweep with DD - I found it pretty painful, but some women hardly feel it. Caused bleeding, and baby did nothing! It works for some women though, so fingers crossed for you.

Looking forward to news from Bettymum!

stinkypinky · 11/04/2010 06:49

Helenwombat - I feel for you! I had family visiting for weeks before DD arrived, and the pressure is huge, but do not feel a failure please - the baby is not ready yet - simple as.

Bettymum · 11/04/2010 08:03

Morning ladies, stinky you're up early! Well, I had good contractions all yesterday evening, mw advised that I try and get some rest at about midnight, by which time I was 2 -3 cm dilated, so I went to bed (and DH stayed up to watch some dodgy action film - why??!) and dozed through the night, every time I had a contraction I'd wake up all confused. I think they stopped at about 6am and I slept for an hour. Now nothing doing, so I'm just going to get up and dressed and wait for things to kick off again!
Dwayne I had a sweep with DD, it did kick things off but then everything stopped again, then started, then another sweep...I think they work, but only if your body/baby is ready for them to work IYSWIM. I'm trying to avoid them this time, hopefully won't need one.
Well, will keep you lovely ladies updated, good luck for your sweep Dwayne.

Jennysbean · 11/04/2010 08:10

I had a sweep with DD on a Wednesday, contractions started gently on the Thursday and she arrived on the Friday. It worked for me so fingers crossed for you both . You must not feel a failure Helenwombat, no one else would think anything of the kind, you are just fed up and frustrated and I can completely understand that.
I am alreday tearing my hair out and am only one day over! Had such strong contractions last night and was trying to keep moving and upright but was exhausted so went to bed, woke up pretty disappointed this morning.
Its hard, the waiting game....
Still on a bright note, the weather is totally awesome so going to have lunch outside.
xx

thedollshouse · 11/04/2010 09:28

Hope there are lots of babies before the weekend is out, sounds like there are a few on their way. Helenwombat, I can feel your frustration, I'm not even overdue yet (due today) but I'm starting to feel the pressure.

I had sweep and was prepared for it to be awful but I hardly felt it - didn't get much of a chance to work though as they took me to break my waters 6hrs later - thaat got things moving though .
I didn't find induction too bad - not my ideal scenario but overall not disastrous and Hazel arrived safe and well in less than 6 hours from waters been broken.

Hello all, fantastic to see all the babies arriving! We finally moved house 3 weeks ago and it has taken BT this long to connect the internet so have been feeling very isolated! I still have just over a week to go until due date but keep convincing myself that things are starting especially as the head is 3/5th engaged which is quite unusual for a non first baby!! I have come down with a chest infection over the last day so am now on anitbiotics and steroids which is always a combination that makes my stomach bloat but don't think it could physically get any bigger!

tostaky · 11/04/2010 17:42

Hi everybody! It is lovely to see so much happening after so many months of waiting!!!
Aurel is sounds asleep atm, i gave him his first bath and he loved it!

So my birth story...
I had DP on duty every day to make things going and i think it worked quite well because i had a show on thursday (my due date).
On sunday evening i started to have very mild contractions about every 5-6 mins and i wasnt sure whether these were BH or proper contractions...
on monday i was useless, i slept and moaned all day long until DP took me for a short walk outside and in the evening cx came a bit stronger like every 5 mins or so
Tuesday morning i was feeling my contractions and spent the morning obsessing about how long this would go on for. I went for a walk in the afternoon but couldnt make it to the park.
At about 6pm, i rang my doula to discuss when to go to hosp. she said i was doing well at home and it was better to wait until cx were stronger. she called me at 8pm to check how i was doing and told me to relax and if things started to get heavier she'll come around. I decided to listen to my hypnobirthing CD in bed while DP was watching the football.
The CD was wonderful, i did everything it suggested and coped very well with my cx when suddenly i heard a "pop" and then i had to get up and my cx were about every minutes - it was just so scary, i was shacking! DP called the doula and he drove me to hosp - it was 11pm. I went straight to a room on the labour ward and a lovely midwife from the birth centre came (they were short of mw on the labour ward!) my doula came too.
Mw examined me i was 6cm so i said i wanted the epidural (which is not what i wanted initially). i went for a poo and lost my waters. The thing with VBAC is you know that if you ask for a c-section then all the pain and fuss would be over in 10 minutes... i really didnt cope well with the pain and G&A made me puke. Just when another mw came to ask if i still wanted the epidural i felt like pushing so i didnt had it in the end. i pushed for 1h32 minutes but this was a doodle compared to the cx!!! in the end i had to have an small episiotomy bc Aurel was too big! 4.1kg instead of the 3.3kg i was told at the growth scan a couple of wks ago!! At 2.32am Aurel was born. I did try a few positions for pushing (all 4s, standing and then stir-ups) and i have to say standing was good but stir-ups were even better although i wasnt very happy when they suggested it.
I am very happy with how the birth went although i thought i would cope better with the pain.
Recovery is 1000 times better than recovering from c-section and that is great! i am so happy i didnt have the epidural as well bc that would have slowed down labour and increase my chances of having more interventions.
Good luck to all of you!! The waiting is the worst bit i think but soon you'll all have your little bundle of love in your arms!!!

tostaky · 11/04/2010 17:44

oh and i just didnt care about the continuous monitoring or the canula - i was just busy coping with cx or pushing. Good luck to all the VBAC ladies!!

thedollshouse · 11/04/2010 17:56

pillia78- What a bummer having a chest infection now, hope you feel better soon.

tostaky - Great to hear of a positive vbac story. I hope mine goes as well if this baby decides to come out, I think he is quite comfortable in there and will have to be evicted. At the beginning when he was breech I was glad to be having a c-section, better the devil you know and all that. But now I have had the opportunity to get my head round a natural birth I'm feeling that I definitely want a natural birth and as time goes on I'm feeling anxious that he won't budge and I will end up having another elcs. I suppose in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter either way, as long as I get a healthy baby at the end of it he can come out whatever way he likes.

Snowtiger · 12/04/2010 09:15

Snowtiger · 12/04/2010 09:26

Right then, my birth story - a testament to the power of hypnobirthing if ever there was one!!

On Good Friday morning I woke up with grumbly period type pains and an odd sense that Wilf would arrive that day. I lay in bed having occasional, mild contractions and decided to listen to my hypnobirthing CD twice on the trot, as it has subliminal messages that are meant to make things happen really quickly. By 10am nothing was happening and the contractions had stopped, much to my dismay - I was really disappointed! So I got up, stripped all the beds, changed them, did 3 loads of washing and tidied the cupboards instead!!

By 4pm I was really confused - nothing doing at all, and I'd been so sure (the old Snowtiger Sixth Sense is usually right!) that something was going to happen that day. By 5:45pm though, I started having mild contractions again. By 7:45pm I was bouncing on my birthing ball, on MN reading the thread about "What do Contractions actually feel like?" thinking to myself 'are these proper contractions? Maybe they're not...' because I'd spoken to my mum who'd said "oh pains like that can come and go for days and you're still 9 days off your due date."

Like I said, that was 7:45pm. By 8:15pm (mid-Masterchef!) I had to call my mum to come over to look after DS and called the hospital as contractions were 5 mins apart! Mum and Dad arrived at 9:15 by which time I was in transition with contractions every 3 mins - curled over the birthing ball, howling. We got to the hospital in record time, how I managed that journey in teh car having contractions every 2 mins is beyond me but it wasn't much fun. The Midwife didn't believe how far along I was until I got there, went for a wee and said I had the urge to push. That was at 9:50pm. She didn't even have time to take my blood pressure or do anything other than examine me and see that I was 6 or 7cm dilated already. It was too late for pethidine or epidurals and there wasn't even time really for the gas & air to kick in (despite me gulping it down for dear life) so instead I just screamed and shouted and breathed my way through it!

40 minutes later, after just 2 mins of pushing, Wilf arrived, kicking and screaming and beautiful, with a full head of hair (which accounts for the 12 empty bottles of Gaviscon in our recycling box!).

So in all the labour was about 3 / 4 hours, and in effect I did it all without pain relief! So to answer the question does hypnobirthing work, I'd say yes - I can't imagine it would have been that quick, or that I'd have been able to cope with the pain with no pain relief at all, otherwise.

10 days on and we're settling down nicely - Wilf's feeding for Britain (sometimes all night so I'm pretty tired but doing OK) and still has his days and nights mixed up. Anyone got any good tips for sorting that out?! Midwife coming this morning to weigh him so hopefully he'll have gone back up to his birthweight - his legs aren't quite so twig-like anymore so I'm pretty sure he's put some on.

How are you other ladies doing? I really sympathise with those of you who are overdue, I was so fed up towards the end. Now though, despite the tiredness etc. I still get a kick out of being able to eat a full portion of food without having horrendous heartburn and even being able to bend over to put my shoes on makes me excited!! It's wonderful!!

Best of luck to all of you still waiting, can't wait to hear your good news soon. And once again huge congrats to the other new mums, I hope you're all getting lots of sleep and feeling well!

Oooh it's so lovely catching up with you all, I've had MN withdrawal symptoms!!

Jennysbean · 12/04/2010 09:39

Wow, Snowtiger, that sounds like my first birth! Well done you. fast is good! I can't remember - did you have to stay long in hospital?
I am having memory problems with what contractions feel like as well, when does it go from uncomfortable to agony!! - My labour was so quick last time that I cant remember much!
I have the sense that my baby is coming most days however so far he/she is staying put....so much for my sixth sense....I am 40+ 2 today and have period pains in the lower back plus have had a bit of a show over last few days.
Am going to change tack today as I keep going to bed to get some sleep. Today I will be mostly bouncing and walking around the near vicinity....
next stop, castor oil.....eek I don't think I could face that
bettysmum how are you - you sounded close and have been quiet for a couple of days??
xx

Boodstress · 12/04/2010 09:54

Tostaky Thanks for your VBAC story, it was picture perfect from an aspirational VBAC's point of view. As I was induced the last time I have begun to question if I will know when I start and I never worried about that last time round. You have confirmed what I have been saying to anyone that will listen, it is harder to have a section.
Snowtiger how great was your experience, A bit scary how quickly things moved for you but it sounded like you were in control (as much as you can be) which is what we want isn't it. I dumped my hypno birthing cd after my experience with DS1 but think I might just get onto Amazon cause a few of you have mentioned how useful it is when things start. I am scarily big and was practically told to move along from outside a cafe on Saturday as the two male owners were worried I was going to pop - I've got 2 weeks til my due date and despite the reflexologist being convinced I am not far away it could be another 3 plus weeks and I will have to leave the house .

Neeko · 12/04/2010 10:42

Hi all. Just adding my birth story to the mix 2 weeks after the event!

I had loads of pre-labour pains on and off in the weeks leading up to Hannah's birth and on the Saturday night we thought things were starting. So much so that we put my BIL on standby to come here for DD1 until my mum could get here. I went to bed and it all stopped. Found out the next morning that BIL slept in his clothes just in case!

On the actual day I had no pains whatsoever and a very normal day. Went to the loo at 5pm and my waters broke. That didn't happen to me with DD1 so I wasn't convinced. I phoned my DH to come home and phoned the hospital as I knew they'd want to check me. Whilst on the phone my waters really went and I was stood there dripping!

The hospital told me to come in at 6.30 so I made DH his tea and contractions started by 5.30 just as my mum arrived to look after DD1. By the time we left for the hospital at 6pm they were coming every 5-7 mins and I was using my Tens machine. I was really calm though -thanks to my Natal Hypnotherapy - and keen to get on with it.

When we got to the hospital I was monitored for about 40 mins which I found really frustrating as I wanted to keep active. My blood pressure was a bit high and there was a chance I wasn't going to be allowed my water birth. I was examined and was only 3cms which was disappointing as the contractions were coming thick and fast.

At 8pm we were allowed through to the labour ward. The lovely ward sister took one look at me and said I was further on than 3 cms and went to run the birthing pool. This and the preliminay checks took a while and I went into the birthing pool about 9pm. My labour MW had done my booking in appt at my surgery (a complete fluke) so it was lovely to come full circle with her.

The water really helped with the contractions and after a while I started on gas and air. It suddenly all got too much for me and i begged for an epidural but they worked out I was in transition. They were readying things to get me out to check when I felt the need to push.

Hannah was born after a few pushes and catching her as she floated up towards me is one of the best experiences of my life! I held her and tried to nurse as we waited for the placenta and we called my mum and MIL.

Pushing out the placenta was difficult so I asked them to let my DH cut the cord and hold her. It was only after the placenta was delivered that they discovered the litre blood clot. This meant that I needed an IV and I ended up in the high dependency unit. Despite this I felt like superwoman and I only had a small labial graze.

The midwives were amazing and had real faith in me. In fact every member of staff at the hospital was great, without exception.

2 weeks on and I'm tired due to the blood loss but feel so much better than after DD1's epidural, episiotomy and forceps delivery and DD2 is great!

It's lovely to hear all the positive stories.

My last birth was 6 years ago and so I feel like many of you not knowing when these uncomfortable BH are actual contractions.

My left ankle is so swollen it is very uncomfortable and sore by the end of the day. I want to keep active but it's very difficult because it makes the ankle swell more.

I have a scan tomorrow to make sure that the baby is still in the correct position after being turned by an ECV last Monday. I will be 39 weeks tomorrow and so hopefully it will be fine.

I hope all of you that are overdue will have your babies soon. I know how frustrating it is to go over your date that's why I keep telling myself that this one will be late too . Hopefully that will keep me going.
