OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
dinosaurinmybelly · 12/03/2010 23:03

filly I too am in awe at your energy and drooling at the delicious lunch you have planned for tomorrow. Enjoy!
Thank you for the recipe for pavlova - will definately try that this weekend.

gizmo - hot chocolate and trashy novel with a lovely alpine backdrop. Sounds gorgeous - have a wonderful time.

I've been knackered this week which I'm attributing to a bad case of haemorroids (sorry if TMI!) which always seems to make me tired. It is vicious cycle of me not then wanting to cook properly for myself and eating rubbish, which I know doesn't help the condition. DH has been working in London all week and has just emailed me to say that he is getting the late flight tomorrow as he expects to be hungover

wheredidmyfeetgo · 12/03/2010 23:33

Wow it has been busy round here, I've not been well this week and have had a mental week at work so have only been catching up, no time to actually post.

Dino Poor you, hopefully when your DH gets back he can take over with the cooking which may improve things for you?

Gizmo Hope you have a fantastic holiday, any change you could sneak me in your ski bag??

Filly I too will have my nose pressed against your kitchen window! Hope the back is easing up. And yes hold off till a quieter day to put DD into knickers.

Littlerobbo We seem to have developed Fish and Chip Fridays recently Yum!

Chestnut Sorry for the late wishes, hope you had a lovely birthday.

Greensnail Have a fab time in devon, we won?t forget you as long as you come back with Scones and Clotted Cream!

Barbeasty I too have an NHS dentist and have never had to pay in pregnancy. Had a check up a few weeks ago and will be going back in Aug for a scale and polish.

LaTrucha I really like Pumpkin patch too, but I?m lucky as we have one at our Outlet Village as well as a Mama?s and Papa?s.

Mampam and MrsDmamme Hope you?re both feeling better after your falls?

Anyone out there have any experience with 2nd child re speech? DS1 talks non stop, he turned 3 at the end of Jan. DS2 is 2 at the end of this month and hardly says a word. I?m not too worried as he has ways of getting across what he wants and his brother also seems to be able to understand him. I also realise that it?s sometimes very easy to get suckered into a conversation with DS1 and then realise that DS2 hasn?t been involved! Please someone tell me that have a similar experience and that I?m not a bad mum!

EssieM · 13/03/2010 12:26

Hi NotGrownUpEnough! Just joined mumsnet and was excited to see you have the same due date as me - 30 June. I'm 37 but it's also my first (late starter!)and we are also going for a surprise.

Hello to all the others. Please can I join your list?

goodname · 13/03/2010 14:47

Hope you have a great holiday gizmo. When we went skiing in Jan, I took a season of grays anatomy to watch on my laptop which cheered me up when I couldn't ski (I really love skiing).

Hope evryone else is having lovely weekends and your food has gone well Filly. I am being super lazy and snoozing in the sun as I slept really badly last night. Have to go out this evening to watch the Rugby (Scotland v England) with DH and some friends and then out for dinner at friends afterwards so getting some rest first.
Tommorrow is being spent with the DH family in Perth, visiting nephews and nieces and then taking PIL out for dinner.

Hope you are getting some better food now DIMB and feel better soon.

Where did my feet go, I have no children yet but my SIL's second son was very slow to start speaking and when he did speak he was hard to understand. It took until nursery for him to get fully comprehensible but now you cannot shut him up (at all, ever). I think all children are just different.

Sorry for all the people who are in pain just now. My back is getting sore and that makes me fed up enough so cant imagine how you all feel. Thinking of getting a memory foam topper to help with sore hips when sleeping actually. Anyone else tried this with success? Have a massive super king bed so unfortunatley have to fork out quite a lot for one.
Sorry for long post

goodname · 13/03/2010 14:50

Oh also been reading the baby whisperer after recomendations from here, think it all makes sense but also fills me with fear about what sort of baby I am going to get! Dont like the sound of a grumpy baby. Also fearful of whether I can realy be a good mum. Scared I am too lazy.
And speaking of fear I must stop watching One Born every Minute. I love it but it fills me with terror.

imkeepingmum · 13/03/2010 17:55

MillyMollyMoo thank you for the hypnobirthing stuff. Is this the book you were talking about? www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0285637711/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=103612307&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-strip e&pfrdt=201&pfrdi=0757302661&pfrdm=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pfrdr=0QS3FNXEB4Z8YFDD6MQV if so would it be useful to read even without doing the course?

Hi EzzieM!

NizzyNoodles · 13/03/2010 18:11

imkeepingmum I bought that book this week - I haven't got round to reading it yet though but hoping it will give me some ideas. I'll let you know what it's like when I actually to look at it properly.

MillyMollyMoo · 13/03/2010 18:24

Yes that's the one, ideally the course would be helpful too but I do think if you can just get your head around keeping calm and don't lie flat on your back it's got to be a better experience than most women have.
I tried hypnobirthing with my third because the 2nd was so horrific but looking back there were so many tiny things that should have happened which would have changed the whole experience.
Breaking waters to get things moving is a favorite of midwives which makes everything more painful and there's really no need and making you deliver on your back on the bed is certainly not for the mothers convenience, I won't be doing that again.

GibberingGinger · 13/03/2010 21:53

Back from a nice easy holiday at centreparcs. Was dubious before I went but it is sooooooooo easy and child orientated that it makes for a very relaxing time.
Have managed to find a local pregnancy yoga class which I'll give a try on Thursday. Might have left it a bit late as I'm so huge I can barely move and getting onto the floor is no small task!
Not much else to report, have spent ages catching up on all the posts,so am going to slope off to bed with my usual gaviscon nightcap

GibberingGinger · 13/03/2010 21:56

forgot to say Hi and welcome to all the new joiners.
And Filly, take care of that back - keep up the exercises that the osteo/physio would have given you, they really do help prevent it happening again

LittleRobbo · 14/03/2010 07:37

Welcome EssieM

Happy Mothers Day to all you mommys, and almost mommys Hope you all have a super relaxing, lovely, sunshiney day!

georgee · 14/03/2010 08:18

Hurrah, beautiful day here. Happy mothers' day all! and welcome EssieM

I've been reading everything but not posting for about three weeks - been at work in London much more and my screen is overlooked so Mumsnet activity is much more restricted. Just wanted to wish you all a great week - we're off to Prague on Tuesday for a few days - I've been before on a girls' weekend and obviously it won't have the same this time as I won't be drinking all that lovely beer! Still, looking forward to wandering round that lovely old town centre, visiting the castle etc, and eating loads of course!

Catch you in a week!

EssieM · 14/03/2010 11:03

Thanks for the welcome and Happy Mother's Day to you all!
Have been struggling with my back too in the last few weeks. Gibbering Ginger - I like the sound of your pregnancy yoga class. I live in a small village so classes thin on the ground here. Let me know of any good tips I can manage at thome!
Goodname - I've not tried the memoryfoam myself but a friend in the village swears by hers.

Elena67 · 14/03/2010 13:24

Afternoon everyone. Apropos of nothing whatsoever... Just to reassure other first timers who worry about Odd Things (ie everything that has happened for the last 6 months): Had a second episode of 'flashing lights in my eye (that may not be the actual medical term for it...) yesterday and, since my mw had done a bit of a plumbers sharp intake of breath when I told her about the previous one, I phoned the delivery suite at the hosp to see what they thought. Anyway, they were absolutely lovely - said they were sure it's nothing at all to worry about but to come in and they'll have a look at us both. Cue Saturday evening spent on a blood pressure test and listening to the frog's heartbeat on the monitor. A. this was MUCH more fun than what I had been planning(vegging in front of telly). B. got to have a beak around the delivery suite, like a real life 'One Born Every Minute' and C. totally reassuring how kind they were - saying I did the right thing and to call them again if there's anything at all worrying me. I wasn't particularly dreading going in in June but now I'm positively looking forward to it!

LaTrucha · 14/03/2010 14:53

Happy Mother's Day everyone! I was treated to a couple of hours with help in the garden! DH hates gardening, but kindly put up with me saying, 'O, cut that back please,' and '10cm deep, all along the row should do it,' while I calmly potted up summer bulbs.

He was freaked out at the price of flowers, so I am going to get the equivalent in plants of my choice from the garden centre next weekend. He's a good 'un, my DH.

Gizmo - the things I've received from PP were much nicer than I expected. Very pleased. I too have been offered lots of things second hand, although the friend who has most to give is overdue to give birth right now, so I won't get anything until her boy grows out of it. I think it's nice to have a few bits in to fold and look at, or is that just me? Also, I'm a bit of a freak about stains, and if these clothes have already been through two babies, I might demur.

Woofie - I am so looking forward to number two, but am also accutely conscious of this being me and DDs lat few weeks kicking round together. It's very happy sad.

Dinosaur - What food makes the piles worse? I haven't had the pleasure yet. Hope today is better.

Filly - so, come one. How was it?

Wheredidmyfeetgo - I am very sceptical about ages/development. DD is bilingual so slower but DH was monolingual, didn't speak until 2.5 and now is a lecturer in language and literature, speaking three languages and reading 5 more and moreover never shuts up. I'm sure it's easy for a second to hang back if they want. DH was a DC3. Are you actually worried (ie seeing no progress) or just aware he might be doing more?

EssieM - Hello! Same due date too!

Millymollymoo- very interesting about birth of DC2. Anything else help you prepare for the next birth? DD's birth was traumatic and I've started having nightmares about the next.

GibGinger - at Centre Parcs.

Georgee - enjoy prague!

Elena67 - lol at plumber's breath. That's what the hearing specialists do when they open my file at check ups. They don't xpect my hearing loss from someone my age, hence the breath. Makes me feel pants. Glad you had a lovely experience.

fillybuster · 14/03/2010 20:28

Happy mothers day everyone Had a lovely day and a fab weekend The cooking was all fine, although when dh and wrote up the meal plan and agreed we could knock most of it out on Saturday morning, I hadn't allowed for 2 dcs who were determined to 'help'. Cue everything taking about twice as long as normal, but they had a great time contributing and it was all finished and tidies up by the time the guests came at 1. Although I was bloody relieved I had done the pavlova and eve's pudding on friday afternoon

14 guests weren't much work - it helped that 8 were children and that they were all amazingly well behaved. So it ended up being a very chilled meal and afternoon, with 2 bottles of wine and a bottle of dessert wine getting put away (not bad, considering that of the 6 adults, I couldn't help much!)

Leftovers for dinner tonight, hurrah But lol @ LaT and the idea that dinner is like that every night chez Filly......you would be sadly disappointed - we generally manage proper cooking about twice a week and everything else is dug out of the freezer (I tend to cook in bulk) or of the quick-and-easy variety

Goodname - we have a memory foam topper (after years of pleading from dh) and it is totally fab. Its making a big difference to how well I can sleep this pg

Ellie - welcome

LaT, I'm hugely impressed by your gardening....I'd love to do more but dh won't let me do anything that involves bending over in the garden at the moment. Has anyone else been taken aback by the sudden arrival of March? I'm totally not ready, haven't bought my seed potatoes or anything else...panic...

Gizmo, I'm more than I can possibly admit...have a fab time.... Great website by the way - I look forward to many hours of slobbering slightly whilst reading

wheredidmyfeetgo - I had a similar thing with ds1 and dd1; he was chatting away by 18 months and she was much less developed but suddenly put on a spurt just around turning 2. Still much less clear than ds but talking a lot more- and I also have to get ds to let her get a word in. So unless you've got a reason to be worried, don't

dino - I suffer too (result of births of ds and dd), but find that eating a few dried figs/apricots every day and drinking plenty of water helps balance out any crap food days....

Off to Manchester/Rochdale tomorrow morning, so may be online on the train but should probably get some work done...so will catch up with you all on Weds/Thurs if not before

whenwillisleepagain · 14/03/2010 20:32

elena I had my first pregnancy at 38/39 and had flashing lights in the second half of it (no headache, no nausea). I ignored it first time and casually mentioned to mw at next appt, who told me I had to ring the delivery suite if it happened again. I did - got asked to go in right away and made to lie on my back so they could monitor the baby (no one was too worried about me) and I think the weight of the bump made me faint and it all got rather exciting. My experience was that it depended which MW I spoke to as to whether they were worried. It's happened again in this pregnancy (never had it before in life) and I mentioned to doc at 20 weeks appt, who said she wasn't worried, and to mw a couple of weeks ago who did exactly what your mw did! Disrupted nights and being even slightly thirsty seem to trigger it - but it must be primarily hormonal because my BP was fine throughout last pregnancy. Will find out tomorrow what it's like at 29 weeks in this one.

We just got back from a weekend away, which was lovely and saw lots of friends, nice cottage to stay in etc but the beds were so uncomfortable that I am longing for my own bed tonight and heading there soon.

Woofie · 14/03/2010 20:51

wheredidmyfeetgo - it doesn't sound like your ds2's language is delayed yet. In my experience (spend most of my working week assessing preschoolers' language development), it can go one of 2 ways with younger siblings - they either talk a lot very early on, aping what the older one says, or they sit quietly allowing the older sib to communicate for them (but taking everything in at the same time) then suddenly out it all comes. My dss didn't talk much until well after 2, but when he did it was in well-formed sentences, whereas ds was naming things much earlier, but it took him longer to figure his way round grammar. I don't think it sounds like you have anything to worry about atm. Giving verbal expression to his nonverbal communications ("Oh, you want your drink?" etc) is obviously a good strategy, but I'm sure you do that anyway. As the others have said, there's massive variation in the onset age and speed of acquisition of language, but unless you feel he's seriously behind his peers by 2:6 - 3yo, I wouldn't worry.

Welcome essiem

Glad you had such a good experience in hospital elena. I'm still totally undecided on hospital vs home.

millymollymoo - thanks for the book link. I think I'm going to give hypnobirthing a go, as now I've hit third trimester the fear is beginning to kick in a bit...

Happy mothers' day to everyone

Woofie · 14/03/2010 20:54

WDMFG - should have said, if you think he's actually struggling to articulate speech sounds, i.e clearly trying hard to name things but only managing grunts, then it would be worth seeking an SLT referral earlier.

MrsAlwaysRight · 14/03/2010 21:20

Happy Mothers Day ladies!

Had our private scan yesterday. All looks ok with baby. They estimate s/he weighs 2lbs 13oz already so don't think it will be small! Got 2 nice profile pictures although baby had its hands over its face all the time.

Sorry no individual messages - baby brain doesn't allow me to remember who has said what! Think I need to start taking notes!

justbeme · 14/03/2010 22:49

Hi - I agree - I can't remember who said what!!
Found out that Im Anaemic, after having the 28 week blood test results back - so am on double Pregnacare tablets from the Midwife.
Fab service - they came to my house for the appointment and then went to the Hospital for the blood results and then delivered the tablets back to me!!
Had been feeling dizzy and breathless, so am glad theres a reason!!

madamefreckle · 15/03/2010 00:15

justbeme, I'm on those Pregnacare too - and definitely feel they've helped a bit but they do turn your poo to clay colour!! Be warned!

Can't believe we are on page 7 already! So sorry I can't keep up with everything. Just wanted to say thanks for the info people have posted re. SMP/MA etc...think i'm right on the cusp so will have to research further!

My useless midwife has said she'll refer me to physio for my pelvic pain... let's hope that she actually does it as despite a weekend of taking it v. easy it's not improving. I am an obsessive walking person... I feel lost and miserable if I can't get out for a good stomp every day so I'm feeling a bit that I might be unable to do so for the next few months.

I have been reading Ina May's Guide to Childbirth - where she mentions that labour and childbirth can not only be very enjoyable but also orgasmic . Looking forward to reading on...! If anything like last time . But I've got an open mind!

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/03/2010 12:55

Afternoon all. I can't remember everything I've read over the past few days either - have been reading but not had time to post.

Anyway, been for 24 week scan this morning, and all still looking fine. Don't have to go back for 5 weeks this time, and I can reduce my blood testing to two days per week - huzzah!

meggymegmegs · 15/03/2010 13:29

goodname I have been reading the baby whisperer too and am a bit at the whole EASY routine thing. Keep wondering how you're supposed to actually have any kind of life if you do that. I mean, there will be times when you want to see people, go shopping etc and she doesn't seem to allow for that at all so am a little confused by the whole thing. Also living in fear of the 'grumpy baby'!

By the way, I've been meaning to say a big thanks to whoever it was on here (sorry I can't remember ) that recommended the Red Velvet Chocolate Heartache book by Harry Eastwood. What a revelation! I have done 4 recipes so far and they have all been amazing. No one can believe that they are fat-free. Why did no one tell me about this years ago?! I'm sure I would have been 2 stone lighter

I can't believe that I will be 29 weeks on Wed, it's all starting to go so fast now. I'm really starting to get much more tired too and everything feels like a struggle, so I can't bear to think what I'll be like in 11 weeks time. On a positive note, I am getting lots of nice 'you're blooming' type comments at the moment which are doing wonders for my self-esteem. Thinking it's probably down to the new Bobbi Brown make up I've invested in, but no one needs to know that!!

Had a very cute first Mother's Day card and flowers yesterday 'from the bump in your belly' which of course made me sob my heart out to the point where DH was actually getting rather concerned!

CantSleepWontSleep · 15/03/2010 13:34

Ah, it was me who recommended that book meggy . I made the syrup sponge pudding on Friday, substituting parsnip and courgette for the turnips as they are out of season, and it was yum. In fact I may be naughty and have the last slice in a moment with my cup of coffee!
