Baby with a big stomach - what does this mean

Hi I had my scan last week and although everything is fine. The scanner man said that the baby had a large stomach which could indicate 1) that everything is fine and that it was lying in a funny position 2) that it could mean I will be having a larger baby and that could mean I could be developing gastro diabetes - they are just going to monitor it. Just wanted to know if anyone has experienced this and can offer some advice or support.

Thanks
Cindy

How many weeks? Scans are pretty inaccurate in late pregnancy.

I am 21 weeks... but have been feeling lousy and now think it could be diabetes creeping up on me, or is that just my mind now thinking I may have it??

I have a glucose intolerance test in January and they are waiting for those results but I guess I can watch my diet. Its says not to eat rice, pasta or junk i.e. chocolate, crisps etc... and jams.

Good luck, I don't think U should worry. They are just guessing. Too much info from scans can do Ur head in (BTDT). Don't take it too seriously.

On the basis of tummy & head size at 34wk gestation scan I was told DC1 would be a 10-lb newborn. Doctors & MWs came up with all kinds of excuses why my bump itself only looked small.

DS was only 6lb 8oz when born 5 wks later!

Mine had a large stomach and short thigh bones

Turns out that she is just a bit short and fat

don't stress too much xxx

the scan said our ds had a big stomach and thought he may have diabetes. He is fine though.

Im 35 weeks and was high risk but they have decided im fine now .

at my 28 week and 32 week scan they noted the baby had a very large stomach.

Sonographer just commented on it and said baby must be eating well!!

It hadn't occured to me it was a possible problem but now im worried!!!

I too got the whole large tummy measurement thing at 21 weeks - neither the sonographer nor my MW were in any way concerned, MW just said that tubby babies are the norm these days because we all eat so very well! If you have gestational diabetes, it will show up in other ways and you MW will be able to spot it when they do all their routine blood and pee stuff - unless something comes up then, don't worry about it!!
