Hi Nati, I'm due the 18th with a wee boy who's my first too! Welcome

I've been a bit grumpy with poor DH as well and I'm secretly quite glad to hear others are too FlyingCloud, there's only so many 'minor' aches a girl can take before turning into a hormonal whirlwind, I mean, getting a bit narky. DH spent 10 minutes trying to sell Avataar to me as a film to see... not a chance I could sit in a cinema in one position that long, let alone stay awake.

I totally agree Woowa, the movement varies so much now from day to day now which can be a bit disconcerting. You're so right to get it checked out though, I'd rather be known as the slightly neurotic first timer than miss a problem.

How's the ankle Mawbroon? At least you didn't break your pelvis, the sister of a friend did and conceived shortly after - She had a horrific pregnancy.

WestLondonGirl we have week one of NHS antenatal classes starting tomorrow night so I wonder if I'll get to see the same video!

Thinking upwardly mobile thoughts for the low placentas and soothing ones for all the aches and pains.

Take care x

NatiFeb18 · 06/01/2010 22:47

Hi westlondongirl! I'm having the antenatal classes this weekend, through NCT. I've decided to do a full weekend instead of the 8 classes.
I'm a southwest london girl btw.
I had my GTT and it wasn't that bad. You won't be able to have water after the Lucozade either.. that's the toughest part of it, you need to wait two hours... go back for another blood test and then you are finally enabled to have water!!
So if you are planning to stay there take a book or some magazines as it is quite boring!
Good luck tomorrow!

westlondongirl · 07/01/2010 08:29

Thanks for the advice NatiFeb18 - have packed a book! Bit nervous about driving on the ice but will just take it slowly. I am already starving and so thirsty its ridiculous. Don't think baby is too chuffed as he keeps kicking me as if to remind me to eat!

NatiFeb18 I am based in Ealing btw - welcome to contact me via mumsnet.

Hope everyone else is doing ok. Mawbroon my next scan is on the 1st Feb so fingers crossed for both of us that baby's get into a good position and placentas get out of the way!

watercress · 07/01/2010 08:48

How on earth are you all managing to get on hiking or walking boots?! Shoes are a massive challenge for me, and I'd thought it was my bump that was getting in the way, but maybe it's my dodgy pelvis.

Hope all with aches and pains are faring OK, and those still working are being allowed snow days where applicable.

MrsJeff · 07/01/2010 12:38

Hi there ladies!

I've just been reading about everyone's pregnancy gripes (in "Pregnancy") and chuckling away - it's so reassuring reading this thread and that one knowing that I'm not alone in getting a bit grumpy with everything now! Although I don't have any broken limbs or horrid pelvis pain so I shall keep my grumbles to myself...I hope those of you who are having a rough time are feeling more comfortable at least.

Anyway, a VERY selfish question regarding alcohol ! As with alot of people booze is pretty high on my list of things to indulge in post-baby, but as I'm planning to breastfeed have no idea how you combine the two! There must be a way to manage both....mustn't there?

mawbroon · 07/01/2010 13:24

MrsJeff, there is loads in the archives about breastfeeding and alcohol. tiktok has posted a lot of good info on it.

Basically as long as you are not totally steaming drunk, then it should be ok.

Not sure I would particularly want to mix new baby and drinking though. I became tee total when pg with ds 5 yrs ago. It wasn't my intention, but the thought of it just didn't appeal to me once he was born.

ktpie · 07/01/2010 13:42

MrsJeff - as far as I understand it the alcohol doesn't concentrate into your breastmilk, neither does it store there, so the milk will have the same concentration of alcohol as your blood, of course babys are a lot smaller than adults so you need to take that into account. Because it doesn't store in the milk pumping and dumping is pointless.
I didn't drink very much when DS was very little, mainly because of getting up in the night to deal with him. Once he started sleeping through I used to drink a fairly normal amount once he was in bed (not every night or anything, that makes me sound like an alky), but then you need to remember that a hangover and early mornings and dealing all day with a baby don't mix well!

I'm still stuck in the house, got my midwife appointment this afternoon and feel a bit giddy about the idea of getting out of the house, DH is taking me so he will be able to take charge of DS and drop me off at the door if there is nowhere to park.

MrsJeff · 07/01/2010 14:18

Thanks, ladies. Still haven't got the hang of searching for things - roll on maternity leave when I can rummage to my heart's content! Can quite imagine that new baby + alcohol doesn't mix brilliantly for a number of reasons, I guess I'm just so excited about being let off the leash a bit after the birth! To be honest I can't imagine having the same approach to booze after being pg, though - while I'd like a bit more leeway the thought of getting absolutely steaming isn't very appealing any more...

Good luck with the midwife appt ktpie: it's beautifully sunny here so I'd love to be going out for a long walk...damned ice...!

Pops78 · 07/01/2010 17:38

Mrs Jeff I am with you on wanting a nice bit of booze when we get these babies out. Of course will do with care but I think the other thing worth pointing out is we will prob all be lightweights having not drunk for soooo long so prob can get away with getting merry on much less than before when bf.

Just got back from midwife and very pleased that she accepts my BMI was actually 29 when early pg but was put in overweight special clinic group (immediately meaning you are not allowed in birth centre at UCH Hosp) because I transferred at 15 weeks when my BMI had raised to 30.8 with pg. She has discharged me from special clinic so yippee birth centre is hopefully option now. After all that I'll prob go in screaming for an epidural with no care for birth pools etc... . Also she told me baby normal size and my weight gain completely normal its head down in good position... all very good stuff so am in brill mood and excited to go to my first NCT class tonight with DP..

I drove to hospital which was cool except for getting out of my quite residential streets, car was slipping everywhere - a tad scary....

Hope all are well and no more victims of dreaded ice...

Pops78 · 07/01/2010 17:40

Responsible mother follow up - Of course would not get too boozed up while in charge of newborn - pls don't call social services on me

woowa · 07/01/2010 20:22

sunnybump - how did someone with a broken pelvis manage to conceive?

Just went to Pizza Express where they now have a Leggera wine - that's less alcohol! So I had a glass. yum. Probably won't drink while BFing though, don't want to subject tiny little liver to it so soon. Is that the same for coffee?

Moan Alert: Had tour of hospital wards today, and NHS antenatal class, and everyone gave the impression that low dependency births are what they expect unless there have been complications in pregnancy. I got in the car when DH picked me up and sobbed and sobbed because I'm so worried my consultant won't release me to LOVELY low dependency unit. While I do have an underlying medical condition, it has had ZERO effect on my pregnancy, which so far (35 weeks today) has been problem free. But at last appointment she said "oh, the delivery suite is just the same, the consultant will probably only put their head round the door" But that's a complete fabrication. The low dependency suite has ensuite with bath, birthing pool, aromatherapy massage oils, a sofa bed for DHs... I have decided that at my 37 week appointment, if my BP is still normal, I am going to chain myself to the chairs until she lets me have it low dep. Actually what will happen is i'll burst into tears (that's what I do when overwhelmed with emotion and/or anger) and sob and plead with her...DH is 100% behind me so i know that I'll have him on side, and from my MW appointment yesterday I'm fairly sure the MWs will be supportive too. Sorry for rant, what would you do?

Drinking my new raspberry leaf tea! My mum just had a go on the phone because I shouldn't want it to come soon (as the tea is for bringing it on!), and when I said that 37 weeks is counted as term, she said it wasn't true and she'd never heard that before (she's a children's nurse). But i've heard it from MWs, NCT and internet that from 37 weeks it's fully grown and not counted as prem. Is that true?

END OF MOANING
x

DorindaG · 07/01/2010 20:27

I'm maybe being a bit of a thicko here, but what are the benefits of raspberry leaf tea?

I'm due 6th Feb and starting to get a bit antsy now. I really want to have my body back, but every time I feel a twinge now I think 'no no no, not yet little fella, mummy's not ready'! Thinking of giving birth is very scary! I know I can't be the only one that's getting the heebie jeebies about it with less than a month to go!

DorindaG · 07/01/2010 20:28

On a personal note, my perennium has never been massaged so much!

CocoK · 07/01/2010 20:46

Dorinda - Raspberry tea is supposed to bring on labour (in the same way as a hot curry or whatever). I just threw mine out - somebody gave me her leftover tea bags but I''m not 35 weeks yet and am booked in for a c-section so don't want no surprises before that, no thank you sir.

Woowa - my consultant said babies could still end up in special care at 38 weeks so (disappointingly) won't do c-section until I'm 39 weeks as this is considered full term for singletons (twins are considered full term at 37 weeks).

tryingtobemarrypoppins · 07/01/2010 20:53

Hello ladies, its been a while since I logged on! Glad everyone is doing well.

After my first baby born at 36 weeks (Woowa it is a bit early, they are harder work to feed and catch everything!! 10 days in hospital at 7 days old due to infection!! )I would highly recommend:

Arnica - took loads of this after labour and it really helped.

Lavander oil - I added this to my first bath and used it twice daily for a few weeks to heal the stiches.

Another tip is to have a bag of clothes/PJ's in a bag with your pants ready with the maternity towel already in them with your wash bag, so that when they take you to have that first bath, your totally ready to get out of the water!!!

Also these are great for the first 3 months

tryingtobemarrypoppins · 07/01/2010 21:00

Raspberry tea DOESN'T induce labour! - Lots of research into it, its great for toning and all round health though xx

tryingtobemarrypoppins · 07/01/2010 21:03

www.askbaby.com/raspberry-leaf-tea.htm

This explain all!

NatiFeb18 · 07/01/2010 21:41

Hi sunnybump! Yes we are twin mums to be .
Hope your GTT wasn't that bad westlondongirl. At least the roads were in better conditions today.
I've got hospital appointment tomorrow and will probably discuss options for my birth plan. I'm sure he will book a scan for me soon. So very excited about it.
I bought my Raspberry leaf tea today, but will read more about it as I'm a bit confused now after the different posts I read.
Still lots of things to buy. Royal Mail came today with my changing bag that I bought online, but I wasn't at home and they needed a signature! . So now I'll have to go to their offices to get it.

westlondongirl · 07/01/2010 22:22

hi Natifeb18, GTT was fine although I was starving by the time it finished! Good luck tomorrow. BTW be careful in the car park. They haven't salted it and today there was an inch of ice over the entire area. Lots of us pregnant ladies were slipping all over the place. I ended up walking by the cars and grabbing on for dear life each time I slipped.

Staying away from anything that might induce labour until my landlord gets of his a**e and fixes my flat

NatiFeb18 · 07/01/2010 23:22

Thanks westlondongirl. I'm leaving my car at the office and taking a taxi. It's going to be easier and safer... DH coming with me, so I'll use his lovely arm as my cane! .
I was starving too by the end of my GTT and ended up having a sandwich and a cereal bar from their shop! Couldn't wait getting anywhere else...
Good luck with your flat!

AbsB · 08/01/2010 06:04

Hi ladies,

Natifeb18 and westlondongirl I am also at Queen Charlotte's. Have either of you seen the birth centre? I am going to see MW today and she's booking me in to see a consultant to see if I can have a home birth. I'm feeling really pissed off and emotional at the moment because I feel so much pressure NOT to have one, and people keep telling me horror stories and telling my DP that he is being irresponsible and putting my life and LO's life at risk for wanting a home birth.

westlondongirl I also had my GTT and the worst part for me was drinking that disgusting bottle of lucozade. It made me burp! I ended up going home for an hour or so and then coming back, the waiting room was just too damn packed!

On the raspberry leaf tea front, I have read that you can start taking it at 33 weeks, one cup a day, and you build up to four cups a day by the time your due date comes round. I bought it a couple of days ago and am starting one cup every couple of days. It tastes lovely!

It's my last day at work today so only one more day braving the icy pavements to work! My colleagues surprised me yesterday with a fab present, a big bag of really sweet baby clothes with animals on from NEXT and a toy bunny, and a card signed by everyone! I was really touched... Shame my boss couldn't be a little more sympathetic, made me stay late even though I asked to go home on time to get to NCT. He said yes as long as I finish my work! Wanker!

Pops78 · 08/01/2010 08:44

Up since 6am again, though knackered. Poor old DP gets up every day at 5.30am and when he leaves I just can't get back to sleep. I know he's got the tough side but it is a pain.

NCT Class was really good last night, I think DP was really surprised how useful he found it defo made him feel more part of the pg with other men in same boat. All the talk about how these people and our children would be friends for years suddenly got me really paro afterwards about impression I gave. Did I talk too much, appear opinionated, offend anyone. DP says I did none of these things but I am just so sensitive at mo, suddenly felt it was sooo important what they thought of me as need local friends in same boat.

Thought you might find this amusing - I met a lady while getting bloods done yesterday who was 12 wks gone and spoke like she was a mother and medical pro, she was neither! Dismissed my little moan of being tired at 35 weeks and bizzarely said 'well sure you could do a hike couldn't you' HUH... 'You know a days hike' HUH... Prob couldn't have done a hike before pg let alone now... She then proceeded to say she had seen many births on tv and it would be nothing 'one day of your life, no big deal' I wonder if she will feel the same in 23 weeks....LOL

westlondongirl · 08/01/2010 08:58

Hi AbsB nice to here from another Queen Charlottes Lady. I haven't seen the birth centre as the swine flu shut tours down by the time I booked in. The MW told us about it and the delivery suite at the classes though. If I can help with further info feel free to contact me via mumsnet. I don't think you are irresponsible for wanting a homebirth, I think you are very brave! I wish I felt confident enough to have one. I'm terrified of giving birth. At the end of the day it is your decision and your partner's so balls to what anyone else thinks!

I did notice the other ladies sipping their lucozade & looking sick. I was so thirsty I downed it in 15 seconds and found it quite tasty. Even thought about offering to help them with theirs!

I need to get groceries in today but i'm scared of the ice outside our house. There is a small flight of stairs outside that has no handrail and is covered in deep ice.

Just got my GTT results all good. Still anaemic though even after 3 weeks of iron tablets

Clappedout · 08/01/2010 09:58

woowa I was wondering the same thing about the broken pelvis, ouch!

Also with you on the despair at not being allowed near the low dependency 'luxury suite'. I so long for a more relaxed birth after last time but because my BP is slightly high and was higher last time i seem to be in the clutches of the consultants already...may have a bit of a fight on my hands but who can be arsed at this stage?

I laughed a lot at reading yesterday that we need an extra 200 calories a day in the 3rd trimester, equivalent to ONE piece of toast and jam!!!! And the rest...my partner looked on in astonishment (and, I delude myself, awe too) as I ate my body weight in macaroni cheese last night followed by several slabs of banana bread, a yogurt and some chocolate, still ravenous! Not sure how it fits in.

marypoppins I think we are due on the same date, how are you doing?

So over this ice. Not sleeping either, anyone else awake in the small hours for 2-3 hours? I recommend 'Nurse Jackie' on BBC2 if you have watch again/IPlayer, quite dark but very funny.

Btw Holland & Barrat sell rasberry leaf tea if anyone is wondering, bit cheaper than neals yard.

Nikki87 · 08/01/2010 10:09

morning ladies, just spent ages catching up on everything, and now can;t remember who said what, lol! know how you all feel about the ice though, had to cancel my physio appointment at the start ofthr week cause was snowed in, and now the boilers broke, something about water in the pipes so its freezing at night! lets hope it passes soon! as loverly as snow is, NOT good for pg women, lol!

going to pack my hospital bag today, got the main things, but is there anything that you wouldn't expect to need that i should put in?

is anyone at Hope Hospital/Salford Royal here? can't seem to find many people that are going there, and all the people at my antenatal course last weekend didn't bother with me [maybe age related.... ]

anyway, stay safe, for all you on mat leave, enjoy, chill out! watch silly daytime TV =]
