watercress i don't think your overreacting, i'm working from home until it all clears up and giving DH a text each day to grab things from the shop on his way home. The pavements scare me more than climbing or hill walking (at least with those i had loads of training and hill walking is def over now and with climbing the guys pick me up from the house and have me on the tightest rope ever, in fact they've tried to pull me up some climbs and i've had to shout at them to lower me back down to the holds)

Is anyone else really hot, i'm glad i'm not pregnant in the summer. I have the house set at 12oC, and have to have the radiator off in the bedroom and still sleep with the window open. DH has to sometimes sleep in the spare room with a quilt, blanket and heater to warm himself up. I've always run hot, but this is extreme even for me.

I've been really lucky to have been given so much stuff. Have more than 6 bin liners of clothes and bedding, cot, moses basket, breast pump, bouncer, sterilising stuff and bottles with brand new teats and dummies (plan to BF though), baby monitor, pram and so on. In fact the only things we need to get is car seat and buggy (but the ILs want to buy us that), new mattress and some drawers/dressers (which will look out for on Freecycle). We plan to move to California in September so figured we didn't want to buy everything twice. Even been given pads etc.

Just 7 weeks to go

Pops78 · 05/01/2010 17:35

Hello All,

Gosh this weather seems to be having its impact. So sorry to hear about your ankle Mawbroon, certainly think that u did right thing ktpie, moving app to avoid a lone icy walk with toddler and bump.
Anyway I have a big moan about something which is my own fault frankly. I have now put on 3 stones and my bump seems humungous and really really in the way. This is not surprising however given my ridiculous diet, sure I shove in the odd bit of goodness but so much crap finds its way in for example today. bowl of muesli - peach - activia yoghurt - ham sandwich with wholemeal bread (sounds good so far) - cup of tea - wispa bar - half a twix - 1/4 of a tub of honey and greek yoghurt carte d'or ice cream - a whole ham and pineapple pizza - 5 crackers with butter and edam cheese - 2 glasses of tonic water - can of coke and its only 5pm so there will be more. If I go the next 6 weeks plus I will be the size of a house, I already am so - a mansion! The thing is it makes me feel awful so uncomfortable but its just so hard to stop, could I be damaging baby with too much food and wrong stuff!!!

I have a dreamgenii pillow which is great though I have to admit that I do spend about 30% of night still on right side because I literally lose all feeling down my left.

I got my raspberry leaf tea in Neals Yard, they sell it from jar, as much as you wish. Was told the capsules were very weak in comparison and go straight for tea. I haven't started drinking the tea yet as forgt what she told me. I am 34+2 so I think it's ok but maybe it was at 37 weeks, will have to google.

I haven't done a birth plan yet though do plan to do one. Am waiting to see midwife on Thurs and find out if I will be allowed into birth centre as my BMI was 30.8 when I transferred to UCH at 15weeks pg and 30 is the point at which they consider you a risk at overweight and you must go to delivery ward. Thing is I was 29 BMI at 10 wks when they would usually first see you so I am hoping that will be taken into account though I know I am not helping things with my weight gain at mo.

I got the Avent manual and electric breast pump at baby show as was good deal with some bottles and a microwave sterilizer. As 1st timer really don't now how good it will be but heard good things and liked the fact it had man and elec option in same unit.

I just bought 2 packs of maternity towels (6 in each) from mothercare so sounds like I have seriously underestimated my need on that front!

Thanks for the advice on the windows, might try that blackout sticky stuff and save some money which would make dp happy.

I am soooo ready for this baby to come and have my body back the LO is now kicking me black and blue.

I don't know if its everybodys cup of tea but I bought an outfit for labour at the baby show which I thought was quite good, here is a link www.womama.co.nz/collection/womama%20basics/group/11/page/1/style/Bwrap/Womama%20%20%20Birthing%20Wr ap Its called a Womama birthing wrap and is a wrap dress/nightie perfect for wearing before, during and after birth very good for breastffeding as well the way it does up. If it does interest anyone there are stockists listed on their site, I paid 45 for it at show. I have been wearing it already but think I should really keep it clean and ready in hospital bag from now....

Sorry for this massive post. Take care all.

pyjamababe · 05/01/2010 17:44

Definitely not alone watercress. I usually love snow and it looks beautiful from the living room window but when the car skidded as I tried to park in our (slopey) drive earlier I had a bit of a panic. 3rd trimester + snow and ice = PITA.

Thanks to everyone for your advice, I feel loads better. Have decided to hold off on the breast pump, maybe get two bottles and cartons of milk but leave them at my MILs house so they are accessible but not too tempting and I get A LOT more baby clothes and maternity pads next time I am out. Wish someone could guarantee I won't have this baby for at least 4 more weeks (am 33+2) then I'm sure I would chill out a lot.

Fairly snowbound here now so am taking the opportunity for another pjday tomorrow which will be spent clearing out the horrendous dumping ground nursery

Pops78 · 05/01/2010 17:47

Just found this on-line about raspberry leaf tea if anyone else is interested -

Once you have reached the 32nd week of your pregnancy you could begin with one cup of raspberry leaf tea a day and gradually increase up to 4 cups a day (although this may vary in accordance with the strength of the blend and the manufacturers instructions).

Also here is a link to buy the tea I got www.nealsyardremedies.com/raspberry-leaf-dried-herb

westlondongirl · 05/01/2010 18:27

Hi watercress. I am definitely freaked out by the weather! I seem to have lost all sense of balance and twisted my hip slipping on the ice. I also worry as DP is two hours away during the week so keep worrying he won't get here if needed.

Sorry to hear about your break Mawbroon, must be very painful.

Went to my first NHS antenatal class today. It was ok but I was one of 3 people who came by themselves, did feel a bit exposed.

Still in the process of getting the damp in my flat fixed with the usual incompetent landlord. I wish it was all fixed and I could get set up. Would feel a great deal less stressed then.

Have to go for a GTT on thursday. Forgot to ask if you can drink water - anyone know?

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 05/01/2010 18:55

Poor Mawbroon and WestLondonGirl. I txt my boss and said i wouldn't be going in as I didn't want to slip in the snow and injur baby and me especially as I have SPD. Plus DS couldn't go to mums as she was snowed in. Boss did not seem happy so I'll have to go in tomorrow despite the snow and I'm feeling very sheepish! Not that I should, mind!!

ktpie · 05/01/2010 20:23

Watercress - I'm glad you said that about the weather, I was OK about it before Christmas but now I'm really nervous about going out in it on my own with DS. Going to do an online shop now to stock up a bit.
I'm worried about DH tonight as he has gone off into the Peaks for his usual Tuesday night mountain bike ride (loon) and I'm worried that he won't be able to drive back.

bethylou · 05/01/2010 20:51

I have been told not to go in to work tomorrow due to the ice and snow - my boss is lovely thank goodness. I am generally not at all bothered by driving in adverse weather and laugh at my 50-something year old colleagues who go home after two flakes of snow, but I am actually a little nervous, especially after Mawbroon's misfortune.

Adding my bit to the formula/pump questions: I breastfed exclusively for 4 months last time but had some cartons of Aptamil in just in case and a couple of bottles. Just the fact that they were there reassured me and I didn't need them in the end. As for a breast pump - I got through two tommee tippee manual ones in 5 months using it at least once/twice a day. I found it to be really good and, when I tried a medula mini electric, found it slower and noisier, but different things seem to suit different people. I bought them form mothercare and when they broke they replaced them free of charge for me without any quibble.

Am beginning to panic that we haven't got very good cover for DS when I go into labour. MIL was going to be on standby (an hour away anyway) but has now given us a list of dates that she can't do - yikes! Must programme baby to avoid them...

sunnybump · 05/01/2010 22:16

Yep, the ice is freaking me out too. It was crazy making it to the docs this morning, they're doing pretty well with the main roads but the side roads and pavements are like ice rinks. Good news is the Doc has signed me off for the remaining 10 days I was meant to be working so I'm on Maternity Leave, Yay! I feel a lot less stressed now.

Mawbroon, I'm so glad you have your IL's to help. Have you got any sitting down projects to keep your mind occupied, I'm thinking crochet or something - my blanket's getting quite big now. I haven't heard of the BF thing you mentioned, any good sites that explain it?

I was considering the whole formula as a backup thing and have decided to wait and see - I think I would be too tempted to give in when tired but that's just me. DH and I had a chat and he is happy to be sent to the huge 24hr Tesco 12 Miles away if need be. Same with clothes, I have 8 vests & 6 sleepsuits in Newborn and about the same again in 0-3 months. Not loads but enough to get started I reckon.

Got some more (bigger) slouchy trousers ordered from the Blooming Marvelous Sale as some joker is shrinking my clothes I can't possibly get bigger can I

I have 2 pillows and can recommend both for different reasons, this one, great for propping up to sleep when the indigestion is bad and will be handy for BF too. And this one, handy for wedging under bump especially when bump is a weird shape. But I got both from ebay months ago at bargainous prices.

While on the subject of ebay... I also got some blackout lining recently from here for lining some curtains but it's proven good for warmth too as well as keeping out the light. Could you just pin a length up?

Good reminder on the raspberry leaf tea. I like the thought of a nice easy second stage of labour!

Jeez I've gone on and still think I've forgotten to reply to someone...

Keep cosy and safe everyone.

AngelaCarleen · 06/01/2010 09:43

Started drinking the raspberry leaf tea yesterday, it's not half as minging as I thought it would be. My Aunt is a midwife and she seems to think it's a very good idea. She rings me every night now to see what my Bean is up to .

Midwife phoned yesterday, they've cancelled my antenatal class because of the snow so now instead of just two, I will have only 1 class. Came off the phone crying, I'm such a loon! To be honest the midwifes are obviously getting in so surely they should just have left it up to us to decide if it was safe to go out. Or maybe I'm being unreasonable, I don't know. I'm just worried that I'm missing out on something important, she said that they'll answer any extra questions we have after the session next week, but I don't have a flippin' clue what questions to ask, what if I don't ask something really important? (first-timer panic emoticon).

I feel like I have to keep my house in a constant ready for visitors state in case I go into labour and my mum comes up. Luckily my lovely DH is in love with the dyson, but still it's a PITA, especially with a house cat and a house rabbit running around making a mess! Is anyone else feeling like this?

Anyhoo, I'm off to wash some baby clothes and then get DH to (finally) put those pictures up in the baby's room.

xx

mamaloco · 06/01/2010 11:41

westlondon when I did my GTT test, I couldn't even drink water. But I did sip a bit because it was impossible not to. as long as you don't gulp a whole glass or bottle beforehand you should be OK. But different clinics have different protocols, call them back and ask.

For the snow, the snow itself is not a problem, you need proper walking boots (mountain or half mountain ones), NO wellies (there are death trap on the snow), trainers or leather shoes and walk very slowly. As someone pointed out you can pull up thick woolen socks on top of your shoes. No pram and toddlers either. Here it has frozen which is a PITA as it means I am stuck at home too. I nearly fell over going to the doc yesterday.

ElCS on the 28 of jan, I did convince the doc to push it a bit (from 22nd) so I guess 38+5 is OK for a delivery. He seems concern again that is a v. big baby (already 3 kg week 35), and want me to go do the some glucose testing again. But completely ignores familly history of big babies, and my bump which already measures 40 weeks (long baby too, her bones are already bending). Saw her on the 4D scan because of fear of diabetes, she looks like my brother, not good for a little girl! not good for my pocket too. I mean the 4D scan

Good luck for all those stuck at home, I guess it is time to do those tax return...

The snow really is affecting us all at the mo.. Dh and I are leaving for the hospital shorlty giving ourselves an hour to get there incase the roads arent good. Just hope it clears before the babys on his way. DH was taking to one of his female colleagues today and she has just returned from Maternity Leave and was telling him how she went for her hospital tour the month before the baby was due and went into labour and left with her baby!!! Great I did say to DH I have visions of that happening.. just paranoid I know.. but it is my Grandma telling me that I will have the baby on my 34th Bday like she had her last which would mean tommorrow..!! and she is the one when I was PG with Nicole at 27weeks told me to get my bag packed for the hospital. I tolde her I have plenty of time but was admitted the following week until the birth!! so my mum had to do all the baby shopping and stuff for me as I had NOTHING.. Hoping she hasnt jinxed me again.
Sorry for waughling on ..

Take care all will let yo know what it is like.. I am going to askk re pain relief as the germans do not do G&A so will be checking that it will be the same in Bielefeld as it was in Versen when I had Lee..

Take care all and if you have to go out in the snow be very careful xxxx

Dee2009 · 06/01/2010 12:06

mamloco they are concerned about my baby being large as well have had 2 gtt test both normal, i had a scan yesterday and his estimated weight this week was 8lb 1oz and i was 36wks yesterday. I'm quite small so they are a bit worried they are also concerned about my mother nearly dying giving birth to my brother (who was not quite 9lb) i was hoping they would suggest c-section, but instead they want to try inducing me prob on sunday! can i try anad insist on c-section not really sure how everythink works as am first timer an obs want whats best for babe!! But after reading up on things it looks like they might end up waiting a week then doing c-section?? very confused any adivce would be gratfully recieved..
MAny thanks

Clappedout · 06/01/2010 12:27

Hi all,

For what it's worth on the formula/expressing front I would recommend having a pump to hand as my milk didn't appear til quite late last time as my DD couldn't latch on properly and got really cross. It was all horribly stressful and I had to go back into hospital and was hooked up to an expressing machine like a cow. It did the trick though and I managed to BF for 7 months. This time I am going to hire an electric one from NCT for the first few weeks to avoid the same thing happening. I would also recommend having some emergency ready made up formula handy, I used a bit of both in the early days and then got into a pattern of DP giving my DD one bottle a day late evenign so i could go to bed early and ti worked really well, I BF the rest of the feeds. Nothing worse than a hungry angry baby, too much stress.

Snow panic is very contagious. I lay awake last night worrying about having enough food in the house and not being able to get to hospital!

Just had a consultant appointment and she muttered casually I could be induced in two weeks if the baby's weight doesn't increase enough or my BP goes up-NOT READY FOR THAT!

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 06/01/2010 12:29

Dee- they were concerned about my baby being large- I'm 33 weeks and they did a scan yesterday and she's only 5lb so all is well. Sorry to hear you're going through troubles. I was induced 1st labour and thought I had a horrible time and got PND, however, this pregnancy we've had that many problems with bleeds and her heartbeat and things, they could cut her out with a rusty butter knife and as long as she got here safe I'd be happy. Growth scans arn't always right by the way. Speak to your obstetrician or even midwife and ask every single question you can think of. What are your concerns about induction? C-section has a much longer recovery time. Write your questions down and grill them, firstly they see that you're actually interested so they will share the info with you, and also, I found that first time mums get pushed about and told what to do- it is important that baby gets here safely but it is also important that you're happy with what's going on and you fully understand why.

T4tastic · 06/01/2010 13:32

Happy new year all. First time messaging since crimbo.

Off work again, have a really nasty cough, I was worried that it might kick-start contractions. So the doc has prescribed a course of penicillin.

I did try to get in to work today, but turned back having been told that the carpark was a no-go, and that the steep hill up to the building would challenge Sir Edmund Hilary, let alone a 35 week PG me! Also thought about Mawbroon - you poor thing.

I've been reading your thoughts about BF and I had a very interesting conversation with a friend who is now a trained BF counsellor. She said that baby can go for 3 days without any feed as it stores up supplies before birth. (I'm sure I'll panic after 3 hours however!!) So keep the formula at bay, and keep trying is what she suggested. There are also lots of BF groups around the country, who are happy to have you go along before the birth to get advice.

Take care all. T4 x

mamaloco · 06/01/2010 14:46

Dee I have an elective not because of big baby per se but because I already have had an emCS last time and horrendous labor. Big baby too (4.170 kg) stuck OP wich went in distress after 37 h of labor. I am quite tall. So quite different than you. I wasn't induced but augmented after 24 h+ (can't remember).
I am sure if I was in the UK now they would push for a natural delivery, as I think they are thinking more about their % than the mum's wellbeing. Being induced is quite scary and can failed If you are worried you should talk to your midwife and don't be ashamed to take a 2 or 3 advice from diffrent consultants.
Are they inducing because your pelvis is small? or just because baby big? are you sure of your dates as well? That might be why they are advancing delivery on your dates.
I would call back the obs and ask a lot of question, and ask why he doesn't recommand CS, so at least you will be fully inform. Take someone with you to the appointment who don't loose is cool and can ask question for you if you are intimidated (make a list and take it with you too)
sorry I can't be more helpful

FluffyCoo · 06/01/2010 14:49

Blimey, lots to cach up on!

Brilliant advice re formula supplies etc - I too was wondering whether I would need to get in some "emergency" formula, in case BF doesn't go too well, but now I'm thinking i'll just leave it and see how I get on (Milton Keynes is 24hr supermarket/late night convenience shop capital of the world so I don't anticipate it'll be a problem grabbing some if all else fails!) Knowing that baby can keep going on reserves for a bit is really reassuring - thanks for that especially T4!

Raspberry leaf tea - check! my pg book says 2 cups a day from 34 weeks then building up to liberal swilling whilst in labour!! Anyone going in for this perineal massage malarky? I've been thinking about it but i'm not sure I can reach...!

Agreed that snow is a total PITA (and VERY scary watercress) - headed into work this morning post rush hour to let all the nutters get out the way first and the journey was fine - big thick flakes started falling again at lunchtime though so I've come home (my work is a 40 minute drive from home on a good day so not taking any chances). Arrived home to find that DH had spent his lunch break clearing and salting our drive and the path outside our house so I have nothing to slip on! Bless him!! . mamaloco makes a very good point re hiking boots though - they are not sexy, but i've been living in mine through this bad weather and feel so much safer walking in them! Hope eveyone is staying safe xx

We really are getting close now - what with all this talk of booking inductions and CS's, seems like we could have our first arrival any minute... eeek! Lots and lots of hugs to everyone who is worried or feeling down xxx

woowa · 06/01/2010 16:21

fluffycoo, i'm also living in walking boots. Honestly I don't look my most beautiful anyway at the mo, so i'm sure my feet looking big and ugly is ok! Managed to get to see MW without falling over. She says she thinks baby is now kind of at an angle, head not in pelvis. grrrrr - don't want it to move out of facing right way! Its head WAS in the pelvis. Should be sitting on the ball really shouldn't I? I have had about 12 appointments through this pregnancy and am yet to see the same MW twice - i am not kidding! Think NHS not meeting that target here. I don't mind to omuch though,, as they've all been nice, and it maybe means I'll recognise the one who delivers me.

Going to buy Raspberry leaf tea tomorrow, on all your advice. yum! Let's get these babies out quickly! Amazing that some of you will be having them this month with booked in CS! eek!

Right, kitchen = pigsty so off to clean. Warning - i hoovererd this morning and bending over, threw up the cereal I had just eaten, though it went back down again. YUK and ew to uterus pushing food out of stomach. Am now planning to avoid too much housework!

mawbroon · 06/01/2010 16:30

Hmmm, re hiking boots. I was wearing very sturdy walking boots when I fell. I saw that my boot was gripping on the ground as the rest of me fell over. I can't help but feel that if I had been wearing less suitable shoes, my feet would have gone from under me and I might just have a bit of a sore bum now.....

Re the breastfeeding, my ds didn't latch properly for 36hrs after delivery and survived on his reserves just fine for that long. In terms of colostrum, we are not talking much more than a few drops at a time to be enough to keep them going and it is often possible to express some then sook it up into a syringe to feed the baby with if need be.

I started this post a couple of hours ago, then some visitors came, so sorry if it x posts with anyone!!

flyingcloud · 06/01/2010 17:41

Hi everyone,

Sorry to read you're all having snow panic - we've got none here at the moment, although it's freezing cold and about 98% humidity.

Pops I wanted to say that I have put on a lot of weight too in pregnancy. I tend to put on weight easily and have just troughed myself through pg, although I have eaten three healthy meals a day. I cook for DH lunch and dinner, so I just end up snacking and grazing while I am cooking and then eating more and more. My weakness has been chocolate though, I haven' been able to get enough of it.

Sunnybump I think DH must be putting all my clothes in the dryer or something, as they are all shrinking too! I have some breastfeeding/maternity pyjamas that now don't come half-way down my bump. I am now in a shirt that used to belong to DH's grandfather and it is huge and very comfy. I may live in it for the rest of pregnancy!

I am seriously strugging with backache at the moment (just behind my ribcage, if that makes sense) I can't sit down for longer than an hour at a time, which is making work very, very hard as I have lots of reports to file before I finish. I have just had a batch though and feel better. Poor DH, I complain so much at the moment.

I'm also a bit worried as I have had very little movement today - a small bit this morning while I was lying in bed, trying to psych myself up to get out of it and a small bit this afternoon. I'm not sure how much I should worry - yesterday I had lots and lots of movement.

The good news! We bought our pushchair in the sales today - woohoo, got the last one (sales only started today in France) in the colour we wanted and saved about ?300 overall. We got the Bébé Confort Loola Up (in black), with the creatis fix (and we've been lent the Windoo by BIL). Such a relief to have that. We're supposed to be taking a day off tomorrow to go to Paris to finish baby shopping, but not sure how my back can cope with it - not just the shopping but the sitting in the car (seriously more than an hour in the car has me in tears). We're also supposed to be going to see Avatar in the evening, but I think I may struggle to stay sitting down and will probably miss most of the film getting up to pee!

Ordered my raspberry leaf tea as well so will start glugging when it arrives.

Mawbroon hope you are surviving.

Right must go cook DH's supper, he'll be home soon.

woowa · 06/01/2010 18:17

flyingcloud I've hardly had any movement in the last 24 hours or so, but heard heartbeat today with MW. They make us panic so much!! (the babies, not the MWs). Can you ring up the hospital anytime you like in France? Always better to know, i think. Call if you are worried. I'll let you!

Well done on the pushchair bargain!

Am also cooking DH's tea, so probably should go look at it. It could be in cinders and ash while I while away the hours on MN...

NatiFeb18 · 06/01/2010 21:23

Hi there, just found this group and I'm really excited about it.
I'm 34 weeks now (due date Feb 18th), will be having my first baby at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea hospital, and I already know it's a boy.
I'm still working, and stayed in today due to the snow.
I got great tips from your posts, so thank you! I'll buy my tea tomorrow too.
Hopefully the streets will be better tomorrow...
Take care!

westlondongirl · 06/01/2010 21:41

welcome to the thread NatiFeb18. I am having mine a QCCH too (due on 27th February). Have you had your antenatal classes there yet? Started mine on Monday.

Thanks to mamaloco for the advice re GTT. You are right so in three hours I will have to stop drinking too.....it's making me very thirsty! Just hoping the snow/ice will be ok in the morning for the drive in.

By the way how are those with low lying placentas fairing? I had my scan on Monday and they said it had moved a bit but not enough so will rescan in 4 weeks. Bit frustrated as was hoping to find out whether I would be having a natural birth or not (although after watching the birthing video at the class I felt like begging for a CS! )

I have a scan for my low placenta on 2nd Feb WestLondonGirl. I think I will see the consultant shortly after that, but don't have an appointment as yet. My baby seems to have shifted from the breech position, but he's still not head down I don't think. I reckon he's lying across the way as my bump is a crazy shape!

I have a midwife appointment next week, and when I phoned to tell her about my broken ankle, she said it would be no bother to come out to the house, so that's one less thing to worry about.

This poor baby has taken a back seat the whole pregnancy, what with us all being ill for weeks on end, and now this. I haven't even begun to think of names for him. DS wants to call it MakkaPakka.
