fiziwizzle · 07/12/2009 13:59

Welcome newcomers! I hope that you get a MW appt soon Abs, I've been seeing mine every three weeks from 25 weeks and it will be every two weeks from 34w.

Love the Christmas namechange ktmincepie! Im finally feeling a little Christmassy, after spending the weekend baking Christmas cake and pudding, and making mince meat for mince pies . No shopping yet though [slightly stressed emoticon].

Can I ask what brand/type of nappies you've bought woowa and GuernseyFrench? I haven't bought mine yet (like washing baby clothes, decorating the nursery and, erm, everything else, that can wait until after Christmas and blessed ML) and am thinking of just going for terries as at least Mum will be able to show me the ropes.

Enoko my weight gain has slowly risen from the bottom of the graph I'm using, to the top. I shudder to think what effect Christmas will have, when I put on three pounds in three days eating cream teas in Cornwall ...

I think it's just sinking in that I'm HAVING A BABY. Quite scary to think that these are the last few weeks DP and I will have to ourselves for a long time...

GuernseyFrench · 07/12/2009 16:59

fizwiwizzle I bought the Bumgenius one size all in one nappies as they were the ones which were filling most of my criteria.
There are lots of online shops doing them, I bought mine from there as it was the best price for postage to the CI.

I have just washed the inserts for the 1st time as they apparently need a few wash to get their max absorbency.

sunnybump · 07/12/2009 17:48

Hi everyone and welcome Abs and Enoko

I've had a bit of a domestic goddess day... I have made scones [fingers in the ears emoticon singing to myself while the weight issue is being discussed], sampled said scones with jam, taken up both pairs of living room curtains and done some housework. Now I've written it down it seems rather little but I was wearing a pinny for some of it!

My Little One is wriggling lots too Ktpie, sometimes it's so lively that it's a bit freaky to be honest. And sometimes he does it in a way that sets off braxton hicks which are pretty uncomfy. Anyone else getting this?

Nikki87 · 07/12/2009 18:10

hey sunny, i'm getting tonnes of braxton hicks, so bloody uncomfortable, but i see it was a way of 'preparing' myself, lol! and you've done a lot more than i've done today, I've just put the [fake, predone] xmas tree up, altho with 5cats, it is a little harder than it sounds, hehe!
enoko, where abouts do you live, only there isnt much around my area either... could be the same area... hmmm?
glad to see every1 is ok

AbsB · 07/12/2009 19:03

Hey Sunny, fizzi, Nikki and all,
What do braxton hicks feel like? Baby sure is lively but I'm not sure what I'm meant to be looking out for???
I'm very impressed with everyone putting up xmas decorations... I'm waiting for DP to come home so I can lie on the sofa and point !!!
Scones sound very nice indeed, I made a pear, blueberry, chocolate sponge cake which is great for those sugar lows! I haven't done ANY xmas shopping yet... I feel like I've gone into hiding... Terrible!
Are most people opting for reusable nappies? I really want to do it... I'm sure it's been discussed a lot but has anyone tried it, and how successful were you? Has anyone tried a nappy service or is it just a matter of having the washing machine on all day?
I have so many questions... might have to pitch up at the hospital on Wednesday and ask for a new MW...

raindroprhyme · 07/12/2009 19:23

i am going to use terries. Used them with DS2 till he was potty trained and despite becoming a nappy addict still prefer terries. Much easier to get a good fit with different folds and dry really quickly as no layers. In the begining i washed every other day but by the the time he was weaned we were washing 3 times a week in with DH's rugby kit.

I love nappies and have every fabric and stlye under the sun. They are all washed and ready for bumps arival. i have one pack of huggies that i got free in a bounty pack thing so will prob use them the first day or two till i get back into the swing of things.

Nappy services tend to only use one type of nappy so if it doesnt suit your little one you are stuck. Also lots of peole don't like the idea of not getting your own nappies back IYSWIM. Although they are laundered to Hospital standard.

if anyone has any nappy questions feel free to ask.

AbsB · 07/12/2009 19:41

Thanks raindroprhyme, that is very helpful, I like the sound of terries... Where do I buy terries from and what do I need to look for? Do i need to buy different sizes for different stages? Do you recommend disposable for the first few days or just go straight into nappy washing routine?

Do they have poppers? velcro?
I'm am completely new to this, so have no idea but really want to do what's right for the environment...

Thanks for all your help.

AbsB - I bought my nappies from thenappylady.co.uk They do a no pressure advisory service and ask you lots of questions online to advise you on what they consider to be the best nappies for you. They recommended me Flexitots as they are good for tall babies (DH and I are both quite tall). I've been happy with their service so far, but then, I have no baby yet.

(Btw, if anyone thinks flexitots are awful, please don't tell me as it's too late!)

Also, Braxton Hicks contractions are when your uterus goes rock solid! Mine last anything from 30 seconds upwards, and are great for practicing your labour breathing!! And they do seem to happen more when i'm kicked!

Speaking of which, my DC kicks me when I lie on my right side in bed, so hard I have to turn over. It's quite funny. And shocking! But I'm always glad to know it's still alive

FluffyCoo · 07/12/2009 20:05

Hello ladies!

Welcome absb and enoko hope you're enjoying the thread!

Nikki re change of quacks - definitely worth it, and reeeealy easy!! Just made a half hour appt with the practice nurse at new surgery to fill in the little form and be given info about the practice (oh and pee in a bloody bottle again... why are these people so obsessed with urine?) - job done! They'll get my notes from the other docs so nothing for me to stress about! There's nothing worse than having to visit a doctor who you think is an idiot!

Ktpie - loving the festive name change! Made me giggle!

Re the nappy issue, I too am going to try re-usables BUT, only once I've got the hang of BFing - one step at a time I say! Never changed a nappy in my life - I feel a steep learning curve coming on...! FWIW, the latest Mother and Baby magazine tested different brands of re-usables and the Bumgenius nappies that GuernseyFrench has got came out top.

Can't believe how active LO is now! I've had a rotten cold and pulled my stomach muscles down one side quite badly during the many coughing fits - my little sadist seems to particularly enjoy wriggling and aiming BIG kicks in that area! Ouch! Not sure if I've had any braxton hicks though - presumably I would have realised if I had...?!

pyjamababe · 07/12/2009 20:54

Evening All

Would you definately know if you'd had a braxton hicks? I don't think I have. 29 weeks - is this a problem?

Now changed mind from a bugaboo travel system to the iCandy apple - anyone got any experience of either? Would welcome opinions.

9 days of work to go ktmincepie your new name is making me hungry!! No change there then...

Enoko · 07/12/2009 22:15

Hi Nikki87 - I'm in Banbury, North Oxfordshire. How about you? I've reassured myself today by checking out all the baby groups there are for once I "reach the other side", and there's plenty going on. It seems it's just the antenatal stuff that's a bit lacking.

Re the nappy debate, I'm definitely going to go for reusable, and hope to get them secondhand as well to try and up the environmental factor. (After an initial breathing space period of a couple of weeks disposables though, I have to confess. Totally with you there, Fluffycoo, oh, and thanks for highlighting that M&B article!)

I'll be interested to know what make anyone else has used or is going for. A friend from work really recommended Fuzzi Bunz.

Has anyone used a free trial service in their area, or gone to one of those Nappucino events?

Nikki87 · 07/12/2009 23:21

enoko i'm manchester, shame, it would have been nice to have someone close.
PJbabe and absb, you would know re braxton hicks, your whole stomach goes rock solid, and it kinda takes your breath away. don't think its a bad thing you've not had them yet, some websites say you get them at 32/33ish weeks
thanks fluffy, i think I'll get myself swapped over in the next week or so, altho i'm not looking forward to being re-prodded for blood and stuff, yes, they do seem obsessed with urine, lol!

ktmincepie · 08/12/2009 10:02

I'm another Terries user, AbsB they are the old fashioned square flat things. Mine cost about £1 each, you also need something to fasten them with, I use Nappy Nippas, waterproof wraps, I like the Motherease airflow ones and liners. I've got some Totsbots as well, which are fine but the flat squares are so much quicker to dry we just use them now. Another good thing with the terries is that if you buy a pack and don't like them you can use them for all sorts of other jobs!
I'd say try a few different types and see what suits you this is like ebay for nappies.
I tend to use disposables if we are going out all day or on holiday and I used them for the first week or so. FluffyCoo I'd never changed a nappy either when I had DS but you soon get the hang of it.

Enoko - is there a canal in Banbury? I think I have been there on a boat.

Sometimes my Braxton Hicks feel a bit like the baby is doing something really funny, then I realise what it is.

Are people feeling the baby hiccup yet? DS hiccuped all the time but I can't remember when it started and this one hasn't hiccuped at all which is worrying me!

mawbroon · 08/12/2009 10:37

I used terries with my ds, on and off. I started childminding 50 odd hours a week when he was 11months, I kind of got bogged under and went back to bio disposables. Must try harder this time...... I won't kid myself that I can do resusables all the time, but I guess a mixture is better than using none at all. At least the summer weather (!!) will be round the corner shortly after these babies are born, so drying them hopefully won't be a problem.

I was at the doc again today about my thrush. I have had a single pessary, followed by a course of 3 pessaries and the thrush is still lurking, so this time, he told me to use them for 5 nights in a row!! I just hate all the gunge that comes out the next day.

Nothing else doing pg wise. I have been eating such a load of junk the last few days. It was my birthday on Sunday, and too many people gave me chocolate and biscuits etc.

It doesn't help that ds doesn't like chocolate, so every morning, he breaks his advent choc in half and gives a bit each to me and dh. It seems to give me a taste for it, then I have trouble stopping! This is why I normally have none of that stuff in the house - ever.

fiziwizzle · 08/12/2009 11:29

I'm with you on normally having no chocolate in the house mawbroon! Far too dangerous. It was my birthday recently too and EVERYONE gave me chocolate For once in my life I'm eating as much as I like, and loving it. And my DP sent me this link yesterday .

I've had terrible thrush for weeks too, but my doctor has seemed very reluctant to prescribe more than one pessary. I've had an antibacterial cream (even though it's a fungus ) and another cream my DP pointed out is used for athlete's foot. NICE. It did clear it up though... But I know it will be back soon enough. I eat tons of yoghurt, any other tips for avoiding it?

Thanks for the Terries comments all, it's really important to me that they dry quickly as we don't have a tumbler so I think that's made my mind up. Phew, one less decision to make.

Hope everyone has a good day.

mamaloco · 08/12/2009 12:42

Hi, welcome newcomers, nearly only 8 weeks to go!!!! god that baby has to come out soon [run around like a headless chicken]

fizzy for thrush, 100 % cotton pants only (boil them for washing), loose clothes, no panty liners, somebody told me to put live yogurt on my bits (never dared trying though), avoid eating bread/beer, yeasty and sugary thing (marmite also I guess)... also avoid bath (shower instead), avoid overcleaning (once a day should be enough, may twice when pregnant) no soap except normal one (old fashion ones, no perfume) certainly not antibacterial ones. hum no going down from your husband untill you have a long period of no thrush and if still "active" it is worth treating DP as well, if it is recurrent he might have it too.
That's all I remember for now (you can tell I had it a lot when younger, but fortunately that 'is not one of my pg thing)
For BH, I didn't have any first pregnancy for those who are worrying. This time they started before 20 weeks, they feel like your tummy goes rock hard and it molds itself around the baby (so funny shape), sometime they give me a urge to pee and they can be painful if baby decides to kick

OP posts:
AbsB · 08/12/2009 13:48

Hooray, I got an appointment with a MW next Wednesday morning!!! Thank * for that!!!
I was really starting to worry that DP would have to deliver this baby...
Thank you ktmincepie and woowa for the link to nappies...
Definitely not had braxton hicks yet... lots of somersaults and circus acts in there but not the hardening of the uterus you describe.
Ktpie, every time I see your name it makes me hungry for mincepies!!!
I have tried the yogurt up the twat thing for thrush and it's very soothing... although I would recommend plain .
Better get back to work, it's piling up and I've got numb bum from sitting so many hours at my computer...

fiziwizzle · 08/12/2009 15:28

Abs made me laugh out loud!!

Thanks mamaloco, at no going down from my DP until there's been a long thrush-free period. Maybe I'll keep that to myself and keep my fingers crossed...

Nikki87 · 08/12/2009 17:25

ktpie now u mention it, i've been feeling baby hiccip about 2/3times a day in the last week, i'm not too keen on it tho... makes me feel wierd cause its too much like a heartbeat, i think theres something wrong with my body, lol.
absb, that made me laugh sososo much!!!!
shiregirl, i'm glad your on the disposible nappie route, i thought i was going to be the only one on here using them,

raindroprhyme · 08/12/2009 19:04

The Nappy lady website is great for advice. Can't reccomend it enough also check out lollipop and see if you have alocal advisor they will come to your house and go through all the options with you and let you see and feel the products.

Shire girl wish i could claim to use real nappies for the eco credentials but was just really skint when DS2 was born so had no choice.

jardins · 08/12/2009 19:46

AbsB - thank you for giving me a wonderful fit of laughter re: the yoghurt up your twat! Fabulous. Keep the good work up.

chinook · 08/12/2009 19:53

I didn't have BH with dd either, but have been getting them this time since about 17 weeks. No hiccups this time though and had lots last time.

pyjamababe we have a Bugaboo Chameleon and I can't recommend it highly enough. It is so easy to steer, has lots of space underneath and is big enough for dd to fit in at nearly 4 yrs old. She also slept in the carry cot when she was first born so we never had to buy a moses basket. We still have her rear facing in it too as she much prefers this. Oh and it looks great and comes in lots of lovely colours too!

My bump has really grown in the last week and I stand like a pregnant lady now, doing that hands on the waist thing all the time. I am fairly uncomfortable for most of the day too. Just over 8 weeks left for me and I am definitely counting.....
