Im expecting my first baby, I live in Abergavenny.
Ive seen my midwife once when I was 3 weeks pregnant.
Ive had my 12 weeks scan and have my 20 week on the 31st march.
She never answers her phone or returns messages.
People have been saying I need to start booking classes but I dont know anything about them where when are they free etc?

Also need a mat1 form

I dont even know when I have to make an appointment with her after my 20week scan.

I feel abit on my own

Yes as KKQ says you should have really had a 16 week appointment.

You can't get your MATB1 until you're at least 20 weeks.

You could try ringing your local hospital maternity unit about the classes as it's usually run by the hospital.

You could also ask for the supervisor of midwives while you're on the phone to the hospital and tell her about the problems you're having contacting your midwife. Do you have the number for your community midwifery office (it's sometimes stuck on the front of your notes) if so keep ringing them til you get s response from her.

Hi nutty Happy birthday btw!!

I had my MATB1 at 3 weeks, you need it to prove u are pregnant and can't get your freebie gaviscon etc without it (at least u are not supposed to be able to)

Tell your midwife that you need it, she sounds as tho she isn't giving u the attention she should.

We have a numbers sheet which is bright orange. It has the number for the delivery suite etc, on there is a number for "medicom" If you have that one listed ring that one. It is the on call m/wifery no, and will get u throu to someone.

Hope some of this is helpful!!

KKQ - your mw is wrong. You get a medical exemption certificate that early (which gives you free prescriptions) but your MATB1 can't legally be given to you before 20 weeks.

Hi nutty - can't explain why then but I have it!!

Gave it too me early each time I guess as this no4.

Hum ho never mind!

During my 22 week appointment I managed to infuriate my midwife because:

a) I had not booked any NCT classes by that point and "now it will be very very very hard to find something available, because they are very, very, very popular...";

b) I said I prefered not to pay for NCT classes but take whatever classes were free through my midwifes' team; (apparently that's bad, she must be getting commission from the NCT classes for sure ; and

c) I mentioned the word 'birthplan', at which point she totally dismissed me as stupid because aparently "first you need to have your antenatal classes otherwise you'll have no idea what you're talking about".
Apparently, I cannot read magazines or books or search on the internet and my only source of good advice for my birthplan will be my midwife's antenatal class, 3 weeks before my due date.. nice...

So, Carlz1 don't feel like you're on your own... most of us are !

Carlz1 - hello, I just thought I would say hi - I am in very very early stages of pregnancy but live in Abergavenny too. It would be nice to get in touch perhaps?

Jayni · 13/04/2009 22:22

Hi Carlz1! I live near Abergavenny too, and it sounds like we may have the same midwife, as I know that she works in some clinics in Abergavenny!! I have had the same problems as you - she has given me very little info, and I can never get hold of her on her mobile (instead, I get an answerphone message which says that I cannot leave a message, but I can send a text!! ...so I send a text and then she gets back to me about 2 days later!!!) I am 32 weeks pregnant and saw her at 30 weeks. She booked my next appointment for when I am 35 weeks (even though my maternity notes say that I should be seeing her fortnightly)!! She has not discussed a birth plan or anything, and I am measuring small for dates, so I thought that she would want to monitor me more closely!! Like you, I feel a bit on my own! The antenatal classes (there are 3) run every Thursday for the first 3 Thursday's in the month, from 7-9pm, at Neville Hall. You need to book these though the hospital with a lady called Kerry. I hope this helps!! Let me know how you get on!! : )
