Good list Springy. MN broke just as I finished typing mine and can't be bothered to do it again, so I'll just pick Springy's apart and see if I can make that bag a bit lighter.

  • The Lansinoh is v. unlikely to be needed in first day or two. They don't really feed much straight away.
  • Make up - didn't occur to me. But then my birth pics are awful!
  • Baby wipes - they will get you to do the first nappy changes using cotton wool and cooled boiled water so leave the wet wipes at home (unless you want them for yourself) *Flip-flops will suffice, no need for slippers as well. *Book / magazine - optimistic. Reading drops down the priority list when you are wracked with contractions. And after baby is born you can just stare at him / her . *Mug / hot choc / tea bags etc. I didn't bother but it's personal choice. Tea trolleys seem to go round the wards quite a lot. *Fybogel - personal choice - but I hate it.

Som ethoughts of mine

*Paper pants (in a larger size than you think you are)
*Maternity pads - plenty - there was way more blood than I though there would be
*sterilising wipes in case your hospital is yucky

  • spare nightie (I bled all over the only one I had and felt embarrased going down the corridoor to the bathroom in it)
  • cartons of juice with straws. Gas & Air is very drying so the fluid really helps plus juice gives you energy and you can suck through the straw even if you are on your hands & knees or however you find yourself most comfortable.
  • cereal bars or snacks for after the birth. I missed breakfast on my ward and was a long wait until lunch.

lol at windows solving the world's problems
good list lulu, although I'd rather have normal pants

SpringySunshine · 09/03/2009 16:30

As I say, it's what I gleaned from lists ages ago & have picked up a lot since - I hadn't thought about the Lansinoh being unnecessary at that point, though. The baby wipes were meant for the post-natal toilet wiping, I think. I know there have been discussions here about spray bottles & stuff instead, though.

I'm taking cheap knickers instead of paper pants - I think I'll end up just throwing them away as if they are disposable anyway, but don't want to be rustling around the ward

tristaleejac · 09/03/2009 16:31

lulu did you not get the famous tea and toast after the birth?
I did, it was heavenly

SpringySunshine · 09/03/2009 16:32

Oh, & I don't remember the last time I wore make up I'll probably make a mini bit of an effort to look human for the photos though, once I have a chance. I know it's not important & won't be upset if I don't get around to it, but it'd be great to be able to show people the pictures without scaring them

SpringySunshine · 09/03/2009 16:33

I forgot the tea & toast debate! Now I'm going to have to lecture DH on how 'I will be having tea & toast after the birth, no matter what they say' again.

LuLuBai · 09/03/2009 16:34

Yeah - whatever pants you prefer. For some reason I really liked the paper ones If baby wipes are for you then you might want to look for unfragranced ones as you don't want anything that may make that area sting anymore than it already will. I find wet wipes quite useful for freshening hands and face too.

tristaleejac · 09/03/2009 16:35

springy even just a wee bit of powder and some mascara, just makes you feel that wee bit more normal. I remember my face was caked in freckles for a few days after having DS, supposedly just from pushing! Nobody warned me about that.

LuLuBai · 09/03/2009 16:37

I never got my tea and toast . Everyone had told me I would but it never materialised and I think I was too much in shock / knackered / busy staring at my baby to think to ask for it. All I got was one of those institutional mini-packets of biscuits (you either get 3 bourbons or 3 digestives or whatever - you know the thing) and they were very dry and uninspiring. I was ravenous though, so I did devour them, however unappetising.

tristaleejac · 09/03/2009 16:39

well everyone go right now and put that on your birth plans in huge capital letters. MUST HAVE TEA & TOAST STRAIGHT AFTER BIRTH

SpringySunshine · 09/03/2009 16:40

I know they have tea & toast making facilities there, because I had some when I stayed in last weekend. So they can't try & pull that one. It's even going on my birth plan & I've drilled it right into DH's head that it's not an optional extra. God damn it, there will be tea & toast. It's almost as important as pain relief.

LuLuBai · 09/03/2009 16:40

You got freckly tristaleejac? I've never heard of that. I was very anaemic and bizarrely pale. DD got jaundice and looked far more tanned and healthy than I did .

Actually she looked quite Asian. She had black hair and black eyes and quite golden skin. MIL did peer at her rather suspiciously (both DH and I are fair skinned and white).

tristaleejac · 09/03/2009 16:42

Nice one, an advert just fell out of local paper. Cafe in the town are now delivering cooked breakfasts on Sundays. That suits my lazy ass down to a tee. Yum, I want one now!

LuLuBai · 09/03/2009 16:43

Oooooh - cooked breakfast delivery. Where are you tristaleejac? Wanna come and live there. Do they bring Sunday papers too.

tristaleejac · 09/03/2009 16:44

Yeah I caught sight of my face in the mirror and was quite horrified. There were loads of freckles. I asked MW and she said it was from pushing and that they'd go away within days, which they did.
Wonder if anyone else has had this or is it just me?

tristaleejac · 09/03/2009 16:45

In Angus, scotland, they only charge 50p for delivery too. I think that's well worth it

tristaleejac · 09/03/2009 16:47

lol we already get sunday papers delivered but I bet the cafe would bring one if we asked!

SpringySunshine · 09/03/2009 16:48

at MIL's suspicions. I was genuinely relieved after our 3D scan that all of DH's family thought that LO looks so much like him - I was worried they'd be pulling faces & ordering DNA tests. I had no reason to think that they would (or they any reason to be suspicious!) but I was just really paranoid

& ooh, sounds lovely. I don't think we have any really nice local cafes I was researching local baby groups last night & am actually really looking forward to going to them & meeting people. My baby shall be a tool for my social life

LuLuBai · 09/03/2009 16:49

I get loads of little burst blood vessels when I'm pregnant - all over my face and chest. So I look plenty blotchy enough without adding extra freckles in there.

SpringySunshine · 09/03/2009 16:51

Not freckles, & certainly not from pushing, but at various points in the pregnancy I've had strange freckle-like spots of pigmentation around my eyes & across my nose. A sort of reddish colour. DH (who used to be a trainee optician & has therefore seen lots of people's eyes at close range) says it's really common - but it's not mentioned anywhere else I've seen, either on MN or in various books!

mathsmummy27 · 09/03/2009 16:59

sooooo sleepy

whose stupid idea was it to work until 38 weeks? oh yes...mine. whilst skipping around smugly telling everyone at work what an easy pregnancy I've had. grrr. now I can't even moan at work....

But on the plus side, it stops me fiddling about with my cervix..and passes the time (which seems to be going particularly slowly atm)

I can't reach my cervix. Tried a few days ago. Mine is no fun

LuLuBai · 09/03/2009 17:03

LOL at keeping mathsmummy too busy to fiddle with her cervix.

I haven't venturied anywhere near mine. And despite best intentions haven't started perineal massage either. Drinking plenty of RLT though.

LuLuBai · 09/03/2009 17:04

Nutty is extremely quiet today. Anyone know if she is OK? She may have over-exerted herself at her DD's birthday yesterday.
