Nutty, it is a big wide white thing with a foam pad in the lumbar bit of the back and three velcro straps that come round to the front. The other main contender was a narrower black thing like a bit of seat belt with bits you tug to tighten the sides.

Witness my technical vocabulary! You can see how clued up I am.

Springy, that sounds nightmarish and deeply frustrating. I hope the DH is giving you lots of sympathy and stroking.

I am not doing much now... feeling very achey and not great at concentrating so I think I will take a 15 minute power nap (or at least lie down to unspasm a bit) and then kill off whatever bits of work I can between then and 6. The creature is seething and the bump is achey and burny and stretchy... I think I will curl up and see if I can soothe this beast with quietness.

SpringySunshine · 02/03/2009 16:00

They've not given me anything except for iron tablets (still a mystery), but told me to speak to my MW tomorrow (I had an appointment anyway) after a couple of days at home to see what was necessary. The more I think about it the more neglected I feel (& I felt pretty neglected in the first place). The pain isn't unbearable - it's more annoying than anything at this point. I think if I ran around a bit (haha, what a joke) I'd be back up to the horrible levels that I was before, but just pottering around doing the bare minimum triggers pain that I can still concentrate through, although I am very aware of it. If I don't move at all for quite a while, they become much less frequent (every 15 - 20 minutes) & only uncomfortable instead of painful.

lauren61 · 02/03/2009 16:01

springy thats what they told me too, just tightenings.. bloody hurts tho, they gave me codeine, knocked me straight out saturday night

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 02/03/2009 16:02

Hey Lauren ((hugs)) sorry for the pain and the smear (though i have to have one in march, they are very important, please dont let this one put you off, being pg and having one is probably not the best as your all uncomfy and changing down below!!)

would you like to join our buddy system?

Juw, my best bet (my DH is a student as well) is to not take an official leave of absence & still claim the student financial support. In the long term it will cost us an extra year of student debt, but in the short term I think it's the only way we'll survive financially. I could get some of my fees back in theory, but it's just not worth it on balance. I'm afraid it's a case of playing the system a little bit

Lauren, I've had 2 smears this pregnancy (& never before, being only 20) & I was actually surprised that people have such a problem with going, considering the risks of not! I agree that they're very uncomfortable, but then mine didn't make me bleed, I don't think - obviously your cervix is more ripe than mine If it helps, I think everything's more delicate down there at the moment & it shouldn't be so bad when you're not pregnant Please don't avoid smears in future!

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 02/03/2009 16:05

Springy & lauren can you get your docs to do home visits to get some codine for the pain??

OP posts:
SpringySunshine · 02/03/2009 16:05

Ginger, I hope you can get some sleep xx Don't stress too much about getting work done - they'll understand & you can always exaggerate how long you spent at the hospital, too. Make sure you get yourself feeling a bit better before you worry about anything else.

SpringySunshine · 02/03/2009 16:07

I don't think I really need it at the moment, Nutty. I'm not exactly in league with you & Boff. My main frustration is that it's completely minimal movement required to set it off again. I'm okay with paracetamol & not moving in terms of pain relief at the moment (Saturday night was a different story!) - it's more the mental aspect of not being able to do anything that's getting to me. You know what that's like, I know - & over a much greater period of time xx I'll settle down to it, I'm sure. I just hoped it'd be magically fixed by now after a good couple of days of rest. Meh. We are near the end whatever happens.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 02/03/2009 16:09

Ginger - ah sounds like he was fitting you for a support belt. Hope the rest helps and you feel a bit more comfotable xx

Springy - yup not long now

ripe haha!! =p yeah whats the buddy system??

ive got midwife in like 2 week so i mite ring to make an appt before then, see what she says. i was probably just being a wuss, my pain threshold is practically zero, i am so scared of having this baby now i cant even tell you, they did a test on me though, with the horrible painful metal grinding crank and a loooong stick which says i definately wont go into labour in the next 2 weeks, so that was a relief but still, hes gonna come out one day soon, im sheeeting it

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 02/03/2009 16:11

LOL as long as BB stops sprinkling that cervix dust around after shes popped

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 02/03/2009 16:16

Lauren ((hugs)) it will be fine xx I promise xx it's only one day this whole birth thing, and you pretty much forget about the whole experience after a while. and if your going to hospital they have lots of lovely drugs to take the pain away

OP posts:
SmuttyNuttyTaff · 02/03/2009 16:19

Lauren - just so you can let your buddy know if/when you are in labour and give breif details of baby arriving safely, weight, name etc then your buddy can post on mn for you.

and you do the same for your buddy

Hey girlies, got sent home from work today lots of so-called 'tightenings' and a serious amount of pressure down below...

Have been resting and now just have period pains, down legs and back. Hot water bottle is helping. So who wants to know about their own cervix eh??

lauren61 · 02/03/2009 16:19

i know but i really really wanted to do it on my own, and be all relaxed and natural but now i feel like a big fat failure i bought kicked doctors teeth out when she tried to put thingy up me !

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 02/03/2009 16:20

BB - you are mad driving 6 miles just for RLT!! cant you order it from the net?

OP posts:
lauren61 · 02/03/2009 16:21

im so glad ive come on here where i can see you lot are going thru same stuff as me, not cus its painful and uncomfy, but i was worried something was wrong, my mum sed "i dont remember gettin pains like that at 33week" thought id done sumthing to upset my little one!

LuLuBai · 02/03/2009 16:22

Oh Springy - sounds grim. Just do what you can.

At least you are missing seminars for a valid reason. There will be plenty of students skipping them to go down the pub or whatever.

BabyBolat · 02/03/2009 16:24

I meant had not have - have it with me here now and it is no the nicest thing in the world!!! I can but tis only £1 and P&P is about £4 so I refuse!

Come on MM tell us all about how to check our cervix!!

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 02/03/2009 16:25

Mathsmummy ((Hugs)) xxx glad the hot water bottle is helping xx yep fill me in (pun intended)

Lauren - really dont worry, you are not a failiure and however this baby comes out is a good thing, you will have still done it!! and thats an achievement in itself , dont feel like you have failed at all, sometimes things are out of our control and with birth its no different, you may not need drugs at all and manage to do it naturally, its wait and see really but the main thing is that you are comfortable with what you do. do go through your birth plan with your MW she will be able to help xx

OP posts:
SpringySunshine · 02/03/2009 16:26

lauren, when the baby comes it'll build up more slowly & you'll have loads of options about pain relief & things. Birth is a far more natural process than speculums & swabs anyway.

mathsmummy, I'm dying to know about my cervix!
