I am permanently tired at the moment - yesterday I slept for 4 hours in the afternoon and I hate sleeping in the day!!!

Oh OK, I never read books after watching the film as they always disappoint whereas I think you kind of expect films to 'adapt' books so not quite be true to point!

You should read 'The notebook' although not when you are emotional or hormonal - I burst in to tears once reading it on the train!

Re cucumber debate - those pointy/nobbly ends would definitely open up your cervix!! (don't even think about it Springy!!!)

Juwesm · 02/03/2009 12:55

Nutty re: His Dark Materials. Have only read Northern Lights so far, but I suspect you need to read it to get the overall background for the rest of the series. This is the trouble with seeing the film before reading the book. You then have ideas in your head about what people look like, what's going to happen etc, and then when it turns out they changed things for the film version, the book doesn't seem right.

Actually, think I have listened to the whole series as unabridged audiobook (DH loves them). If I recall correctly, first book okay, second book completely different style at first, hence difficulty getting into it (also, all three books in one volume - v.heavy for weak wrists), third book strange and rather religious. I will have to relisten now (nothing better to do - checked on iTunes, total length of series = 35 hours).

See, not all smut. Popular children's literature too.

Bleuravin · 02/03/2009 13:07

I was sleeping nicely but now the boiler man has come to fix things in the airing cupboard.. so I thought I'd post again while I'm awake.
Are we talking smut again? (cucumbers)Can't leave you girls alone...
Anything else of interest happen since I've been gone?

Bleuravin · 02/03/2009 13:09

I've read all the Dark Materials books; they are very different to the movie; taken separately they are both entertaining, though I perfer the complexity of the books to the movie.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 02/03/2009 13:09

my problem is though that it is exactly the same as the book (the film, i saw it a year or so ago) there seems to be no deviation or little bits you get excited about as its not the same iyswim even down to the dialogue. which i find really odd?!?

whereas with say harry potter, there are huge gaps in the film and the books are far superior to the film in depth and content.

just me being picky though i think. will keep reading and see how it goes, if not i may just jump to book 2.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 02/03/2009 13:12

Bleu - do you really find that the books have complexity though???

OP posts:
Bleuravin · 02/03/2009 13:13

What happened to Springy?! Has she been poorly?! Has she had a baby? Surely not if you've still made reference to her cervix...OH I've missed too much I can tell! Eek... I'll have to go back and try to catch up quick...

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 02/03/2009 13:14

BB- i hate sleeping in the day too, but afternoon naps are becoming more and more irresistable

will order Notebook from amazon.

Bleuravin · 02/03/2009 13:15

They are complex from the standpoint of good vs evil...and it gets more complex as that plot develops through the series, but they are written rather simply otherwise... but they're kids books so...

Bleuravin · 02/03/2009 13:22

I'm reading backwards through the posts to try and catach up with the most recent posts first...
Nutty I just found your orginal post abt the pullman books... I have to say to a point I agree it does seem rather similar to the movie (I read the books first) but the movie ending is a bit different to the way the first book ends... I have to say that I personally find both Rowling and Pullman lacking on certain levels...but they were entertaining too and overall I prefer the Potter books to Lyra's stories in the end because in part the movies are better than the Compass movie.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 02/03/2009 13:23

so do you think i could just skip The Northern Lights without too much of a problem? and get on with the knife one?

the simple writing may have alot to do with it tbh Narnia Chronicles/ Harry Potter/ Lord of the rings/ Through the looking glass etc are all childrens books but seem perfectly worded for both adult and child (more gripping in a sense) whereas these seem a little too sipmple if that makes sense?!? i'm expecting too much i think

Bleuravin · 02/03/2009 13:25

Welcome Juwesm... I see you've found out how smutty we can all be It's like having a virtual coffee club of gossip and sex here Great fun really.

Bleuravin · 02/03/2009 13:28

I hate to advocate skipping books...but I do think you could...or skip to the last couple of chapters and see how the ending varies. Like I said, the good vs evil and the religion bit in the books gets more complex and unique as the story progresses through the book and through the series.

Bleuravin · 02/03/2009 13:31

Thanks BB for the summary post! I just read it. Springy in labor already! Scary. But the baby didn't come!? Hopefully she's home and relaxing now.
I kept forgetting to ask if Bardarelly had her triplets, but tomorrow, good I didn't miss their birth

Bleuravin · 02/03/2009 13:32

Haven't started the perineal massage here either, but looking into it starting this week...not exactly sure how it's supposed to go either, but figured we could use it for foreplay perhaps...

Juwesm · 02/03/2009 13:33

Dark Materials series does get more complex.
Have read lots of criticism of Rowling's writing being too simple, too basic, lacking in style etc, by people who don't seem to acknowledge that they are written for children. Re-reading Narnia books after twenty years or so, they do seem very child-like compared with modern kids-lit, but that must be a difference in the time period. Kids back then weren't so scarily sophisticated. Potter/ Narnia/ LotR/ Materials all very similar on the good vs evil theme. This must be what I most need to worry about teaching the LO! Artemis Fowl - there's a good kids series. Not too heavy on morality, lots of action, good old Boys Own stuff!

Juwesm · 02/03/2009 13:36

Bleu - Brilliant article about perineal massage from DP PoV given to us at NCT class. More something to do whilst completing a crossword than foreplay! Will try and find an e-version of it. Quite entertaining.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 02/03/2009 13:41

ok will start towards the end of it then.....i still think he's a bit of a knob for having a pop at Rowling though

Books are supposed to be different from the films ....tis what i love in a way. the shouting at the telly due to the differences and telling dh the stuff that fills the gaps (he does not do books ). Getting in a huff then re-reading the book cos the film wasn't good enough

In this case though The Golden Compass is bang on near identical to The Northern lights and has ruined it entirely as a book as its taken the imagination side of it away, for me anyway lol

the only book adaptation that is perfect in every way is pride & predjudice (the BBC version) IMO
