Welcome new joiners.
Chickenbalti, I sympathise with the shoe thing, I got a few streets away in the car yesterday before realising I had my slippers on and had to turn around and go home again.

i am worried about size of bump too- seems to be on hold fro the last few weeks. and no movements yet - at least nothing i recognise as a full on kick. have bad mother fears for not being able to recognise own baby's movements!

have been looking at possible prams - has anyone else? it is V confusing, i seem to find one that i like (baby facing me, can last for years, light and fit into boot of car) but then look at reviews and things like: has anyone else found that this pram injures their babies legs??!!

want magic answer - does anyone have it?

hope you all happy and well

LuLuBai · 04/11/2008 08:33

Oh Chickenbalti you've made my morning. I'm still chuckling about your boots. Brilliant!

As for rocket, avocado and lime. Mmmm - that sounds yummy. I'm thinking maybe I should have a second breakfast.... (although only have a lemon which isn't quite the same).

When I was pg with DD I had to eat spinach, chick-pea and feta cheese salad every single day for the first trimester. Then in the second and third trimester I discovered a rather fattening appetite for cheesecake and chocolate brownies.

BabyBolat - brilliant about the kicks.

BabyBolat · 04/11/2008 10:04

Morning everyone

As so sleepy today - did that awful half sleep thing on the train where you wake up dribbling on yourself!! (nice!)

How is everyone this morning? Chickenbalti - did you manage to find a matching pair of shoes?

Mizannie - I felt exactly the same as you (and also thought if something happened it was punishment for hating being pregnant in the early stages!)

I have also struggles with prams - have pretty much kitted out the whole nursery in my mind so after Xmas I can go ad get that but I am yet to find one pram that I like - i feel like everything is either a bit too traditional (and would never get in my narrow hallway) or some sort of all-terrain cross country robotic thing! I definitely want to try and get one of those all in one things but just can't seem to see one I like anywhere.

poop!

LuLuBai · 04/11/2008 11:37

BabyBolat - for prams I would really recommend going to a baby show if you can. It gives you the chance to get your hands on loads of different prams in one place. I braved the Earl's Court Exhibition Centre when I was pg with DD to look for a pram, re-usable nappies and a sling. I had to stay focussed and not allow myself to be distracted by adorable baby booties, 'educational' toys, maternity fashion shows etc etc etc. But I came out of it with a sling and the nappies and a much clearer idea of what sort of pram I wanted. I then found it cheaply online (although worth paying a tiny bit for one which comes with a year's guarantee - no probs with mine, but heard some horror stories).

BabyBolat · 04/11/2008 11:50

I went to the BabyShow at Earls Court last month and it just freaked me out (all though did get a nice sling thing). I am definitely using re-useable nappies but got very confused as to all the different kinds - must look in to that in more detail - out of interest how many do you think you need as I keep looking at these packs of 40 or 50 and they are about £300-£400!

LuLuBai · 04/11/2008 11:56

I've got 15 size 1s and 15 size 2s and so far have just about coped, although there have been phases of runny tummy where I have supplemented with the occasional biodegradable disposable. I do have to be organised and get a load on every other day without fail or they aren't dry in time (don't have a tumble drier to fall back on any more).

Anyway - there is always more of this sort of chat on the nappy threads for those nappy enthusiasts .

OddEyes · 04/11/2008 12:38

be careful with the reusable nappies not to buy too many before baby arrives, just get a trail pack and they are so easy to order and have delivered afterwards.
Just that I was about to invest before ds arrived but didn't and am so glad I didn't as he arrived weighing 10.4 lb which would have been out of the first size straight away and out of the seecond size within a 4 months making it definatly not worth it if I had of invested (although some nappies have huge ranges of weights) also I was so ill afterwards so glad I hadn't pressured myself into having to use them.
I bought some 'nature nappies' to start with, biodegradable, gives you time to cope with those first few weeks (for me months) of absolute chaos, without having to wash and dry nappies and gives you time to work out how many and which size would be most appropriate to invest in.

LuLuBai · 04/11/2008 13:00

Thing is you do need more nappies when they are little as in the (very) early days you are changing every couple of hours. DD was 9.1 and was in size 1 for quite a long time. With my nappies it is the wraps that they grow out of more quickly. And all the old nappies are still in v. good nick waiting in the airing cupboard for DC2.

Ooooh - I love my nappies! May have to go and lurk around the nappy threads for a while. Even though I have PLENTY of nappies, I wouldn't mind a couple of new ones for the next baby as there is a lovely soft bamboo type I'm keen to try.

OddEyes · 04/11/2008 13:03

going to join you lulubai in the nappy threads...

DungunGirl · 04/11/2008 13:07

mizzanine

Size of bump anxiaty here too!!!!

At week 14 I literally ballooned...and since then I feel like I have not changed at all ! I am week 17 going on 18!

Anyone else been having weird paranoid thoughts that baby isn't going to be there or isn't going to be ok for 20 week scan?

I shouldn't worry myself...but after miscarriage in March I keep getting these doubts and keep worrying.

Swaliswan · 04/11/2008 13:18

BabyBolat I have to agree with OddEyes and say only buy trial packs of reusables before LO is born. DD was early so I thought that I would get loads of use out of the size one nappies, but she had grown out of them at four months old (actual age, less than 3 months corrected age) because she has such chunky thighs! I gave up on reusables at this point because she is also extremely long in the body and I just couldn't get clothes to fit her without spending a fortune on special ones. I'm tempted to try the reusables again this time, but I'll be far more sensible and avoid the same costly mistake that I made last time.

As for prams, there are two main bits of advice that I would give....Always try pushing the pram with some weight in it (preferably borrow a toddler for maximum effect!) as some push and steer beautifully until you put a baby in it. The other thing I would say is be very careful when trying to buy an all-in-one type of pram. I'm sure that there must be some good ones out there and the idea is great for saving space etc but I would describe them as a jack of all trades but a master of none. None of my friends liked their all in one pushchairs because they did everything but did it all badly! I ended up selling my silvercross 3D (same as a M&P all-in-one) because it was so terrible to push. I ended up buying a rather bulky but extremely fabulous Jane slalom pro. It is like pushing air and the disc brake is great when pushing the pushchair downhill (even very small hills). I'm not saying buy a Slalom Pro, but please consider all types of pushchair and try them with some weight in. Also consider how much easier it is to push with just one hand when looking at pushchair handles and have a serious think about when you want to move over to a buggy as you need to think about how long you need the pushchair for. DH and I have settled on a P&T as DD will only by max 23 months when LO is born. I'm not looking forward to giving up my Jane but in this case the P&T does seem to be our best option.

Right, lecture over. I'm going back to Loose Women now and waiting for my midwife appointment this afternoon...

LuLuBai · 04/11/2008 13:20

Tis odd. My bump hasn't grown in the last week either. I got into a bikini yesterday and looked less pregnant than in jeans (ie I looked just a bit fat).

I seem to remember really ballooning around 20 weeks with DD.

Anyway - talking of tummies it's lunch time and DD has just woken up ravenous. got to go.

mizzannie · 04/11/2008 13:50

the bump thing - apparently babies have growth spurts like kids do, this may just be a dormant patch. but so want 20 week scan. and to find out sex too!

PRAM NEWS i just tried out a emma junga modial pram - has anyone else? they are very pretty and make you feel like mary poppins. but would not fit in hall/car/shops/anywhere so sadly not for me.

also pushed the bugaboo bee around - quite whizzy and seems strong but very difficult for poor pregnant brain to work out how to collapse it.

one last question for you ladies... lovely in laws have given us cot and mattress but friend said you should never use second hand mattress, linked with cot death... anyone else heard this?

BabyBolat · 04/11/2008 14:13

Thanks OddEyes / LuLu will definitely not invest too much then! (also saves us a bit of money which is bonus!)

I am going to ignore the pram issue until after Christmas!!!

Mizzannie, I think it depends on how old they are (I think) but I will definitely be purchasing a new one just in case!!

LuLuBai · 04/11/2008 14:27

I have to second Swaliswan. Am also the proud owner of a Jane Slalom Pro. Brilliant. Turns on a nine-pin (handy for browsing the maternity rails at H&M & Zara) and is robust enough for some of my epic cross country walks across Richmond Park and DH's (occasional) runs. I especially loved the Jane lie-flat car seat which DD always slept in like a dream.

Problem now is that I want next DC to be in lie down car seat as well as fitting in DDs toddler maxicosi. I think we need a bigger car....

(as for pram - I do like the P&T and would like one but DH says 'no'. Anyway it has a lousy brake so I'm going to get a buggy board for the old Jane and see how I get on, always taking a sling so that DD can get in the pram if need be.)

Swaliswan · 04/11/2008 14:29

Mizzannie you are supposed to buy a new mattress for each child. I will buy DC2 a new cot mattress but the old moses basket mattress is in really good condition and was hardly used so DC2 can use that.

Swaliswan · 04/11/2008 14:33

I agree about the P&T lousy brake, Lulu but I don't know how I will manage to walk 2+ miles into and then another 2+ miles back out of town with DD on a buggy board or DC2 in a sling. DH wants to buy a P&T now but I can't bear to part with my Slalom Pro.

Bubbaluv · 04/11/2008 14:45

Swaliswan , Can I ask, as a Jane fan, what made you choose P&T over a Jane Powertwin? That's my shortlist, but have tried neither yet and interested in your experience.

Bubbaluv · 04/11/2008 14:46

No way am I buying a new mattress for DC2 - I spent £££ the first time, so it will be seeing out my brrod however large it may grow!

LuLuBai · 04/11/2008 14:52

mmm - my walk into town is about the same distance. Not really sure how it will work but we'll see how it goes.

On the mattress front - I know I am supposed to get a new one, but I've never understood why. I have always suspected that it was propaganda by the purveyors of baby mattreses. DD had my nephew's old mattress (which I washed several times in the bathtub and thoroughly aired first) but she slept in our bed for most of the first 6 months anyway.

Swaliswan · 04/11/2008 14:53

I put DD in the front seat of a powertwin and two things put me off. Firstly, she was already really cramped and looked like she had outgrown it. Secondly, I tried to 'lift' the front of the pushchair like you would if you were going up a kerb and I couldn't make the thing budge off of the floor! Both of these problems are only going to get worse.

As for the mattress - there is no way that I'm going to inflict DD's sick-stained mattress on DC2. It hasn't washed out yet and I don't think that the stain ever will

Cosmogirl · 04/11/2008 15:04

Hi ladies,

Haven't checked in for ages but have been lurking. Hope everyone is doing ok and sickness has passed for most.

I am still quite nauseous but only threw up once during week 18, so progress! I really hope the nausea clears up completely, though I know it may not.

Started feeling movements at 16 weeks, but has progressed to little kicks - or prods. Like Babybolat, I nearly cried when I first felt the kick - it is so exciting and I get a huge grin on my face. It makes those rough weeks seem worthwhile.

Next milestone is scan two weeks Friday.

Cosmo 19 wks

BabyBolat · 04/11/2008 15:15

Hey Cosmo - glad your feeling a bit better! It is really exciting I keep prodding my tummy trying to get it to do it again but it wont!
