Hi All,

Beans and Verso so sorry to hear about your horrible train journey's. Beans def send a letter of complaint!!

Katie sorry to hear you have GD hope you get is well controlled asap.

ZJ I had my 28 week appointment today with MW all was well but she said that she thought the baby was feet down (wasn't sure) but this would not be a prob until about 34 weeks. The position of the baby at 34 weeks is indicative of how they will be for labour but still will be time to try to get them to move. At 28 weeks baby still has lots of room and can move easily so please don't stress.

Ouch Arti that sounds very painful. Speak to your doc or MW and get a workstation assessment at work they must be able to provide a more comfy chair or cushion or something. Please do not suffer if you don't have too.

At my 28 week appointment today I was told I was measuring 29cm. Not too sure what this means in real terms. Is that big? Small? I am terrified of having a monster baby esp as I'm only 5ft2 and relatively small framed.

zoejeanne · 07/10/2008 13:05

emma I think your measurement is supposed to match the weeks, so you sound about right. I was 28cm yesterday and was told that was about spot on, so you sound fine too. Thanks for the advice on the positioning (and to jj for the link), I'll just move it from my mind for a few more weeks.

Beans33 · 07/10/2008 16:15

ohhhhhmmm - off to yoga after work. Must try to be more involved in it!

Have a fun evening everyone.

xx

majormoo · 07/10/2008 18:22

Beans that is awful of the train manager.I used to commute to work in London from Brighton, and with the line into London Bridge, you got your ticket upgraded to first class for free in pregnancy. That was 5 years ago though.

I also feel like I wish I was nearer to my family-. DH's family are great and very near to us, but wish I could see a bit more of my own family over the next couple of months.Especially as my sister has just had her baby. They are doing great by the way-baby feeding really well and when the stitches came out from my sister's c-section, the midwife said she doubts there will be any scar at all it was so well done. So after a rough start, they are really happy.

Hotmama I haven't prepared anything yet either.Have loads of stuff in the loft will need to get down sometime soon.

emmanbump I don't think the odd cm here or there matters really. I measured 27cm at 28 weeks, and the midwife said it was fine.

arti sounds really uncomfortable but have not had anything similar myself

Am moaning I am more tired than usual today as DD had a bug last night and was vomiting til 3am. Plus have had to entertain them all day indoors which made it feel like a loooong day.

pixsix · 07/10/2008 19:01

Beans, the more I think about your experience on the train the more angry I am for you. It was absolutely ridiculous of the man to refuse to let you in to 1st class and I'm not at all surprised that you got tearful. I recently had to stand for about half an hour on a bus and actually thought I might be going in to labour as it felt like the baby's head was really pressing down in to my pelvis and you were standing for 3 times as long as me. You must have been exhausted and in agony after standing for so long. I'm really tempted to write a letter to Virgin myself complaining at how they treated you. I'm really on your behalf. Please let us know what they say in reply to your letter.

Reban if you are around, I've been thinking of you and hoping the scan went well today.

Veggie massive congrats on the 100% assessment, that's amazing!

Arti I feel like I can feel the baby's head in my pelvis pressing down when I sit for a long time with my back straight. I also think i know what you mean about feeling bruised, although it does not feel as bad for me as it sounds for you. I hope the midwife can advise.

I have finally ordered some baby stuff. I took dh's credit card on a big online shopping spree on the weekend and ordered pretty much everything I think we'll need for the birth and the baby except for the pushchair, a changing mat and a baby monitor. I want to wait until we move home to get those.

The first of my orders arrived today - the hugabub, the car seat, a plastic sheet for our bed and some cheap dark towels for me to take to the hospital. I am completely paranoid about going in to labour early and having to explain to the landlord that my waters have ruined his mattress so I think I'm going to put the sheet on the bed pretty soon!

Finally, I'm not sure if anyone else would be as clueless as me but after unpacking the car seat I phoned John Lewis in irritation to say that it had come with no instructions. Only later did I realise that there is a little compartment at the back with the instructions in . I'm sure none of you are as stupid as me but just in case, look for that little compartment if you order the maxi-cosi car seat!

Right, off to try and figure out how the hugabub works. Any suggestions for what I could use to test it in the absence of a baby (or a cat) to put in it?

babybear77 · 07/10/2008 19:07

arti sounds very much like SPD to me. See if you can get a referral to an obstetric ohysio they'll be able to show you some exercises and possibly supply you with something to support your bump. Getting in and out of a car swing your legs out a la swiss finishing school - both legs together rather than one at a time. sitting on a carrier bag can help you slide out of the car a bit easier.
wrt - docs being present in the labour suite...generally there will be a medic present on the labour suite usually a jnr with snr cover. of course if the proverbial is hitting the fan they may be tied up in theatre but someone will always be close by....i know this because i was that jnr and I imagine most hospitals work in a similar way - unless your delivering at a midwife led unit of course. hope this helps.

babybear77 · 07/10/2008 19:12

sorry some of my typing appears a bit dyslexic.

Veggiemummy · 07/10/2008 20:18

i have to admit the assessment is very easy it's just 4 questions based on the chapters that we study in the course. But was chuffed cos i didn't really do much reading for it. I think they make the 1st one easy.

I won't be able to make the meet up on the 17th as i have a breastfeeding helper course thing in Wolverhampton until 2.30 and i wanted to come down while DH is in australia but think i will just take it easy up here.

I had yoga today and it was quite and intense session & we did a really deep relaxation at the end and i as close to sleep as you can be while being awake it was so nice but i have been shattered the rest of the afternoon.

Hi all,

Afraid I've not posted in ages - just been really struggling to keep on top of work and just about to leave to head home tonight. All is well anyway, had the dread GTT last week and so far no news is good news (Katie - sorry to hear about your result, but do hope they keep it under control. Lots of diabetics in my family and it does seem managable if they look after you properly). Policy re growth scans seems very erratic! I have one later this week (28 weeks) but have no idea why they think I need one as am not measuring large and DD was entirely average sized!?

I am another one that has absolutely not got my act together about getting organised, but so far no nesting kicking in and I kind of figure it will happen eventually?

Glad that those of you who have had a bit of a break (Lady T, Beans) have had a good time, but sorry for all those suffering dreadful journeys.

Oh and Pixsix - I did the same thing with the Maxicosi. How would you know to look in the secret compartment until you had read the instructions??? Makes no sense to me...

I know I have completely failed to do the epic catch up a la Bisou and LadyT, but will try and keep up a bit better!

pixsix · 07/10/2008 21:15

Phew Invisible, I'm glad it's not just me!

Verso · 07/10/2008 21:17

Beans I am so at your Virgin trains story. That's simply appalling! I hope you get some free travel vouchers and a nice grovelling reply.

artichokes the pain you describe sounds very like SPD to me too. I had it with DD. This pg I've only had mild twinges (so far anyway). I've been religious about wearing flat shoes, not carrying anything heavy, and keeping my legs parallel where possible (ie stepping into the shower forwards not side-stepping in etc). It definitely feels like you've been kicked in the crotch when it comes on - mine is worse in the morning when I get out of bed (I find a pillow between the legs - which does wonders for aching hips - actually makes the SPD pain much much worse - so I just make do with sore hips!) I hope you get some sensible help and advice from your m/w.

I am afraid I'm too tired to do a full round up to everyone. Work is INSANE at the moment and I am exhausted tonight. It's a good thing I love my job (most of the time) - but I am starting to count down the days...

Anyone else freaked out by HOW SOON THE BABIES WILL BE HERE?! I think it's because the movements are so definite now that it's really hit me that soon DD's brother or sister will be here. Crikey.

Kimberly1979 · 07/10/2008 21:51

Beans I can't believe that about the train! It's one thing when rude people won't let you sit down. But an employee of the company and there are empty seats?!? That's just ridiculous! I'm so sorry you had to stand up for so long!

Also feeling a little disorganized. Usually I'm on the ball with these types of things. I think part of it has been me not being able to make up my mind or worrying I'll get the wrong thing. Also... we've been holding off on buying a lot of small things with the hopes well get some of it as gifts. Thankfully someone bought the buggy we wanted and we got a crib for free. So I guess that's a start right?? Our baby bedding should be here from the States this week (hopefully). Maybe once that gets here I'll start feeling like things are moving along.

Baby Reid seems to be wide awake at the moment. I think he might be a ninja with the way he kicks sometimes!

mibbes · 07/10/2008 22:34

LT LOL at yummy kohl ! are you on pregaday ? I was prescribed them 2 weeks ago, no major side effects yet. Am fine now thanks

Beans I totally know where you're coming from with your meltdown - I keep realising there are things I'll never do again without a baby and feeling sad, but am sure when I see the wee squishy face I'll not care ! Oh and definitely send the letter - what a miserable git making you stand

pixsix thanks for the maxicosi toptip - sounds like the kind of thing I'd do too Where did you get the plastic sheet ?

Veggie well done on assessment !

Verso YES am also very at how soon these babies will start arriving, wonder who will be first ?...

Veggiemummy · 07/10/2008 23:06

again i highly recommend these for bed / cot /floor protection they are completely protecting without being plasticy and noisey. They have a layer of some sort of occlusive plastic sheet which is completely covered nice soft stuff. Still using the 2 we bought for DS before his birth 3 years on to protect his bed from the occasional very wet night nappy. Has been well used.

anyone else having PGP pelvic girdle pain shooting pain in right buttock and impossible to walk -- actually squealed out loud in street today ... everyone keeps telling me i 'should' be resting ... yeah try that when you have a 2 yo

Kimberly1979 · 08/10/2008 00:02

donny I've been having symptoms of PGP but nothing has been diagnosed. I've found that icing it tends to help. I usually stick a bag of frozen peas on the side that hurts and leave it there for about 20 minutes until it's good and numb. If I'm having a really painful day I'll ice it twice, once in the morning and in the evening. babycentre.co.uk also has a bunch of things you can try and do to help. Check out "this link"

pixsix · 08/10/2008 08:02

Mibbes I got the sheet from John Lewis. I haven't deployed it yet but it's covered in flannelette like the one that veggie linked to so hopefully won't be too noisy or sweaty! It was a bit pricey but I'm expecting to be able to use it while I'm bf-ing too (fingers crossed I'll be able to) to protect our mattress from leaks and it's fitted so it won't matter which side of the bed I sleep on which is good as dh always changes his mind about which side he wants!

I hope everyone has good days. The sun is shining here which is a much nicer start to the day than yesterday.

lowrib · 08/10/2008 08:26

Morning everyone!

No one told me sleep deprivation starts before birth!! (Up till 1.30, then awake from 6.30. Can't sleep grr!!)

Oh well, at least it gives me a chance to catch up with mumsnet

When do you all plan to take your maternity leave - or when did you take it 1st time round? I had planned on 4 weeks before the due date, but I've just moved it to 5 because I'm feeling knackered a lot of the time, there's still so much to do, and work seems less important by the day!

artichokes, donnylass and anyone else with PGP (SPD / pelvic pain) do talk to your midwife. I've got PGP, and the midwife referred me to a group physio class at my hospital (Homerton) where they taught us exercises and gave specific advice based on our symptoms. One-to-one physio sessions were offered too. I found it really useful.

The exercises are simple Pilates-based things, and also pelvic floor exercises. Our ligaments are being affected by the hormone relaxin, and are more prone to being strained. The physio was coming from the point of view that we can't change this, but we can affect the muscles, and the exercises are designed to support / strengthen / flex the muscles in the pelvis.
They pointed out that the strain on the pelvis is only going to get worse, so it's a good idea to work on building up the muscle strength as soon as possible.

For me, it hurts when I walk (or turn over in bed etc). I was advised not to walk as much as possible. Even though I mentioned that walking is pretty much the only exercise I'm getting right now, they said stop it! So I'm being really lazy, and I'm getting the bus everywhere, even if it's just one stop.

They also gave those pregnancy belt support things to those worst affected.

Effie I'm with you on the Gavisgon - yuck!

Verso Yup, I'm getting a bit freaked out with how close it's getting to the big day! So much to do. We had hoped to move before the baby, but it's just not going to happen now. Still got the new kitchen to put in ... ho hum ...

hattyyellow · 08/10/2008 09:22

Morning everyone.

Lowrib the sleep problems are a killer - I'm just getting to that stage too. I remember it from last time around, either the baby starts going mad and wriggling at 3am or somehow its metabolism seems to override mine and I am wide awake for hours.

LadyT no - have left sorting out childcare with MIL's friend to DH and nothing done as yet. Am planning another onslaught this weekend when I get to 30 weeks. Have you made progress with clearing up the flat?

ZJ my midwife said babies position still didn't matter much at my 28 week appt last week.

Arti glad to be thought of!- I like the name Hestor.

Rhesus negative ladies - can you remind me when the next anti-d happens after the 28 week one in second pregnancies? Is it 34 weeks?

hattyyellow · 08/10/2008 09:26

ps Beans horrified at the conductor! What a nasty piece of work - hope you have complained.

Arti meant to say yes to the pelvic pain when getting off my office chair and also when getting out of bed after lying still - I was wondering if its when the baby is sitting breech as I remmeber it from last time, I guess the bum creates more pressure in your pelvis than the lighter head? (That probably has no scientific basis at all!)

waitinggirl · 08/10/2008 10:00

hello all - i was doing a workshop with kids yesterday and we were slapping our thighs, clapping hands and clicking our fingers to get the idea of rhythm. yesterday evening i took off my trousers to get into bed and found massive welts and bruises where i had slapped my thighs (really didn't think i had done it that hard). is this a pregnancy thing? should i talk to a mw? anyone else had this?

just wondered.

and yes to sleep deprivation - keep waking up between 4-6am and then unable to wake up at a decent time. next week will have to be in work at 8.30am 3 days a week - no idea how i will cope.

waitinggirl · 08/10/2008 10:21

also - for those sel-employed people out there who haven't yet sent their MA forms in - don't send them to your local job centre plus (like it tells you to on the form) - have just found out you should send it to an address in chester for it to be dealt with asap. have spoken to 3 different people who told me 3 different things, but i'm going with the nice, breezy, chirpy girl in chester who told me this. if anyone wants the address i'll post it or you could call the MA helpline on 0845 6088610.

Nolda · 08/10/2008 10:42

Verso I had one of those lying awake nights not long ago when I suddenly realised how soon the baby would be appearing. Had a good chat with the midwife at my next appointment who calmed some of my fears about the actual birth. I have also been potty training DD over the last week ready for pre-school in the new year. I suddenly realised that if the baby came early this might never be done and the pre-school won't take children still in nappies [panic emotion].

Lowrib I went on maternity leave at 34 weeks when I expected DD. Most of my colleagues went around 38 weeks but I couldn't stick it out any longer (I had a long journey to work and the other pregnant ladies at work lived close enough to nip home for a nap at lunchtime).

emmanbump · 08/10/2008 10:48

Majormoo Your poor DD hope she is feeling better now.

Donnylass & Kimberley I too have been getting a shooting pain in my right bum cheek for about 5 days now. It mainly happends when I am straightening up after sitting or about to walk after standing still. I just thought it was siatica (sp) and was hoping it would go away

Working from home today and tomo as had some pink sludge yesterday TMI sorry and have been advised to take it easy for a few day. Have booked Fri off woo hoo. Going down to visit my folks this weekend to get spoilt (i'm an only child). DH is going away this weekend so though rather than sitting around on my own I would go and see my parents. Only seen them once of twice since i've been PG and they are bursting to get they mits on me and pamper me a bit esp. Can't wait.

Sorry for the me me me post. But i'm bit excited as you can prob tell

zoejeanne · 08/10/2008 10:48

Morning all - it's a sunny day here in Yorkshire and I have the day off work - hurrah, can life be better! Hope you're all well today and not too tired (to those who didn't sleep well)?

donny/kimberley/lowrib very interested to hear about PGP - I've never heard of that before, but for a couple of weeks I have been getting pains in my bum when I stand up from being in my car/at my desk for a while - thought it was just a sign I should go for a wander more often and keep moving, but I think I'll mention it to the mw next time I see her.

veggie well done on the 100%, I'm very impressed!

I'm another one who's just reaching the point with work that I'm not interested anymore (and still have 6 1/2 weeks to go). My MW was saying back in her day they had to finish at 28 weeks, which right now sounds like a fab idea - I'm quite sure I'm not giving my all

Does anyone feel like their baby already has a little personality? I'm starting to feel differences in babyZJ's movements - sometimes I get a proper stroppy kick (esp when DH pokes me in my belly button), sometimes it feels like just contented little wriggles and last night I'd swear it was playing with me - it kept doing funny movements that made me laugh, and then every time I laughed it did another one, like it wanted me to laugh again. I'm getting quite attached to the little thing already (hormonal mum to be warning needed here I think! )

Have a good day everyone and I hope you have as much sunshine as I do xx
