Lol Mibbes but I will admit to packing talc for me. I dont know why this time, but I always use it on holiday so I just threw it in the shower bag

AND so exciting - the Fed Ex man just brought my cot
Its leaning up the sofa in the front room at the moment. It was the closest place I could think to tell him so leave it for me.

reban · 09/09/2008 13:45

LOL mibbes

zoejeanne · 09/09/2008 13:57

Thanks for all the talc tips ladies - guess I'll use that myself then! But definitely better to know now than later. And I thought I was being clever avoiding baby lotion, or is that better? And while we're on the subject of cleaning babies - do you really need all the baby shampoo, bubble bath etc - or does water do the job when they're small?

rosmerta pleased I'm not the only one to actually be excited about leakage - so far only one boob, but hoping the other will join the gang soon!

I'm having dress issues (thanks to effie for your suggestions on the other thread) as I've got an Isabella Oliver wrap dress for a couple of weddings next month - but it fits perfectly now, so I don't think it'll fit by the end of October. I got my normal size, so I don't know whether to get the next size, or find something else. Did someone say they found IO clothes too big? I don't want to end up looking like I'm wearing a tent that hangs off the rest of me, so not sure whether to get something different. Thanks!

rosmerta · 09/09/2008 14:44

zj I only used plain water for ds, don't need the lotions etc as it can dry out their skin. Plus when they're first born, you don't need to bathe them every day, just wash their creases with cotton wool & warm water

JamInMyWellies · 09/09/2008 14:46

popped a few holiday photos on my profile.

Oh and the best thing I found for DS was cotton wool and water and for the lovely scaly skin olive oil. We didnt bathe him for the first few wks.

Beans33 · 09/09/2008 15:03

Love your photos, Jam - gorgeous little sprog - so sweet!

I'm off to bed for a couple of hours now.

Hit a bit of a coldy wall. Might log on later, although might call it a day and be back tomorrow.

xx

Pregnancy brain moment of the week, turned up 1 3/4 hours early for my midwife appointment today . Luckily she was there and saw me anyway. Everything looking good, but baby on the big side, not really surprising though considering the size of my last one.

zoejeanne · 09/09/2008 15:13

katie I once turned up for an appointment at the hairdressers 2 weeks early! And I wasn't pregnant either. they normally ring me the day before my appointment now to confirm with me ...

katie3677 · 09/09/2008 15:50

I think MW's must be pretty used to it!

waitinggirl · 09/09/2008 16:20

hello all - so now i can finally feel the baby's movements. hurrah. however, in the last couple of days it hasn't been moving as obviously as before. sometimes i feel the movements a bit like what goes on before i have a pooh (TMI, apols). although i'm not having one, nor am i farting (ditto). does this still sound like baby movements, or do i just have weird wind?

i mean it's great and all feeling movements, but then i just start getting paranoid that it's all gone too quiet down there.

thoughts?

waitinggirl · 09/09/2008 16:21

btw the obsession with phil and teds is increasing. stopped a random woman in a tube station to ask about them. but you can't get the baby to face you lying down in a carry cot position, can you? only in the car seat thing.

anyone spotted i'm avoiding my dissertation yet?

waitinggirl · 09/09/2008 16:23

btw - is anyone attending birthlight classes? i'm currently transcribing an interview with Francoise Freedman, who founded Birthlight and studied birth in the AMazon rainforest - she is a wonderful woman, so inspiring, so gentle. am going to have to start going to her classes now, too.

ps - will stop soon, i promise.

SummerLightning · 09/09/2008 16:23

Mine definitely has quieter and more active phases, and yes what you are describing does sound like what it feels like to me sometimes.

I got worried to begin with when it went quieter for a few days but am not getting so worried now as I have realised that I think it does go through phases.

waitinggirl · 09/09/2008 16:36

SL good to hear i'm not alone with the weird wind feeling.

JamInMyWellies · 09/09/2008 16:47

waiting girl I have a P&T vibe and you can have them facing you when they are lying down.
and those sound exactly the right sort of feelings you are having and yes they do have quiet days and then they have days where they feel like they are about to push their way out of your belly button.

poisondwarf · 09/09/2008 17:28

I also confess I have a cleaner - DP. Well, he doesn't like me using cleaning products etc while I'm pg / breastfeeding ... who am I to argue? We are both naturally slobs (especially me) but actually our flat is much cleaner & tidier since the little one came along - you are forced to be more organised otherwise you'd be drowning in crap after a day, and even though I'm a slob I actually hate living in a messy place. The best buy we got before the baby came last time was a massive clothes rack for drying.

On the subject of shopping, I plan to buy as close to nothing as is humanly possible - we still have everything from last time so it shouldn't be too hard. Not that I bought much then either - I am Mrs hand-me-down and I love it. I find shopping painful - I'd much rather be given a pram and make do with it rather than agonise over which one to buy. Actually, having said that I am going to have to sort something out transport-wise. A double buggy is probably out of the question for space and money reasons so I think we're going to see how we get on with a sling/buggy board combination. Has anyone tried this? I'm really not looking forward to choosing a sling (we have a Baby Bjorn from last time - okay for short stretches but I need something I can wear for hours). I keep starting to research it but there is just too much choice and too much information and it does my head in.

I thought the talc thing was something to do with the fine silicone powder (or whatever it is) getting into the lungs. We used cornflour for the first few months (with olive oil for scaly skin - he smelled like a pizza) but didn't bother after that. I don't know if it's typical but DS really didn't get nappy rash for the first few months (apart from one time when he was about 4 months old when he had bright green poo for about 2 weeks). We used cotton wool and water for the first couple of weeks until a friend told us they just dunked the baby's bottom half in the sink at each nappy change (sorry hygiene fans!) so we adopted that & it's what we still do at 17 months. We only use wipes if we have to change him out and about (which luckily happens remarkably infrequently) - we still have wipes left from the Bounty packs before he was born. I'm having a girl this time round and I must admit I'm not looking forward to the runny nappy stage - far too many nooks and crannies to keep clean ... are boys easier or is it just whatever you're used to?

Sympathy for all those with colds - I had a humdinger a couple of weeks ago & am only just getting rid of the last traces now. I hardly ever get colds but this was the second one this pregnancy, and I ended up taking 2 days off work. I really wished I'd taken longer though as it's taken so long to shake off - Beans, you have my permission to take the rest of the week off (your colleagues will thank you for it - mine were treated to a good few days of sneezing, coughing and general wailing and moaning). Luckily the guy next to me is in my bad books big time so I was quite gratified to see him turn up with the lurgy a few days later.

On pregnancy brain - I actually missed my midwife appointment altogether on Friday (thought it was this Friday coming). Only noticed this morning. Blimey, it's not like I've got a million and one midwife appointments to remember - this is only my 3rd one after all. So embarrassed - I'm the first to whinge about people wasting NHS resources by not turning up so slapped wrists all round.

Turnip love the photo of your little girl - she's just like a little china doll isn't she?

waitinggirl what's Birthlight? I don't think I've heard of that.

waitinggirl · 09/09/2008 17:32

Birthlight Trust website

rosmerta · 09/09/2008 18:16

poisondwarf I'm doing the same as you, we've still got so much stuff from last time & my SIL had a baby a couple of months ago so no doubt we'll get lots of hand me downs from her as well. Most of what we need to get is actually for ds (bed etc). Re slings, I'm having a headache as well. I've been offered a Babasling so might give that a go. We were looking a buggy boards which are two steps so the dc can sit down. Only thing I'm worried about is that I've seen people with them and they have to push the pushchair so far in front of them that it looks really uncomfortable - anyone have any thoughts on that?

wow that actually worked

Verso · 09/09/2008 20:14

rosmerta thanks for the info on staggered starts. DH and I have just been talking about 'wraparound' care etc and it's all quite scary and complicated. Btw I knew one of the women on the documentary you watched . I had no idea she was going to be on it as we lost touch when we moved house - but she used to be at our church where we used to live. We knew her and her two eldest children quite well... then the whole breakup of her relationship and then realising she was gay etc... quite a lot to take in. Had no idea (although she was pg at the time) that she was going to go it alone birthwise. But I think the documentary was a bit unfair as it didn't mention that she's a doula for a living, so she might know more about the risks than most and be able to make a more informed choice.

There was something else I came here to post about but it's gone... lol

rosmerta · 09/09/2008 21:21

verso think that was someone else talking about staggered starts, I'm still trying to get my head around ds going to nursery school next year! Re the documentary, it is a bit unfair not to mention she is a doula, like you say, she'd be a bit more aware. Did quite enjoy though anyway!

I'm so longing for a full night's sleep [yawwwwnnnn]

OP posts:
LadyThompson · 10/09/2008 10:38

Anyone watch that show about crossfeeding last night? I doubt I will breastfeed, or not for long anyway, but it was interesting nonetheless.

I know what you mean Rosmerta, I woke up at 5 absolutely buzzing so I just got up. I have so many things to do before I finish work, I am in a blind panic trying to wind everything up, and just generally...I was up making endless lists of things to do. I think this pregnancy is actually making me slightly nutso. I am also finding that I am thinking about things DP should do and it is SOOOOOO hard not to nag him.

Getting strange pains like mild period pains. I presume it's the uterus stretching and nothing to worry about...some days I feel less like a person than a collection of odd symptoms. What a strange physical and mental state this pregnancy lark induces. How is Turnip this morning?

kmp1 · 10/09/2008 11:01

Hi all! why does the web page show page 11 of 12 but I can't get to page 12? Anyone else have this?
