I just had a 24 wk GP appt (at 25 wks) and they didn't measure anything????? Was jsut BP and heartbeat? Should they have measured? I want to be measured .... how do they do that? from what point to what point? I'll get my Ikea tape measure and do it myself!

rosmerta · 01/09/2008 14:40

Kmp, they didn't measure me either at my 24 weeks appt. Iirc, they start measuring each appt after the 28 weeks appt. And they measure from just above the bump down to the pelvis.

I remember the mw's always tutting at the measurements when the dr did it saying he always got it wrong!

pixsix, glad you're not worrying too much, it doesn't sound as though the GP thinks its too serious. Could be a mistake in measuring or that your dates are slightly out

OP posts:
pixsix · 01/09/2008 14:48

Lol kmp will you go back and demand to be measured??

Beans33 · 01/09/2008 14:49

KMP - you can measure yourself - if you do it roughly from your pelvic bone to the top of your bump, it should correlate to how many weeks pregnant you are to the cms - ie. mine is now 26cm, and I'm 26 weeks, which is fun!

Natalie537 · 01/09/2008 14:50

Hello to all! im new here im due 9th dec with my 2nd baby which ive been told from scans is a a girl i already have a daughter who is 2! not had the smoothest pregnancy so far how is everyone feeling?

waitinggirl · 01/09/2008 14:51

i think they only measured me at 22 weeks because i was convinced my bump was too big -but i was bang on.

btw - i have all my check ups at the hospital and none with the GP midwife - should i go and see her as well? when i saw her initially at 6 weeks, she said that a couple of the check ups would be with her, but they never seem to be.

should i start trying to foster a relationship with her in terms of postnatal care?

oops, slapped wrist for not concentrating on work

Beans33 · 01/09/2008 14:56

Hi Natalie - welcome - we all chat a lot, so get ready for marathon nattering! Sorry you haven't had a smooth pregnancy. Hope it starts to get better for you soon.

WG - I have had 2 midwife appointments and it's a different person each time! But I'm not overly worried! Apparently it's different people altogether in hospital. And afterwards I htink you only see them a few times, so I'm really not phased about it!

kmp1 · 01/09/2008 15:03

Hi Natalie, yeah it's hard to keep up on this board! Lot's of chatting!
Thanks all - I will wait till my 28 wk appointment and then demand a measurment if they don't offer then! I just tried myself (with my trusty Ikea tape measure) and it's really hard cause I don't know exactly where the top of the bump is etc and the lower point to measure to! (plus I'm finding it difficult to see down very far! I have been told from scan I have bigger than average baby though!

zoejeanne · 01/09/2008 15:11

WG/beans I haven't seen a doctor since my appt when I went to tell him I was pregnant. At my booking in I was given 'midwife led care' status on my notes and have just had 4 weekly appts with a midwife (whoever is on duty that week). But like everything else, I'm discovering that different areas have different rules.

I've got my 24 appt tomorrow, so will measure myself if the MW doesn't (now I know how to do it! )

turnip sorry to hear about your husbands job - my fingers are crossed that whatever the outcome is for the best for your family.

natalie welcome

oh and wg, looking forward to hearing a countdown of the most popular prams!

JollyBear · 01/09/2008 15:26

LOL at you checking out the prams waitinggirl.

I went shopping into Manchester with MIL on Saturday and was on pramwatch. So much so that when Katie from Emmerdale walked past (the blonde one- I think she is called Katie but don't actually watch it) I didn't notice because I was busy checking out her pram! She had a Maclaren by the way .

missmama · 01/09/2008 15:31

Hello Reban
I didn't realise anybody else on here was from Birmingham. I was beginning to feel lonely with all the talk of London meet ups
I can also sympathise with you on the heartburn front. I am already on my second bottle of gaviscon.

Beans33 · 01/09/2008 15:33

I was advised that Phil & Teds are brilliant if you're planning to have a 2nd one relatively quickly, which we are. BUT they don't sell them at John Lewis and we've got vouchers for nearly a grand for there, which we want to spend on our pram/travel system thingy. So think we'll be going for something else. Damn!

kmp1 · 01/09/2008 15:37

I've bought the Out n About Nipper 360 - it's such a reasonable price and so well made that I thought I can always sell it when I have another (if the buggy board won't do!) It has really good wheels and seems really well built - got it online 50.00 cheaper than the high street!

Beans33 · 01/09/2008 15:56

Does anyone else sometimes wonder if there's maybe a bit too much info out there for us to have a look at? I'm sure that I'm talking myself into a few symptoms that I don't actually have!

Veggiemummy · 01/09/2008 17:03

i had a bump measurement at the 24 week apt i just had and i was 27cm, but i really think a few of those cm's are me. They didnt mention anything about a growth scan. when i compare this DS's scan measurements this one is a bit bigger but not heaps.

i will be in London the weekend before the meet up and the weekend after which is a bummer maybe i'll be around for the next one. I feel like i am hardly in Derby this month.

waitinggirl · 01/09/2008 17:05

just thought i'd keep you informed that 3 wheelers are very popular in this part of north london, and seeing as i only know phil and teds as 3 wheelers, everyone seems to have phil and teds.

think i've got them on the brain.

i did see one stokke, however, and i've just looked that up and it costs around £700. hmmm...

and yes, beans, there is WAY too much information out there. imagine 150 years ago, we'd still be out in the fields working our socks off and we'd just get on with being pregnant.

Beans33 · 01/09/2008 17:12

That's so true, WG! That's what I keep telling myself as well. I mustn't fret about every single twinge etc. I'm such a hypo at the best of times, let alone pregnant!

Right heading home now. Have a good evening all and chat tomorrow no doubt.

x

abbymeg · 01/09/2008 17:36

After all the worrying about requesting an elective it was fine! DS booked to arrive on 15th December - it's very odd knowing when he will arrive. The Dr was great; she'd read what I'd written about DD's birth and asked me if I'd considered my options. When I assured her that I had, she booked me in. It's a relief.

A quick question - I keep getting really breathless and I get a pounding heart. Someone suggested that this can happen if you're low on iron? Has anyone else experienced this?

Best wishes to everyone

LadyThompson · 01/09/2008 18:12

Just checking in briefly re: breathlessness - (Turnip, I'm sorry about your husband's job and Pixsix, I hope you are ok). I have had this, especially at night, but I read that it's common in the third trimester, which I read began at 27 weeks, which is how far I am, nearly (am 27cm, I measured - how weird), when the uterus starts to press into the diaphragm and your lungs won't fill (even though it feels nasty apparently your body compensates somehow). It's worse if you are carrying your bump high - like me.

Reban, MissMama, I was actually born in Great Barr and my Mum and sister still live there

Veggiemummy · 01/09/2008 18:22

oh yeah Turnip i meant to say that is a bummer about starting out as a Mortgage broker when you did very bad timing, hopefully will be all for the best and you will next career change exciting. I for one am hoping this housing market sorts itself out.

Abbey i've had the breathlessness and palpitation apparently quite common in 2nd trimester to do with hormones and increased blood volume and completely normal nothing to do with iron as mine is fine. My MW did tell me that taking breaths through your nose to the count of 3 then breathing out through your mouth but with your lips only just apart to the count of and repeating this a few times can help and it did for me. But don't worry it's nothing your doing it's just another preggers thing

kmp1 · 01/09/2008 18:32

Veggie bummer about missing the meet up - I wonder if the 19th is set in stone? Abbemeg I'm booked in for his b'day too - it's wierd telling people when the baby will be born and making plans accordingly! People keep saying "oooh but he might come late" when I tell them when I'm due, and I say - no he's coming on that date!

majormoo · 01/09/2008 18:36

Abbey/KMP how exciting knowing exactly when your babies will arrive

Beans glad all went well with your colleague.

I am shattered today. DD wet the bed last night at 1.30 am so I had to do the whole changing the sheets malarkey, then could not get back to sleep til gone 3. DS as usual was up at 6.15am. Still it is our wedding anniversary today so I did subsequently get breakfast in bed. Once kids are in bed we have steak and chips for dinner! Mind you I feel a bit like that 'Outnumbered' program and that we will both be exhausted by the time we finally have time to ourselves.

katie3677 · 01/09/2008 18:47

Do you measure the bump when you're standing, sitting or lying down? I get different measurements for each, and according to the standing measurement I should be going into labour in the next 2 weeks!

I will quiz the IM when i see her on 17th also will hopefully catch up with a midwife friend while in london so will ask her.
