tyv, I know what you mean, I think choosing a sling is more complicated than picking a pushchair

OP posts:
zoejeanne · 22/08/2008 15:05

And I thought I was making a simpler choice in going for a sling rather than a 3-wheeler! All this is blowing my brain on a Friday!

I intended to start shopping early and spread the cost, but those weekends keep slipping away and all I have so far is 2 babygros and a wallpaper border, curtains and a lampshade. Oh well, plenty of time

Enjoy your shopping this afternoon, all those who are splashing the cash!

SummerLightning · 22/08/2008 15:09

oh dear, i am so sleepy. And i have hardly done any work today...

Indith · 22/08/2008 15:10

Lol, slings are just addictive that is the problem, you want one of everything! And thena few more in different fabrics....

Veggiemummy · 22/08/2008 15:22

right i'm off to catch my train have a lovely weekend and just a tip on expense get as much free stuff as possible so you ca spend what you need on the oter stuff we found it was actually more cost effective to get what we really thouht was right regardless of price (within reason) cos in the few cases where we went for alower cost version we often regretted it and ended up having to upgrade anyway. Also leave as much as possible until after baby arrives as you will discover what you really need and your perspective on what you should spend dramatically changes.

ok off now take care all and hope you all have a nice weekend (and eat cake yay)

Twiga · 22/08/2008 15:23

Hi all, sorry it's been an absolute age since I checked in - been caught up with moving from Edinburgh all the way down to Brighton with dh's job - 6 months working at the hospital here in neo-nates. Got here Sunday and up to our eyes in half opened boxes etc - thank goodness my folks arrive tonight for the weekend!

All fine here, feel huge at 22 wks but everything fine, all the bleeding etc that I was having probs with settled a while back and things looking good. At 20 wk scan they found that baby's cord only has 2 instead of 3 vessels but apparently this is quite common and the only thing to worry about is if there is a sudden decrease in movement (slight risk of less nutrients etc being transferred which may affect growth etc). Currently totally out of the loop as seems to be really hard to get signed up with a gp here but hoping this will get sorted soon as need to get onto the system with someone! Will try and have a scan down the thread and catch up properly later tonight - on borrowed time as both dc napping, as is dh - although he is on nights so can be let off !

kmp1 · 22/08/2008 15:42

Hi Twiga, we just did that for DH job - from Devon to London (nearly was Brighton!) bloody NHS! Are you only down for 6 months? that's a big move! I feel for you with the unpacking esp with dc already! Glad everyhting is ok after scan's etc. I know what you mean about the GP - I had hassle cause I wanted to go to a hosp out of area. Now that's sorted I have to sort out a dentist. Good luck with the unpacking!

TheInvisibleHand · 22/08/2008 15:46

theyoungvisiter - I had a Kari-me (given to me second hand - I think they are about £40-45 new, which seems mad for what looks like a long piece of T-shirt material). It was great for at least about 6 months but DD is quite little and I'd agree with Indith that as she got bigger the sling got too stretchy to carry her comfortably.

Twiga - that sounds like quite a move. Hope settling in Brighton goes well!

kmp1 · 22/08/2008 15:51

anyone have any opinions on re-useable nappies? Heard Bumgenius are quite good and wondering about the savings etc....

SummerLightning · 22/08/2008 15:53

bumgenius, hahahahaha that is just brilliant!

SummerLightning · 22/08/2008 15:54

sorry that wasn't very helpful but I had to express my amusement at the name!

Indith · 22/08/2008 16:01

Terry squares, cheap, easy (honest! Even dp can do them), quick to dry, versitile (change mat, bib, blanket when you've forgotten one in the pram...) and just as much "fun" as shaped nappies since you can get bamboo ones, brightly coloured ones etc and of course all the funky wraps.

rosmerta · 22/08/2008 16:04

speaking of nappies, for those of us in London there is a voucher scheme which you can put either towards buying nappies or towards the nappy laundry scheme.

Real Nappies for London

OP posts:
Indith · 22/08/2008 16:04

Should add a little, before ds came along I was terrified of squares, thought they were hard work etc and got shaped nappies (tots bots fluffles). They are good but I wouldn't say they were easier than flat nappies. Plus terries you can fold the legs in to catch all that wonderful small baby milky poo. Plus shaped ones are expensive and you end up having to buy different sizes (you can get birth to potty but they are hufe on newborns). With squares you only need to buy different sizes of wrap as they get older.

Indith · 22/08/2008 16:06

Can anyone tell that I am bored, can't be arsed to do housework as I am shattered after bad night with ds which he is currently making up for? He has been asleep since about 1, and that after having 2 hour nap this morning. I really should wake him but don't have the heart to. He is clearly not very well!

SummerLightning · 22/08/2008 16:09

has anyone here had stretch marks, I have just suddenly noticed two red vertical lines on my stomach. The thing is they are really sore, i didn't expect them to hurt!

I just went outside and played a bit of frisbee and I am wondering if I caught myself or something and gave myself a scratch but it seems unlikely. Bummer

Indith · 22/08/2008 16:19

Not yet. Was really happy with ds, didn't get any on my tummy....then by breasts exploded in red stripes

Keep moisturising. You can't help getting them (your skin either does or doesn't) but moisturising helps your skin to be a bit more comfortable as it stretches, stops it itching etc.

EffiePerine · 22/08/2008 16:23

oh dear SL

Didn;t get them last time with DS, but this was great for moisturising generally (and soothing)

SummerLightning · 22/08/2008 16:27

damn, i think it is them, they just appeared like that in 5 minutes flat (was probably stretching playing frisbee that did it)
What am i going to be like by the end!! Bump is not even that big yet

hattyyellow · 22/08/2008 16:30

No stretch marks for me yet, didn't get any with the girls so hoping that it won't happen this time. Think like Indith says it depends a lot on skin type, no stretch marks makes up for a shiny nose!

Wow Twiga what a long move. Hope you get sorted onto the hospital system and get a scan soon.

Cheers for all advice on baby clothing. Any hot tips for snowsuits? We had these for our girls www.bush-baby.com/snugbug.htm but am wondering whether the fleece will be warm enough for middle of winter as they wore theirs in spring..do you think one of those padded thicker ones better? We live in the country so will be outside a fair bit for walks etc..

Really should start worrying about car seat/pram/actual birth before fretting about this! I am just so nervous about the poor mite freezing in the Northern winds!

Beans33 · 22/08/2008 16:31

I was thinking about getting those recycling nappies, which you keep the outers and change the inside or something. Don't really get it, to be honest.

So, I went to H&M at lunchtime. Miserable. I finally squeezed into a size 18, but they were far too long. Not being funny, but I'm wearing my size 14 pre-pregnancy jeans today, just with a hairband round the button. I can't be a size 18! Surely. Went to Topshop too, but they were all underbump. I think I'll go back there if I'm feeling desperate. Or else will fork out the extra at Formes or somewhere for a smart pair.

to make myself feel better, I bought 3 tops in Topshop.

SL - I don't have stretchmarks yet, but got them on my thighs and bottom from teenage years, so am just awaiting the inevitable.

I'm so sad after lunchtime shopping. Not a good start to my weekend. weep.

SummerLightning · 22/08/2008 16:36

Debenhams (red herring) and Gap to over the bump jeans Beans. Were these size 18s maternity ones as well?? I think everyone should just ignore H&M sizes from now on and not worry about them! Just buy what fits and take the label out or something. They seem to be causing far too much stress! There is no maternity section in H&M near me so I have not been in there.

I am tired and fed up now, so I'm going to go home!

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Beans33 · 22/08/2008 16:38

Thanks SL - I will head there instead! Much less depressing! H&M are on my blacklist!!!

Beans33 · 22/08/2008 16:40

PS Yes, they were size 18 maternity ones. Gutted.

Wow, roll on the weekend. suddenly all busy at work. most frustrating. Just want to bugger off for the weekend now.

hattyyellow · 22/08/2008 16:42

I too feel gloom. Up very early with DDs and just want to go to bed and sleep for a hundred years like sleeping beauty - albeit the bloated, roundfaced, swollen ankled version
