Hi Veggie yeah I think I will base myself at me parents north of Bris, and see a couple of people on day trips and then the rest can come to me - i can imagine it will be hard especially with it being our first baby plus DH doesn't do well with jetlag and will prob sleep more than bub during the 1st week after getting there!!! Get cheap flights(thank God)cause I work for an airline

Veggiemummy · 21/08/2008 17:18

oh man i had a tomato and onion sandwich earlier (well 2 actually) for lunch and the onion seems to be bouncing around in my tummy in a very acidic fashion, this must go down as worst heartburn day.

apparently BFing uses more calories than being pregnant so very good for weight loss

LadyThompson · 21/08/2008 17:21

My thighs are out of control. They are the worst thing. My upper arms aren't too clever either. I am apoplectic at these women who just seem to have a bump and nothing else.

Oh well, I think we're going to have to lump it - literally - for now as everything I read says dieting whilst pregnant is a no-no. You can only 'try to arrest the weight gain'

SummerLightning · 21/08/2008 17:23

I am not so bothered on my upper thighs as they are covered but my upper arms are minging.

Veggiemummy · 21/08/2008 17:35

when i was 24 weeks pregnant with DS we went on holiday to Italy. We went over to capri on a day trip, not advisable when you are feeling fat & frumpy. Everywhere there were beautiful people and the pregnant women we did see where nothing but superskinny body and then bump. They looked more like they had shoved a balloon up their designer label maternity dresses. DH tried to make me feel better by reminding me of all the really large older italian women we had seen on our travels, but i just felt frumpy and unattractive.

jumpjockey · 21/08/2008 17:36

Afternoon everyone - I'm stuck on the late shift at work today so plenty of time to browse the web - or do I mean get lots of work achieved, ahem.

Jam - I'm sorry to say today's healthy eating went out the window at first sight of the huge slabs of cheesecake in the canteen at lunchtime. Oh dear, did I accidentally take the biggest slice on the plate? mmmmmm Oh and am loving you m/w's advice!

hi lowrib, welcome to the madhouse [wave]

Effie - which bit of Essex are you moving to? I grew up in the north not far from Colchester.

kmp hope you had a good walk! We're planning to do the same - sling most of the time. Our house is really small and I measured the hallway and most of the standard size buggies with prams are too big to fit in!

Veggiemummy · 21/08/2008 17:38

where north of bris are you from (have you told me this) if we could live there with DH's work i would love to live on the sunshine coast, the hinterland is so lovely and the beaches are so much nicer than gold coast. Also not polluted like sydney beaches.

JamInMyWellies · 21/08/2008 17:41

just dashing in am not really here still have not packed any suitcases.

I can gine you a lovely tale about BF and weight loss, last time round I gained nearly 3stone but 3 wks after having DS and exclusively BF while eating massive and I mean massive amounts of food I was back in pre preg jeans bit of a muffin top but there is hope out there girls and her name is BREASTFEEDING

back to pretending to tidy up and pack for hols

Verso · 21/08/2008 18:21

I too lost lots of weight last time breastfeeding - back to a size 14 (which is mega-slim for me!) by the christening (unfortunately it didn't last - a course of AD's for PND bunged it all back on again alas... but I am not worrying too much about my mahoosive proportions at the moment as I know it will even itself out eventually.)

kmp sounds like you've had a really low day, you poor thing. Have some virtual {{{hugs}}}. You really will be fine - if you want to lose the weight after the baby comes, you will - eventually! Just don't even try to diet if you're BF for the first few months - it will play havoc with your milk supply, and as everyone says some weight will come off automatically anyway!

majormoo · 21/08/2008 19:20

KMP-I have also found I lost weight quickly after having my kids and did breastfeed. Just be prepared that it is not IMMEDIATE. You will still look pregnant at first when you have given birth and that is completely normal. Does not take long to start coming off though. Hope you feel better soon.

We got a travel system first time round and regretted it. The more lightweight the better I think.

Indith · 21/08/2008 19:21

Have read, havce forgotten most of it

Note to self, do not walk to botanic gardens and back with some shopping in town on the way with ds in a wrap sling. You will be the most shattered, hobbling old lady in the world afterwards. Ooops.

Rhinestone hope your mum is ok, on the bright side, the screening programme works and anything potentially nasty has been caught nice and early.

Lowrib and others moving house, just take it easy! I ran around like a mad thing and was determined to do bits of unpacking while dp was at work, lifted boxes etc. Just not a good idea, we all like to think "I can manage, I'm pg not ill" but god my bump hurt for a good bit after! Mind you at 36 weeks or so you probably won't be able to get close wnough to the boxes to llift them

Can't imagine ever wanting to live in London, do ex Londoners really love it and miss it that much? It just seems huge and dirty and scary.....I like my pretty little city. Still think moving to Hexham would be nicer, dp remains unconvinced.

kmp don't you dare worry about not being able to wear pre-preg jeans for goodness sake woman you are properly pregnant! Yes we tend to put weight on while pg, it is perfectly natural and normal and 99% of women do it. And it does come off, some lose it straight away, others need a bit more time and effort. BF does help a lot of people, on the other hand bf can also lead to eating just as much as when you were pg and thus not losing any weight at all. But sod it, that is ok too Oh and post baby, when you are sick of maternity stuff and the bump has deflated so it doesn't fit anyway and you can't fit into pre-preg jeans. New Look, purveyor of the hula jean, nice cut, easy on the flabby tummy and under £15.

Who was taking about travel systems etc. My tuppence worth is that travel systems are generally useless, much more practical to have a good pushchair that is light and easy to push and a sling. Or several slings

We had a travel system with ds, I hate it. It got "used" as it were going on the train to visit parents as we didn't havce a car so we took chassis and carseat but to be honest it isn't worth buying one just for that, we could have got the bus instead or even taken the carseat and a sling. People somehow manage without a carseat that clips to a buggy after stage 0!

Glad to hear JL can behave themselves with wedding lists! And yes, whoever it was, I agree that going round with the swiper thingy is the most fun in the world ever. Especially trying to hide it from ds, trying to swipe plates etc while restraining ds from playing with them, dragging ds out from under the display beds.....

kmp1 · 21/08/2008 19:31

Hi all - I'm back from walking the dog..... well I walked her to the car and she sat in it while I nipped round Tesco does that count? Will have a big walk tomorrow though..... Thanks all of you for your comments - I already feel better - especially about the BF stories Jam and Verso I heard that it can use up to 5-600 calories a day! I am going to eat sensibly from this point on and hopefully not baloon out any further! Having a salad for dinner and some low fat soup!
Veggie I grew up on the Sunshine Coast (near Noosa)! Friends are still there but my parents have moved north to Hervey Bay and brother in Cairns. Not sure where we will settle back when we go in 3-4 years, but I do miss my friends and the weather on the SS Coast!

artichokes · 21/08/2008 19:38

Hiya - just a quicky. I too am starting to feel rather frumpy which should make Sicily fun! I have put on 15lbs so far which is much better than with DD when I put on 2 stone by 26 weeks BUT I still feel lumpy. With DD I BF exclusivly and lost all my pregnancy weight plus alot more while eating pastries most days!!! It was heaven! It took several months - I had put on 5 stone in pregnancy but within 7 months I had lost 6 stone and was nearly a size 10 (a miracle as I was a 14 when I got pregnant). IMO breastfeeding rocks for many reasons but one of the best bits is the weight loss.

hattyyellow · 21/08/2008 19:42

Oh I love this thread. I too am feeling like a big fat whale today, rather than glowing pregnant goddess.

I am only pregnant woman I know in RL, so all my mum friends are floating around in little summery tops and dresses and I feel like a bloated elephant.

Last time round, it didn't bother me so much but this time I know how much work it was to get the weight off. Which was largely my fault for eating for 10 when breastfeeding! Loads of weight did actually come off when I first started breastfeeding, I just put it back on by eating crap - so am determined to try and ditch the chocolate this time!

Will resolve not to worry so much about weight now thanks to all your sage thoughts on the subject .

EffiePerine · 21/08/2008 19:46

jj: we're planning on moving to colchester, need to sell or rent this place first!

kmp: mat trousers do depend on the cut, I remember not being able to get into topshop jeans last time but the black trousers I have on now are fine. Have heard good things about Gap maternity but you need to get to a store that sells the range - online not available in the UK (grrr). Oh and I put on 3 stone with DS and lost it in about 9 months (combination of bfing and walking everywhere). After a year I was actually lighter than before I got pregnant, (that changed when DS settled down and started sleeping)

Veggiemummy · 21/08/2008 20:34

i guess from the outside London does look big and busy and nasty but if you take it in bite sizes and find all the brilliant little nice bits it is actually quite a great place. I still miss nice strolls along the canals, or coffee at my fav cafe on bricklane and the markets at spitalfields and walking through the foot tunel to greenwich (i have been to loads of other places in London just a bit of an east ender). oh and don't even get me started on running routes that i love.

rosmerta · 21/08/2008 20:37

I do love London and wouldn't like to leave, but on the other hand I don't like the idea of raising dcs here. Bit irrational as its probably no more dangerous than anywhere else really but still...

theyoungvisiter · 21/08/2008 20:39

Just catching up on the thread - Rhinestone, so sorry to hear about your mum - very worrying but it sounds very early stage and they are so clever these days.

BFing, I'm not sure if I should say this! but alas I didn't lose much weight with bfing, I found it made me SO hungry I easily outweighed the calorie demands with cake! But the plus side was that I stuffed myself like a pig for 6 months and literally ate triple portions of whatever I liked (much MUCH more than when I was pg) without putting on any extra weight, I just didn't lose much of my pg weight at first. I only got back to my pre-pregnancy weight after about a year, when my appetite returned to a more normal level!

But on the plus side, I was looking at my notes today and I was exactly the same booking weight with DS as I was with this pg, which has got to be fairly good, right?

rosmerta · 21/08/2008 20:41

I've just read back over the thread,

rhinestone sorry to hear about your mum, it does sound like they've caught it early so hopefully she's going to be fine ((hugs))

Olipop · 22/08/2008 07:05

Morning ladies.
Rhinestone so worrying for you, lets hope its all sorted quickly.

Well, the scan went really well. Everything seems fine and all measurements were normal. Little monkey wouldn't get into the right position so was sent to the loo for a wee and some star jumps!!!!

Took the whole day off work as scan was middle of the day which was lovely. Took DS to nursery as usual and did a massive swim followed by laying on the sofa with crud magazines and cake!!! Bliss!

Welcome Lowrib, nice to meet you!

Olipop · 22/08/2008 07:08

Oh, and on the weight thing....I too breastfed a guzzly little baby and had to be told that I couldn't wear the jeans I was wearing anymore as they looked far too big! That is the best feeling in the world! (well, apart from holding your newborn of course!! )

zoejeanne · 22/08/2008 09:18

Morning all, greta to hear about a sucessful scan olipop

Hope you're feeling more positive today kmp? I'm also eating like a horse, but trying to be healthy by balancing every slice of cake with a piece of fruit (wierd logic, but it feels healthy in my head!)

Really interested to read the comments about the travel systems/slings - I've been browsing endless catlogues this week trying to work out what is best, and think I'd come to the conclusion that a travel system isn't needed, which is what you all seem to think too. As a farmers wife my walking will be properly off road, or round the shops each week. We thought about a 3 wheeler - but actually I'm leaning more towards a sling for the off road and normal pushchair/pram for the pavements. Does that sound sensible? Also a sling will leave hand free for a dog lead ...

The nursery decor arrived this week, so I'm looking forward to a weekend of painting, outting up borders, hanging curtains etc - can't wait to see it in place

Have a good day everyone (and sorry this is so long!)

EffiePerine · 22/08/2008 09:28

zoe: I'd go for the sling, then if you feel you need another buggy for later on you can get one. Even the most expensive sling is going to be a fraction of the cost of a mountain buggy!

I'd recommend a wrap sling (woven or stretchy) to start with if you're walking around (lots of support). I have one of these which I found very handy once you get the hang of tying it (which is easier with a small baby as they don't tned to wriggle so much). Have also heard good things about these though haven't tried one myself. The Didymos I have is a zise 6 and quite heavy, so I might try a slightly shorter one in a lighter fabric for when the baby is smaller.

zoejeanne · 22/08/2008 09:45

Thanks Effie, not heard of either of those so the recommendation is really useful. A friend has given me a baby carrier, but I don't think it can be used til the baby is big enough to hold it's head up, so the sling will be could for the interim.

Beans33 · 22/08/2008 09:51

Oh, I'm getting a travel system. A silvercross 3-D system. Just think I'll use it all the time. And hoping to get a second hand 3-wheeler for running and for when we go on holiday to Lakes and North Wales...
