charleypops · 01/02/2005 21:05

Oops - sorry meant about your baby!

Oh I see - I remember the old rubber thingies with the uncomfortable looking elastic legs. I thought perhaps they were like nappy bags

Charley - this time round i would like (in order of preferrence) a non-crying, good sleeping, easy weaning, 7½lb, contented baby!!

katzguk · 01/02/2005 21:10

exactly like those horrible rubber things but now they are mad eof nice soft fabrics which don't leave nasty red grooves!

charleypops · 01/02/2005 21:13

LOL Me too!

I'm very impressed that so many of you used real nappies. I have to say I've felt guilty about using disposables since DS was born, but not enough to get off my arse and actually do something about it. How easy is it to get started?

Katzguk, I'll have one of those babies too please. With a small head. Was showing my scan photo to a friend at work today and she said 'oooh, looks like it's got a big head'.

Mirage, I was the same - didn't give my 'bits' a second thought during the birth. I did intend to have a bit of tidy-up wax before DS arrived but he came early. I had a wax when I was about 6 months pg and it definitely hurt more than pre-pregnancy - did anyone else find that?

See what you've done Charleypops - it's non-stop pubic talk now.

JonahB · 01/02/2005 21:51

Evening all,

I tried to read all the hundreds of messages you have written today, plus you all trying to lose me by starting this thread, but i've found you, ha!

I've had day of hell and I'm going to moan. It involved a car crash (i'm fine), computer crashing for 2 hours this evening when I got home, argument with DH, who has spent the past 48 hours avoiding me like the plague. Much worse than all these things, we have no chocolate in the house!!!!!!!

Plus you talking about hairy beavers?????? Lordy lord. Isn't that what your DH's beard trimmer is for?

That felt so good...............

MrsWednesday · 01/02/2005 21:56

Yep, that sounds like an absolute day from hell JonahB.

Glad you're ok.

Don't stoop to this (knicker) level! Tomorrow we should try and talk about philosophy .

PinkArjuna · 01/02/2005 22:07

I don't think I'll be using real nappies. I would love to think I was commited to them but I think they'll just give me a headache. I don't have a drying machine - Can't afford a drying machine. I figure I recycle anyway and the amount I would be using in electric would be taking from the Supplies of Natural fuel anyway so it is a no win situation. I'm on my own so I am damned if I am going to sit around soaking icky nappies when I'll be exhausted anyway. Big moral dilema though. Are they any good? I spoke to a few people who tried to use them and hated them. They ended up buying a few types but the baby would always be wetter and they gave up. I have a tiny kitchen too and if I have to live with soaking soiled nappies I think I would end up wanting to put myself out of my misery. Besides I got loads of pampers vouchers through the post and a boots advantage card that'll click up the points. My dad said that is all my mum did with my brother and sister - wash nappies.

I am tired I guess - Teabelly I don't like chocolate. I never have. I am sure I am missing the seratonin lift but I just don't like it. I am rather partial to white chocolate though however I don't feel this has the same benefits.

I put up a chest of drawers today with my dad Debated state school versus private school. I have almost completely decided to go private from 7. I think you get so lost in the state school system, they can't make you feel special about yourself with over 30 people in a class when you really might need encouragement. No dad will be difficult enough and I want to feel my little boy will have the attention and education everyone deserves. I was bullied terribly at State school and they just didn't care and only 2 people who I was friends with finished school.

I have just got back in from eating out at an Indian I should have been doing college work but my dad thought I needed cheering up. I'm going to take it easy for a few days. I'm worn out.

Is anyone else just going to get a travel cot? I wanted to get this amazing Tutti bambini cotbed from ebay. However I was going to get a travel cot too. One of my friends said she has just ended up keeping her little boy in the travel cot and never actually used the cot she bought - which needless to say he will soon have grown out of. I just can't picture myself wanting to put up a cotbed at a point anymore pregnant than this. I thought I would start off with a travel cot see how it went - I am borrowing a moses basket for a while. If I decide to get a proper cot I'll get it later and make do with the travel one until I know what I want to do. I have every intention of getting baby into his own room after the first little while; how can I be sure at this point I'll want to straight away so I'll leave it to see. A cotbed can be ordered at anytime. But I'd hate to get all broody and wasted a whole bunch on a tutti bambini cotbed.

Lipstick - Little boy loves Tori! he falls asleep when I put her on. He also likes Corelli. I am pleased as a life long violin player I am glad he is already developing good taste

Has anyone else noticed there are things the bump does and doesn't like? I am getting quite attached to him you know - I never thought I would. I was never the broody type. I rather like how he starts kicking when I sit down to watch a video at about 10.30pm

PinkArjuna · 01/02/2005 22:12

A crash Jonah I am glad you are ok.

PinkArjuna · 01/02/2005 22:15

Oh Jonah - I have a cadbury's christmas selection of chocolate bars just sitting here un eaten :O Sorry that was mean of me! what is waste to one is treasure to another...

Uwila · 01/02/2005 22:27

OMG, you couldn't pay me to use cloth nappies. God for the rest of you of course. But I am such the epitomy of woman of modern convenience. When dd was still using formula, I couldn't even bring myself to buy the powder and mix it myself. It had to come ready to pour. And if younight time formula feeders want to know the absolute laziest way, it is to buy pre mixed single serve cartons and don't heat it up. By the way, I did not do this... but I might this time. Will have to see how long the breast feeding lasts.

LipstickMum · 01/02/2005 22:29

Only 90 more minutes of being 31

charleypops · 01/02/2005 23:04

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LIPPY

Uwila · 02/02/2005 06:58

Or rather....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIPPY

JonahB · 02/02/2005 07:31

Morning All,

Thanks for all your kind words and chocolate offers. Feeling a bit better today. Sorry for offloading.

Happy Birthday Lippy!!! Hope you're doing something fun today!!!

Uwila, you make me laugh so much. A girl after my own heart. I'm a bit of a convenience vs time/effort management nutter myself. I would love to come on here and say i'm going to use cloth nappies, but its just not going to happen. I think i'll have enough to contend with without resorting to the smell and hassle of that.

tribpot · 02/02/2005 08:14

Happy birthday Lippy! You share a birthday with my esteemed step-father, who is not 32 today but 65.

Jonah - glad you're feeling better today.

Cloth nappies - we're going to try, haven't decided whether to buy or use a service. However, there'll be two of us at home full-time for the first six months at least, rather a different situation from most. It's just the thought of the landfill [shudder]. Mind you, as Pink says it's arguable whether you're consuming more resources by having the washer on 24*7 doing nappies.

katzguk · 02/02/2005 09:11

Happy Birthday Lippy

i am hoping to use my washables again but just because i have them, i wasn't religous about it last time used them most of the time but didn't beat myself up if DD was in disposables for a week!! helped that nursery would use them too. plus DD always went to bed in a disposable!

Just got confirmation of maternity leave back and i hadn't factored in 4 days bank holidays so i'm getting 4 more days off which for me is a week because i work 4 days a week offically. So i now return to work on the 22nd of December and the uni shuts down for Christmas on the 24th and doesn't reopen until the 3rd of Jan!! yeah!!

LipstickMum · 02/02/2005 09:24

I'm 32 Hoooorayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!

Don't feel too old, don't look too old, no new wrinkles either

Thank you for your well wishes. I have a lovely day planned. Taking dd to m&b group with a friend this morning. She'll sleep at lunchtime and I'll chat 130, lunch with a friend at our favourite hangout, then back to mine so the girls can play and we can eat the delicious chocolate birthday cake dp made for me last night Hopefully dp might make it for lunch too. Then, this evening, dp and I are off out to a posh restaurant - ta daaaaaaaaaaa!!

Washable nappies are great, but we aren't a slave to them by any means, I would say we use them 70% of the time. We always use disposables when out for the day or away from home. We have 20 Motherease which last from birth to toddler and I would say I was about 10 at a time, that's 2, maybe 3 washes a week. We do have a separate drier though and I wouldn't do it if we didn't!!! I don't know if the extra energy use is worse than the impact of nappies that never (?) degrade, or at best take 100 years.

It's such a routine for us now, it's almost no effort, but, let's face it disposables are a great advancement for womankind not to be sniffed at!

Pink posted last night re: state vs private schools that she was going to choose the latter based on her experiences at school among other reasons I expect. Dare we have a state vs private debate God I'm contraversial today!!!

teabelly · 02/02/2005 09:25

Morning all,

Lippy HAPPY BIRTHDAY

No don't go all philosophical on me today - I much prefer the naughty/silly/embarrassing talk!

I'm another disposable nappy fan...and no plans to change with number 2.

Pink - not like chocolate ...sorry...I don't understand the concept, he he he! On the travel cots...we bought one for ds, but bth he hated it and whenever we went anywhere he wouldn't sleep in it, so always ended up in our bed...although the little blighter loved it as a play pen and during the day would happily play in it for an hour or more!

Katz - great news re the mat leave

Jonah, glad the crash wasn't physically bad for you...was there much damage??

Mirage fab news on the home birth...you're much braver than me...and I really wouldn't fancy the clearing up afterwards

LipstickMum · 02/02/2005 09:29

Back to talk about Brazilians and 'trimming' then ??

teabelly · 02/02/2005 09:30

...or maybe I could tell you all about how I managed to tuck my skirt into my tights yesterday...twice...and no-one in the office told me!!! he he he!

katzguk · 02/02/2005 09:34

lipstick - sounds likes a great day!

Pink - travel cots we bought one for DD when she was about 6 months and from about 12months she slept in it as her main bed because she was a wiggler and would bang her head on the wooden bars. If you do intend on just buying a travel cot i would recommend buying one that is the same size as a regular cot, we put DD regular matress in it. and had a special thinner normal mattress for travelling DD hated the crinkly fabric of the travel cot mattress once we switched to a proper mattress in the travel cot she slept much better.Ours is a Hauck one can look up the model numebr for you if you'd like, one other plus point of it is that it longer than the square ones so DD could still sleep in it now aged 2¼.
