Hi gals,

Have had a fab day today, my parents and sister with family came up for the day to continue my birthday celebrations. We had a fab, bang it in the oven, low preparation Saturday lunch cooked by moi Now all I need is a small snack to tide me over.

Pink I bailed last night, but just wanted to reply to your feelings about your son's sex..! It seems that today you're happier about having a boy which is great. Maybe we worry about it too much..? I don't think your feelings were uncommon tbh, I think you'll be a brilliant mum whether you had a son or daughter.

Which leads me onto my pathetic, ongoing "shall we find out the sex or not?" dilema. Above everything I would like to point out that I want a happy, healthy baby. What happened with Sweetheart's son, brings me back to reality with a bump when I find myself moaning about cute, girly dresses versus unwanted erections You know what I mean. However, it's still an issue for me and has been for some of you others too.

Thanks for your advice Tea and Uwila. I was kind of hoping that the 'wonder of birth' would eradicate any possible disappointment, but I can't guarantee that can I? I could still feel disappointed no matter how hard I try and I would hate that. So at the moment it's 60% sure I'll find out. 20% sure whether I'll spill the beans tho Although, I may have too if I need cheering up!

Tessie, your +ve reasons for changing your son's school look brilliant to me. I'm sure they'll be every bit as successful and happy at the new village school. Just think of all the ski-ing holidays you can now afford ! Commuting 10 minutes instead of an hour, my god Dp and I have a bee in our bonnets about commuting. We are lucky enough that both our jobs mean we can be employed wherever we want and can therefore minimise commuting entirely. Dp drives 15 minutes against the flow to get to work. It's just a waste of time and time of something you can never get back. Good luck to you!

Tribpot and Bubbaloo, you're both having scans on Tuesday?? Either of you finding out what the sex is? Mine is the following day and then Tessie's next monday, which I think is about all...??

charleypops · 05/02/2005 21:17

Pink - I've been living in my Playboy jogging outfit. Whilst I'm glad you like yours, I must say I'm a bit disappointed - the legs go all baggy at the knees and round the bum after I've worn them for an hour or so after washing them, so I don't really like to go out in them. They've also started to look a bit "bobbly" I didn't think they'd do this cos they were so damn expensive (they're not knock offs either )

Tessie - it must be really frustrating being last - I was desperate to get my scan done! I was also thinking that by the law of averages, I must be having a girl Maybe there's a thread at the moment full of little girls to be

Welcome back Trib! I was hoping for a break with dp myself next week, but he's just gone and booked in some work .

Bubs, let us know what you thought of the film (no plot or ending though of course!) I just LOVED the first one.

bubbaloo · 06/02/2005 00:24

well ive just got back from seeing the film-its really funny and better than the first one.we tried at 1pm to get tickets for the 8.30 showing and it was sold out and only just managed to get in to the 9.30 one-well worth seeing!!!
lipstick,we DEFINATELY want to know the sex of the baby-if its got its legs closed i shall scream-
i still reckon its an "oscar" whereas dh is still saying its a "poppy" so not long to go to find out-yipeeeeeeee.

charleypops · 06/02/2005 00:40

Glad you enjoyed it - I can't wait! Think I'll book on the phone though....

Scraggyaggy · 06/02/2005 07:44

Morning all. I feel terrible today, perhaps I?ve caught it from Cobweb? We went to watch the rugby yesterday (only at the pub) so I had a pint and a white wine spritzer through the evening (felt a bit tiddly, so started feeling quite guilty), then we had a Chinese take-away and straight to bed. Well, I was waking up every half an hour gasping for water, and had a small tummy ache, so I thought I?d overdone the alcohol and really felt guilty, but then it dawned on me at 4am that I was not in desperate need for a wee? despite having drunk several pints of water. So the guilt trip got worse as I imagined that baby must?ve been guzzling all the water trying to dilute the alcohol?. Well, no it?s far worse than that, I have been hit by the most amazing bout of diarrhoea imaginable (sorry). Anyone know any good remedies?

Katz ? We are going to have to see who out-bump?s the other at our meeting. Mine is practically non-existent too. All DPs work colleagues were gob-smacked last night when they asked when the baby was due! They don?t believe me!!!

Lippy ? Go on, just buy a little something and see how you get on. You?ll get the bug!

Jonah ? Am v jealous. DP still claims not to have felt baby kick, although sometimes it feels as though I?m being booted full force. Maybe soon, when it gets bigger.

Uwila ? I had a v strange dream about you last night!!! I met you in a canteen type place with another person and you told me you were having TWINS, but to keep it secret? now, what?s all that about?

Pink ? How did your Bristol MN meet go?

Cobweb ? Look at this link specifically for agency workers Agency workers

Trib ? Glad you had a nice time in Amsterdam ? isn?t it freezing over there this time of year? I went for Valentine?s a few years ago and froze to death. My geography is terrible so I didn?t realise that they are more North than us.

Scraggyaggy · 06/02/2005 07:45

I have mastered the art of putting on a link Yippee!

LipstickMum · 06/02/2005 08:40

Scraggs, Sorry to hear you have an upset tummy, at least you lot won the rugby - just!!
I wouldn't worry about the amount of alcohol you consumed yesterday. Feeling de-hydrated could well have been a result of the alcohol, especially as you are not used to it at the moment. However, my guess is, it was the Chinese that did it. They do use a lot of salt and MSG in their food. Dp and I always feel thirsty after a CHinese no matter how much we hydrate with water beforehand. That's why dp often wont let us have them, the affect him more than me

That's probably what's given you a dodgy tummy too. I don't know what to recommend to help with the diarrhoea, defitnitley drink lots of water as you could get even more dehydrated. Eat some high fibre foods and wait for it to pass, hopefully not more than 24 hours. Any longer and I would check with the midwife or doc, but I doubt it will come to that.

JonahB · 06/02/2005 08:41

Scraggy/Katz,

I reckon i'll outbump the pair of you. I feel enormous, although I suspect out of politeness you'll both disagree......

LipstickMum · 06/02/2005 08:42

I forgot to mention that I said to dp last night "I htink we should find out the sex of the baby" and he said "ok".

That was that. So at the moment we are finding out!!

But, not telling!!!
How mean are we???

katzguk · 06/02/2005 08:58

Scraggy - unless my bump suddendly grows huge i'm sure i'll win the smallest bump award. I get the same reaction, 'you can't be due at the beginning of june -july at the earliest'!! Still wearing my old 'fat' clothes only really wearing the maternity stuff to try and make a bump out of nothing!! i'm wearing my mothercare maternity work torusers on the not pregnant setting!! ie zip fully done up!! and they're only a size 12 i normally wear a 14!!

Glad to here you've all had good weekends.

I've still got my cold three weeks plus and counting!! went to the GP on friday to beg for something to take to stop me coughing and spluttering but to no avail!

Tessiebear · 06/02/2005 09:12

Morning all!
Lippy - surely telling US doesnt count!!!!

Charley - apparently there is a Due in March thread where they are practically ALL expecting girls!! - there is your law of averages i suppose!!!

Pink- my DS's are 7 and 4. BTW you are a first time mum PLEASE do not feel guilty if you decide to use disposable nappies. I am on no.3 and have NO shame whatsoever about using them again for the third time. I know all the environmental advantages to using washable nappies blah blah .. but i have enough washing etc to do ANYWAY and i just know that it would be too much extra work for me personally. Sorry if everyone else is using washables I think it is one of those choices that has to be right for you and your lifestyle..... the same way as some people eat meat some people dont ..... noone should condemn either person for their decision [steps down from soap box and tiptoes off to tidy the house]

Scraggyaggy · 06/02/2005 09:49

Have rung NHS direct and they got a doctor at the local hospital clinic to call me. Good news is that it won't affect baby as long as I keep my fluids up - phew! And, now I am more relaxed, I am starting to feel better

Lippy - Funny you should mention the MSG, that is EXACTLY what the doctor said.

Katz - Hmmmm. I've got a feeling we are about the same size then. Are your maternity trousers the black ones with the zips on either side? If so, then I've got the same ones, but mine are a 10 and in the last week I have had to unzip one side about an inch and a half, although saying that I discovered the seam coming apart along the bottom area fro having worn them so much so maybe mine have stretched!!

Jonah - I wish my bump was bigger, I really do! I get no special treatment at all at the moment from the general public! I think DP wants my belly to get bigger too, as when he hasn't seen me for a couple of days, he tends to proudly compliment me on my belly!!

So, now Lippy is finding out too, is there ANYONE else who isn't finding out apart from me?? Am going to have to go look at the stats thread....

tribpot · 06/02/2005 09:57

Morning all!

Scraggy - I don't think Amsterdam is north of here - I had a look on the Beeb website and it seems to be on more or less the same latitude as Northampton Having said that, it was quite cold but then again this time last year I was still living in Sweden so the fact the sea doesn't freeze here is a novelty for me!

Bubbaloo - best of luck for Tuesday. Sounds awful but I wish I was going private for this scan as well. I've just read so many awful tales on here about people being given half a story and then sent away I'd like to know that whatever news there is was going to be presented to me sympathetically. Well, I'll keep fingers crossed and if I'm not happy I'll just book a private scan in Cambridge.

Lippy - we are going to find out the sex if we can, but I probably won't be telling people in real life (I will tell MN though!).

bubbaloo · 06/02/2005 11:05

morning,
scraggy-i had dreadful upset tummies at the beginning of this pregnancy and my dr just told me not to eat anything except chicken and boiled rice and to drink lots of lucazade sport which i thought was really strange but it did the trick, although the lucazade was very sweet.
im really used to upset tummies because of all my food intollerances but for the past few months i've actually been really constipated which has made a really nice change
sorry to hear you've still got your cold katz-im surprised i havent caught dh's one!
my dr gave me some iron tablets the other week and they upset my tummy again so i stopped taking them after a few days and ive got another lot(pregaday)reday to try-which im going to start next week, when im not on the early shift at work(just in case!!!).
tessie, ive also seen that thread with all the girls due-seems really spooky that we're nearly all boys and they're nearly all girls
lipstick, how can you find out the sex and then keep it a secret-i wouldn't be able to keep quiet long enough

megi · 06/02/2005 11:45

Scraggy - I have had my scan I didn't find out the sex. I have to have another one at 34 weeks cos the placanta is a bit low - Am I right in thinking this could rectify itself? I sorta assumed it would when I was in the scan room so stupidly didn't ask. .
However - I am really, really certain I am having a girl - but have no concrete evidence to support my claim!!!!

Uwila · 06/02/2005 11:46

Scraggy -- I think that dream says more about you than it does about me. I'v enot had three scans this pregnancy. Always ask them to confirm that there is only one in there. All three have chuckled, and said "yes, just one" or something to that effect.

DD and I are off to a soft play centre today to meet some toddler boys. I've talked to their mums on e-mail, but we haven't met them yet. So it sould be fun... DD and her harem.

Alright Lippy, after all of the advice and support we have given you (not to mention sharing our news with you) you better tell us the sex. Mumsnet does not count as the real world. We have special priviledges here. Same goes for you Welshie!

Oh cobbers, I don't know what to say that others haven't already said. I guess it make my complaints about realising my planned three month mat leave will dwindle down to two pales in comparison to nothing at all. So sorry to hear this. And it makes it no easier when you get people saying a new mother really should stay home for 12 months... blah blah ablah. Yeah, okay, and whose going to pay the electric bill. If anyone does that to you (especially if it is a man) you can smack him. When I was still on my extremely short maternity leave with DD, I went into the office to go to a meeting when she was 3 weeks old. Another guy asked where she was, and I said childminder. He gave another guy next to him a macho friendly kind of should nudge and said "Did you here that? Three weeks old and already at the childminder." Two years later it STILL pisses me off. Then, several months later I transferred departments which was sort of a lateral move but more likely to be viewed as a promotion. And suddenly he wanted to be my buddy... FAT CHANCE.

Anyway, sorry for going off on a tangent. I just wanted you to know that I sypathise. If you have to go back to work sooner rather than later, then so be it. And don't let anyone make you feel guilty for being fiscally responsible. My dd is a very well adjusted, happy, and bright toddler. My work hours don't appear to have harmed her in any way. In fact she went to achildmender so soon that she never had to endure a traumitc experience of suddenly adjust to mummy leaving her with a stranger for the day. By the time she was old enough to notice, she was already used to it.

Uwila · 06/02/2005 11:54

Megi,
I have the same thing. Booked in for another scan at 36 weeks. You sonographer is, in my opinion, a bit negligent in not explaining to you that is probably fine. My placenta is slightly covering the cervix. She told me not to worry because the uterous will do most of it's stretching at the bottom, which in turn with push the placenta up away from the cervix. She said booking me in for a 36 week scan is just a precaution. I'm not really worried about it.

Of course, it the placenta is still blocking baby's exit, then they would likely go for caesarean. But, that doesn't matter in my case because I want a ceasarean anyway. So if it slides down and then the have to do a casarean I would be perfectly happy, but that isn't likely. So, I'll be going into the consultant to bed for that elective just after my scan.

charleypops · 06/02/2005 12:28

Jonah - I shouldn't worry about Scraggy being too polite on the size of your bump - if it's big, she'll tell you!

Tessie, lol at the March thread! And re nappies - having a baby is "inconvenient" in our work centered and busy society, and as a (although peripheral ) part of that myself If I choose to use washables, I would never critisise anyone for not using disposables

Scraggy - I'm sure your baby's fine - they're very resilient - it sounds as though your body's done a very efficient job at keeping the alcohol away from baby. I know how you feel though - I felt overwhelmingly guilty after having a phal a few weeks ago

OP posts:
LipstickMum · 06/02/2005 15:00

Errr what's a phal Charley??

Ok, Ok, I will consult with dp to see if it's ok to tell MN the sex of the baby, I would feel mean not telling you. Thing is, we wouldn't be telling in real life and I'm not sure of my anonymity on here.

Glad you've stopped worrying Scraggy, told you it would be that pesky MSG and I didn't even consult with dp coz he was at the gym

charleypops · 06/02/2005 17:05

Hi Lippy! a phal (sometimes spelt "pal" is the hottest curry you can get. It's often not even on the menu. It's usuallly only ever eaten by blokes who've had too much lager and are doing it for a dare

Oo, I do hope you tell us the sex of your bump!

OP posts:
PinkArjuna · 06/02/2005 17:37

Lippy you absolutely have to find out. We all want to know. I am glad you have tentatively decided to go for it. I don't seem to mind now. It goes in phases I think. The realisation a new human child is coming along makes me panick a think. But I am glad I have had time to adjust.

As to bumps. One day mine is small then the next it is huge. Though I think it is average on the whole. I think it depends where bubba is lying. When I had the scan he was facing the front but had a fist in my bladder cos the little bugger was lying sideways across the front of my tummy Honestly - takes after his mummy has to be stubborn and awkward. However mine seems to get alot bigger by the end of the day when I have water retention built up and also depending on if I've cough been to the loo. I bought lineseeds the other day and I am into seed eating now. I think getting bunged up makes the bump a bit bigger cos you are carrying about 5 days food too

I was reading last night that if you eat hot food alot the baby will get used to the taste in the amniotic fluid. Apprently if you change what you eat after the birth the baby will not definately like the breast milk cos it will taste different. I only eat sweet stuff once in a while cos I don't really like it and I worry about my teeth specially now with bleeding gums. I live on Thai noodles so I think bubba is used to Chilli. Though I must confess I have eaten nothing as hot as a Madras let alone a vindaloo or Phal - I had never heard of a phal. Good Gawd it must be hot. My Indian friends didn't really know all about the Curry names apprently that is a British thing developed so you recognise what you like to eat, though I am told Tandoori is a way of cooking.

Oh I love Indian food. I used to love spending time at my Mate Priyanka's house, there is no way of cooking a curry apart from chucking things in a pot over a day or so. We used to have curry weekends when I was in College where we were supposed to study but always sat round watching video's and trying her mums cooking. I think the only thing I specify for my future is an Indian husband who is also the most inspired culinary genious that has stepped out of the Punjab

PinkArjuna · 06/02/2005 17:50

Oh my Belly Bra arrived there may be hope for my back yet life saver for big bumps

Scraggy - forgot to say, my meet was really nice, I met up with Bunni who lives near here. We'll probably meet again soon and another mumsnetter will come too but her little girl was teething and couldn't come this time. I waddled around and looked at the toys in the early learning centre. How come all the ones I like aren't for new borns

charleypops · 06/02/2005 17:54

Pink you must STOP talking about Indian food I really want one now!! I sensibly went for a butter chicken dish on Friday, which is the original one I started out on when I was first introduced to curries. It was yum (I did ask for extra chillies though at the last min )

Are the linseeds working? What was that other stuff you have? Lactulose or something? I've got to sort myself out in that department

When I was at uni, I had an Indian friend who lived at home. Her mum would send her in with gorgeous packed lunches for me

OP posts:
Uwila · 06/02/2005 18:22

Charley,
Where do you go for Indian. I love Indian food. I never had it before coming to Britain, and now I'm definitely hooked. When we lived in Epsom we used to go to Le Raj, but it's a bit far now. I think there is supposed to be a good place in East Moseley but wouldn't have any idea what it is called. Thought you might know?

bubbaloo · 06/02/2005 18:29

are they the crushed linseeds pink?
im also into "seeds" and eat heaps of sesame and sunflower seeds but i know you have to be a little careful with linseed/flax seed and only eat a couple of spoonfuls a day otherwise they give you the runs.was actually told the crushed ones are better but they are more expensive!
ive also never heard of a phal.i love indian but only a tikka/shaslik as im not keen on the sauces.having a really healthy dinner tonight of stuffed peppers and noodles then fresh berries and pancakes to follow,so i better go and check on it
