Lua · 04/02/2005 15:44

A friend of my cousin just delivered her twins today...
Are you ready? - 7lbs each!!!! Can you imagine how big she must have been? I'll keep that in mind anytime I feel like complaining how big I am.

BTW I am really happy for her since last time I was pregannt she was also pregannt but end up loosing her baby at 7 months.

megi · 04/02/2005 15:59

Lippy I have a pair of Earl jeans - I love them! They are normal - ie non-maternity jeans and I live in them. They are the only pair of normal jeans I own which I can still get into. I reckon I have 2 weeks max left in them though!

Uwila · 04/02/2005 16:01

Thanks guys for your views on the snip dilemma. Pink, haven't seen that episode. But having built a life that straddles the pond, I can imagine the dialogue. I do definitely think though that if it is to be done, then it should be done as a very young infant. In the US, it would be done before you leave hospital. I think it's more traumatic and more painful later on. Also, he might remember the pain later on.

Anyway, thanks again for your input. I guess I still have a few months to decide. There is a clinic in london that offers a consultation for undecided parents to learn more about the procedure. We go do that.

#oh, I wish Charley would come back. I'm dying to read her news.

bubbaloo · 04/02/2005 16:47

scraggy-congrats on your scan-glad everythings okand jonah thats great new about the kick!
ive still only had one kick so its nice to know theres someone else in the same position
hope your scan went well charley and hope everyone has a nice weekend

Uwila · 04/02/2005 17:11

I think the autors of all those book that tell how exciting it will be in week 14-20 when you feel those first kicks should be shot. Then, they add some rubbish about how if it isn't your first it could be even sooner. Just freaks us out when it doesn't happen... or we aren't sure if it happened. It's terrible. I can feel them now, pretty much dail. But, I'm due 29 May so a bit ahead of most of you. Don't worry about not feeling kicks yet.

LipstickMum · 04/02/2005 17:23

Hurry up Charleyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

Uwila · 04/02/2005 17:25

Bet she's celebrating in the shops... seven minutes 'til closing.

Actually, after poor Sweetheart, I worry when someone doesn't run back with good news.

SO GET ON WITH IT, CHARLEY! What flavour is the penguin?

LipstickMum · 04/02/2005 17:35

I know Uwila, after I posted that, I regretted it, thinking the same thing. But my hope is she's in John Lewis

Uwila · 04/02/2005 17:42

She'll probably have 2 prams if she doesn't get out soon.

Sent her text message to tell her we are anxiously awaiting news on mumsnet.

Uwila · 04/02/2005 17:49

Phew... no worries. Heard back from her. But, I'll let her share the details. She'll be on soon. She's walking the dog now.

PinkArjuna · 04/02/2005 17:58

So I pootled around Bristol, bought myself some oils to burn, I need to relax and thought I'd treat myself. I got home picked up the oil burner, promptly dropped it and its broken

Come on Charley... aren't you back yet?? I have been refreshing the page waiting on the news

Just popping in quick to say congrats to Scraggy and Charley on the good news from their scans...well well another boy...someone hurry up and announce another girl or my little one will have no-one to play with!!

teabelly · 04/02/2005 18:30

Oh Lippy I hope you're right about your it's a girl feeling - maybe you'd better find out next week just to make sure

PinkArjuna · 04/02/2005 18:49

Congrats on your boy Charley
I study English Language and Literature. However the course today was on the changing face of feminism. I was looking forward to it.

Well I just got another oil burner for £3.99 so I am in a better mood now

JonahB · 04/02/2005 19:04

Congratulations Charley!!!!

Uwila, I'm right behind you on the kicking thing. It does make you panic when you hit 23 weeks and feel nothing. Not funny at all.

Anyway, just ordered the curry, bought in the chocoate and rented a DVD. A perfect night in....

have a good weekend all...

Cobweb · 04/02/2005 19:18

Hi all I am having a bad time at the moment so I haven't been on for a few days.

We have all been ill in the family, which started with a stomach bug with both DS's and then DH and I got mild symptoms. Now both DS's have streaming colds and I just feel like crying all the time.

Hope its just the hormones but feel right down in the dumps. Keep feeling sick and gone off food.

Sorry to moan but I know its the one place where everyone will understand.

Also I went back to work in November and have been told my the agency that I work for that I am not entitled to SMP and don't know what I do now. I have been told there is Maternity Benefit - just wondered if anyone here knew anything about it.

Good to see you all and for all the baby scan updates.

Tessie hunnie don't worry yourself too much on the schooling issue. Children are so adaptable and I am sure after a couple of weeks they will settle down.

Love to you all xxx

Lua · 04/02/2005 19:24

Congrats charley!!!
Unbelievable... another boy! As I said before, we will all learn together what to do with little boys equipment!

katzguk · 04/02/2005 19:25

cobweb SMP definition from the personnel pages where i work hope it helpful:

  1. Statutory Maternity Provision 3.1 Statutory Maternity Leave All pregnant staff members, regardless of length of service or hours of work, are entitled to 26 weeks' ordinary maternity leave (OML). All conditions of service, except for pay, will be maintained during this leave

Members of staff who have completed 26 weeks' continuous service with the University at the beginning of the 14th week before the EWC are entitled to 26 weeks' additional maternity leave (AML) which begins at the end of OML. Whilst the contract of employment continues throughout AML, there is no statutory entitlement to receive pay from the University.

3.2 Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP)
To qualify for SMP a pregnant staff member must satisfy all of the following conditions:

have been continuously employed by the University for at least 26 weeks at the 15th week before the EWC. (The 15th week before the EWC is known as the qualifying week.)

have average weekly earnings in the eight weeks up to and including the qualifying week which are at least equal to the lower earnings limit for the payment of National Insurance contributions (i.e. above £76 per week from April 2002)

be pregnant at the 11th week before the EWC (or have had the baby by that time)

have stopped working for the University due to her forthcoming birth.
A staff member is required to notify the University at least 28 days in advance of the date that she wishes to the payment of SMP to start, via the Department of Human Resources - Personnel Services, unless this is not reasonably practicable.

Provided that all conditions in 3.2. have been satisfied, a staff member will be entitled to receive:

an earnings-related element equivalent to 90% of her full salary for 6 weeks; and

a flat rate payment for a further 20 weeks, which is the lesser of SMP standard rate - (£100 per week at the time of writing) or 90% of the woman's average weekly earnings.
These payments will be made via the University payroll, subject to income tax, national insurance and pension contributions (if a member).

SMP is only payable when the staff member is absent from work on maternity leave. If the staff member does any work in any particular week she is disqualified from receiving SMP for that week.

Payment of SMP commences on the Sunday following the day on which she last worked before starting her maternity leave.

A qualifying staff member may continue to work right up until the date her baby is born and still retain her full 26 week entitlement to SMP.

3.3 Maternity Allowance (MA)
If a staff member is not entitled to SMP she may make an application for Maternity Allowance for a maximum of 26 weeks. Staff members wishing to claim MA should ask for an MA claim pack at their Jobcentre Plus/Social Security Office.

Entitlement to MA is based upon the staff member's employment and earnings in the 66 weeks ending with the week before the EWC.

The MA weekly rate is the lesser of the MA standard rate (£100 at the time of writing) or 90% of the woman's average weekly earnings.

MA is paid by the Benefits Agency directly to the individual, and not via the University payroll.

3.4 What are my entitlements to Statutory Maternity Pay and Leave?
Each individual's entitlement will be dependent upon her particular situation, as follows:

Staff members who do not wish to return to work following the birth:

with less than 26 weeks continuous service by the 15th week before the EWC, staff members must personally apply for Maternity Allowance.

with at least 26 weeks continuous service by the 15th week before the EWC and earnings throughout this period of not less than the lower earnings limit for National Insurance contributions, staff members will be eligible for SMP.
Staff members who wish to return to work following the birth:

with less than 26 weeks continuous service by the 15th weeks before the EWC, staff members will be eligible for 26 weeks maternity leave, but must personally apply for Maternity Allowance.

with 26 to 36 weeks continuous service with the University by the 15th week before the EWC, staff members are entitled to 26 weeks maternity leave and SMP (provided all conditions in 3.2.1 are met).

Staff members with 52 weeks continuous service by the EWC who plan to return to work after maternity leave are eligible to the preferential benefits of the University maternity leave scheme (see Section 2).
Staff members who are uncertain of their maternity leave entitlements should contact the Department of Human Resources - Personnel Services to discuss their individual situation.

Lippy I think the feelings thing is quite valid. I wanted a girl more than a boy (if I had to choose) but I was pretty resigned to bubba being a boy. The science of sperm survival and waking up in the night dreaming of meat. Plus at 8 weeks or so when the male hormone kicks in I noticed a radical change in my moods towards being more aggressive than usual. Though sometimes people really tell themselves it one thing or another. Though you do have a 50% chance of being right.

Louise a woman from my Yoga group has been calling it a boy even though her and hubby haven't found out. Infact none of my yoga group have found out. I don't know how they can wait. Though most of them seem to be calling the bumps boys - whats with that? I bet they'll be quite despairing if they have girls getting into the whole boy thing.

Oh I dunno, now I'm having a boy for sure I feel rather pevish that I'm not having a little girl. The thought of a teenage boy scares the hell out of me. Does anyone else feel like that?

PinkArjuna · 04/02/2005 19:31
