Newborn refuses to nap HELP

ImmyJ36 · 09/09/2024 10:22

our 4 week old baby boy sleeps well at night (getting about 3.5 hours between feeds overnight) but during the day, has one 3 hour nap and then from about 3pm will not go down to sleep. Yesterday we had a 7 hour wake window, despite dark room, soothing for hours- is this normal? I’m actually worried! He of course then gets overtired and fussy. Has anyone else experienced this? TIA
im a first time mum and have no idea what I’m doing.

My baby was very similar. It was because she just wanted to cluster feed and nap on the breast and she also had CMPA.

However some babies do have lower sleep needs.

Almost identical to my baby. She's now 10 weeks and improving but did get worse from 5.5 weeks - 8 weeks where it was almost impossible to get her to nap and she was overtired and crying a lot.

Night sleeping always been great, she has been able to sleep through since 7 weeks (but doesn't always).

Since about 9 weeks we've found her daytime naps and mood in general have been better when she sleeps longer at night. We've been putting her down at approx 7.30pm and she's sleeping until 8am with one wake to feed. When she does this, she's usually having a nap for 1-1.5hrs at 10am, similar at 2ish and a shorter nap at 5ish.

Sounds similar to mine. From about 7 weeks to maybe 4 or 5 months I could only get her to nap in the baby carrier, singing and patting her bottom as we walked, hat pulled down low, and my other hand on the back of her head, holding her close to my chest.

I found it so unspeakably stressful.

Maybe try some different sleep places - my first born absolutely hated her moses basket for example but napped well in the carrycot of her pram.
She also never slept in a car whereas I my sister used to drive around with my niece as the car was where she slept best
