Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
miamla · 10/03/2008 22:00

LofW hmm hadn't thought about aromatherapy, i'll add it to the list

as for birthing balls..i suspect i won't be allowed one for fear of endangering myself or someone who happens to get too close while i'm bouncing!

TwilightSurfer · 11/03/2008 01:49

miamla...funny, "nothing can hurt worse than breaking your back"...try squeezing a watermelon out your . Childbirth hurts like nothing you could imagine. Not to scare, you can gain control of it (most of it...some of it...okay a little of it) with meds or meditation. I did both (meds and meditation). I honestly expected to be able to overcome it all...you see I have a HIGH pain threshhold. Boy was I WRONG. Water broke at 1am, contractions were good but tolerable until 8AM at which time I pressed the little bedside button and told the nurse I wanted to discuss the epidural thingy (she had tried to chat with me about it around 7am and I dismissed her). I honestly thought I was going to claw my way up the wall with each contraction. The epidural was AMAZING. I slept through most of the transition period. Three refills later I was ready to push DD out. The epidural worked perfectly up to that point......

DD had a better afternoon. She napped for 4 hours. She's still not quite herself emotionally and I'm beginning to wonder if it's her antibiotic. Will be on the phone first thing to ask her pediatrician.

As for me, I'm having some discomfort. I'm either growing again or LO is pressing on things that she shouldn't. I have pelvic floor pressure. Anybody else feeling anything similar??

libbyssister · 11/03/2008 07:58

When I was in labour with DS the midwife offered me a peppermint foot bath and it was heavenly. She rubbed my feet and it took my mind off the contractions a bit, just shifted my concentration elsewhere, which was a relief.

I could do with one now, actually.

I am still plagued by migraines at the moment Got the flashing lights last night (in my head, I didn't dial 999 )and I woke up with a dull ache which is going to get worse through the day. Boo. GP has give me some tablets which help but I can't wait til this delightful stage is over...

Anyway, moan moan moan, Morning everyone!

VintageGardenia · 11/03/2008 08:20

LS I am so sorry you still having such bad headaches. What are the tablets the GP gave you?

The peppermint foot bath sounds fantastic, did you happen to give birth in a luxury maternity spa? I can't imagine the midwives / nurses at my last hospital doing anything so gorgeous.

Actually, speaking of feet and heads, what about booking yourself some reflexology, tell the therapist it's to help with the headaches. I had some last week and it was gorgeous and did help with a lower back pain I'd been trying to ignore.

And even if you're not into reflexology have a look at the amazing image at the bottom of this page

VintageGardenia · 11/03/2008 08:23

I mean this page

VintageGardenia · 11/03/2008 08:24

Sorry I don't know why that's not working but if you click on maternal reflexology the image is there, though I am beginning to wish I'd never mentioned it.

Buckets · 11/03/2008 08:26

A MW once told me the best labour she ever saw was a teenage girl who knelt on the bed and imagined trying to blow out a candle at the end of it for each contraction. The MW said it was really peaceful and she hardly had to do a thing herself.

My labour experience was so painful I was grateful for the general anaesthetic at the end! Am starting to chicken out about VBAC and just go for elective earlier than 40wks.

Libbyssister, poor you. I've not had a migraine yet this pregnancy, had them a week or so after birth last time. Mine tend to be related to stress release but yours sound pretty damn hormonal!

libbyssister · 11/03/2008 08:41

I was just in the John Radcliffe in Oxford but our midwife, Natalie, was an angel sent from heaven. She was lovely and I cried everytime she left the room! . I'm not saying that I got through labour on a foot rub alone, I'm sure the gas and air was helping too but I remember it being a real change of pace for half an hour when I was about 7/8 cm dilated.

That photo is kinda freeeking me out VG

Apparently the migraines will stop at around 20 weeks. I've got paracetamol/codeine tablets which seem to do the job. But some reflexology would be lovely...

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 10:14

morning all
dentist phoned and cancelled as off sick - yipee, now rearranged till 3rd april after best friend has been for visit and after scan tomorrow so am pleased. am not in any pain so its not desperate to get it done!!

rain and wind seem to have stopped for moment so will get on with some stuff for college and meet friend for coffee before getting girls from nursery

hope everyone well

alittlebitshy · 11/03/2008 10:19

Poor you Ls. I've never had a migraine (thanks God, knocks wood, crosses fingers, prostrates self in supplication) but they sound dreadful.

Twilight I'm having odd pelvic pressure too.....

Oh wow - a peppermint foot treatment. Yes please!!

miamla this is so freaky - we MUST meet up!! (are you working?? When do you go on mat leave?)

Funny that buckets should say that about the girl and the candle blowing analogy. I was have coffee with a group of mums from school yesterday and one mum was saying that with her second she tried some hypno birthing that involved visualising blue ribbons flapping (i must say i looked a bit like and didnt get the jist of it when she was talking) and that her ds2 basically slid out no probs, no pain relief . I'm still fingers crossed that they'll give me an elctive section though . I'm not sure I'm a ribbons kind of gal... esp after my last birth.

Back to my dusting (via the kitchen where I have some sustenance in the form of mini eggs waiting).

Grr door bell JUST rang. Bloke from church very offronted that i don't know where my dh is and when he'll be back. I rather sing songily said "I'm not his secretary". FGS!!!!! I do know when he'll be back cos he has to be back when i go out to home group cos we're waiting for the boiler man to come and service the boiler, but i'm not owning up to that. lol. Ach the trials of being a vicar's wife. On top of all these scarlett women from the August board being on the rampage for him .

TwilightSurfer · 11/03/2008 13:48

LS I've been living with headaches for a least two months now. They are boarderline migraine...the strength right before the spots. Doc offered meds to help but I've found caffine works so declined. I'm not a caffine person as a matter of fact I've been avoiding it at all cost for 20 years. But I had a real coke with lunch a while back and noticed the headache disappeared. Since then I try to have about 6 ounces in the morning and maybe 4 ounces in the afternoon. Seems to work and doctor agreed as many headache meds have caffine in them.

Well I've expanded more and now can no longer fit into my favorite pants!! DH just laughed. I found a pair of Levi's on Sunday that fit nicely at the waist but I don't like the bootleg cut. Oh well, just a few more weeks until I won't need them anymore anyway.

Considering going for a swim today. {{Correction: Considering going to float in the warm therapy pool while DD swims.}} Haven't phoned her pediatrician yet...we slept late so a little behind in morning routine.

Pinchypants · 11/03/2008 14:20

OMG I haven't been on here for six days and has just taken an hour to catch up! Hello everyone. Today I have had sex AND a Burger King. It's been a good day so far!

Also I am Very Comfortable at last cos my Next delivery arrived and I can indeed confirm that the over-bump jeans are officially the best in the world.
Got bag down from loft from last time round and there is sod-all in it and I hate everything, so also 'invested' (ahem) in some tops from various sources inc a gorgeous green wrap top from Isabella Oliver. It was stupidly expensive but it's nice to have one non-hideous top.

Has anyone else found that the moment they started wearing maternity clothes they actually looked and felt pg for the first time? If I wear normal jeans and tops I just look normal but a bit overweight (not to mention not being able to sit down...), but in my maternity clothes I look, er, properly pregnant.

Cannot believe mentions of hospital bags and announcement cards. Am in awe. Had first yoga sesh last Thurs and was bliss. And will be starting natal hypnotherapy CD tonight - it really helped last time, as did TENS. Am not that much of a lentil weaver, honest...

PetitFilou1 · 11/03/2008 14:20

Miamla Don't worry about the birth, it is the looking after the baby/child forever afterwards that you need to worry about! I gave birth to both previous dcs with no pain relief, no gas and air, nothing. One took 7 1/2 hours , the other 2 1/2 hours. Not saying it didn't bloody hurt. It did. I had no plan to do it that way, just did! It was great knowing the exact moment that dd was coming out without having to be told as I knew the sensation from before (think a very strong burning/stretching feeling). I still think I should have a medal but that is my own private thing and I think I was partly getting back at my mum who said her pain threshold was higher than mine and that's why SHE had managed it without help!

I've had a big leap in my blood pressure over the past three weeks and getting a bit breathless when pushing the dcs up hills (when I used to manage fine) and GP suspects anaemia but could also be to do with the stress of moving house/not getting ds into school. Anyone on here have anaemia?

TS Sympathies over the behaviour of your dd. My ds is acting up too at the moment - he is like a barometer of what is happening at home so I try to go easy on him but they are both hard work at the moment.

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 14:32

FFS pinchy nearly choked on my caramel wafer laughing at your opening gambit - sex AND a BK!?!?!? hopefully not at the same time

ChaCha · 11/03/2008 15:00

Hello girls,

Sorry to be such a stranger, i barely manage to post on post-natal thread and i've been with them for 3 years now. Hope i haven't missed too much, guess the 20 weeks scans are mostly happening over the next few weeks - am v.excited about ours - 17 days to go!!!!

Currently enjoying cheese, salad and pickle sandwiches and those mini pringles - gone off fried food completely or anything oily. What are the lastest cravings on here then?

How is Libbysister? Thought of you today on my way to Tesco. And IlanaK and everyone else. Will try harder to keep up with you all. Being pregnant with a 1 and 2 year old is somewhat tiresome....[yawn] taste of things to come am sure, Love C x

libbyssister · 11/03/2008 15:21

Hey Chacha, how ya been? Tired by the sound of things . I'm with you on the cheese thing, cheese, cheese scones, Quavers, macaroni cheese. I'm a crazy thing for cheese.

Petit ? so competitive pain tolerance is the way to go, huh? My dear mother's first words to me after the birth of DS were 'What took you so long?' so I've got plenty to improve on this time around

PetitFilou1 · 11/03/2008 15:25

Libbyssister LOL My midwife said to my mum 'she's done really well, she's had no pain relief etc' and my mum said 'she can when she tries' But that typifies my mother's inability to ever give praise. You are not good enough unless you are exceptional. But we won't go there....!

libbyssister · 11/03/2008 15:33

Ah Petit, you've made me feel 10 times better about mine . Bless 'em

My mum is also obsessed by the easy ride 'mothers get nowadays'... All that paid maternity and paternity leave, tax credits and partners/husbands help out so much more. I think she'd prefer to see me 'struggle' as much as she did. But then I asked her about getting up in the night to me she says 'Oh your dad used to see to you'.

TwilightSurfer · 11/03/2008 15:46

Have just registered for baby things. Now it's official.

Thanks for the link, Dizzy. Will take a look later.

Petitfilou - I think I may be anaemic. I have been on and off since my teens and was quite badly when pg with DD. It was actually the chat on here at the end of last week that got me thinking this time as I have been SO exhausted. Not just tired by barely able to function, as well as being even more pale and panda eyed than usual.

I've been feeling a bit better in the last few days - just normal tired but then last night I woke up with twitchy legs....That's what blighted my last pg and I heard later that it could be a sign of iron deficiency. On the off-chance that that's true and I could prevent it I made an appointment for a blood test on Thursday.

I've actually been away for a few days having my first real panic of the pregnancy over how on earth I'm going to manage. I was feeling so exhausted and just wondering how on earth I'd cope when I'm 10 times more tired with no opportunity for a rest.

We've got no family within 500 miles and not much of a local support network. DH is brilliant, but works long days and has to go away a lot. It was hard enough with DD's early days and she was sleeping through the night by 6 weeks and bar some colic didn't have any real problems. Let alone toddler too!

I know we'll get through it but I also know how hard it'll be. I know we're all in the same kind of boat, but doesn't make it any easier!

alittlebitshy · 11/03/2008 19:33

oh are twitchy legs a sign of anaemia? I've just started getting those.... A few people have aske dif i'm anaemic cos appar i look pale (i thought i looked ok ) and I'm v tired, but... hmmmmmmm....

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 19:52

poppysocks we have no family closer than south of glagow or ireland and I'm not a huge inspiration in terms of mothering skills but I'm only 11 miles away and you just have to holler!!!

PetitFilou1 · 11/03/2008 20:19

poppysocks I've never been anaemic before - you sound to me much more likely to be than I am. But - I don't eat any meat, have had children close together (apparently that can have something to do with it) and have been breathless at times which I did think was weird. Blood results back by the end of the week apparently so who knows. I will be equally unsurprised either way but it would be nice if there was something we could do to reduce the tiredness wouldn't it.

I also have a dh who is away a lot and who works long hours and have very little family support. So I sympathise. You need your friends in that situation. My neighbour was a great help in the early months when I had two under two - don't know how I'd have managed without her. I was always dumping ds on her (she had dd the same age) when I needed an hour off as was about to crack!

CaptainCaveman · 11/03/2008 20:26

pinchy you can get arrested for having sex in burger king you know!

Poppy I too have had mild anxiety today, remembering how I felt when pg with ds. Am sure this will pass soon. I still take Citalopram now so feel grateful for that. I have an appointment with the motherhood and mental health team on 14th April so hope they will advise me on when to come off citalopram and HOPEFULLY what I can take instead. There is no way I want to feel like I did when pg with ds .

Headaches here too today. Could be something to do with the low pressure? (I mean the weather!) I've cut right back on my caffeine intake as that was making headaches worse - need to find the happy medium I think!

Just had 5 mins of feeling Mr Sweetheart dancing in my womb - ahhhhh

Agree Pinchy that as soon as I've gone into mat clothes I suddenly look pg. I've had lots of comments today about a 'nice neat bump' and one person saying 'ooh aren't you tiny' . She should be bloody thankful she doesn't have to see me naked!!
