Hi all... and very happy that you are joining us leprechaun.

I also had a good christmas, quiet though. We stayed here in Zurich and only had the weekend off, was back at work on monday, so it didn't feel much different to a normal weekend. Christmas isn't quite the same here as in the UK!!!

I have to say that I am feeling better and better at the moment - I hope it continues like this!!! Although like you sweeney I'm still not sleeping well as I get woken up by really bad pain in my hips. It seems to help if I go walking and keep active during the day though. The other problem I have been having for a couple of weeks is sore ribs, the whole bump is pushing up on them and the baby also kicks them when it gets really active. It's a problem sitting at work all day, just can't get comfortable! I guess this is going to get worse as the baby gets bigger!

Bonymn, I am really curious about your inflatable pool. How do you inflate it? With a pump??? If so how long before your due date are you going to pump it up????? I guess you or dp doesn't want to pumping it up while you are in labour! I am thinking about how long it takes to pump up inflatable matresses etc... And - how do you fill it with water??? ...sorry, I just have some funny pictures gonig through my mind!!!! Hope everything goes the way you want it. It sounds great to be having a home birth with a pool. Do you know what position the baby is in now?

We have had quite a bit of snow in Zurich, I have a fantastic wintery view out of my window here with snow covered trees (and its sunny)!

bonymerryxmas · 30/12/2004 11:49

Leogaela - we will need a pump to inflate the pool but don't think it will take that long (we have an electric one somewhere I think!). However, might pump it up 2-3 weeks before my due date anyway and leave it in the dining room - these are the pools if you're interested here

bonymerryxmas · 30/12/2004 11:51

Oh - think the baby's still breech as we are still hearing the heartbeat in the same place - if she doesn't turn soon I'm going to start trying all the various techniques to get her to turn!

Leogaela · 30/12/2004 14:12

Bonym - I have heard people say the baby can turn really, really late - up to a week before even. I hope for you it doesn't happen so late so you can put your mind at rest and be sure to have a home birth. Do you have the option right up to when you go into labour? Are you sleeping on your left side? Someone somewhere said that is supposed to help the baby get into the right position.
What week are you now?

bonymerryxmas · 30/12/2004 20:34

I'm 28 weeks and wouldn't worry this early expect dd was breech and I had ECV to turn her at 36 weeks. My midwife has told me that there is a higher chance of this one also being breech as it may be that the shape of my womb means that babies are more comfortable that way. If still breech at 36weeks I think they will give me the option to have ECV again - it was fine last time, but since then I have read that some people have had not-so-good experiences and would therefore hope not to be in this situation again. Finger's crossed!

misdee · 02/01/2005 19:53

We're all a biut quiet over the xmas period arent we

Hope you all had a good cmas and new year and heres to our 2005 march babies arriving safely!!

My buggy turned up this week, and even tho i havent been able to actually use it yet, as havent been anywhere, i have tried out all the combinations, and i have to say its pretty impressive. The baby section lays completely flat and it is like a hammock in some ways. the toddler seat is good and dd2 likes it. dh told her the buggy was for the baby so she refused to sit in it at first lol. not too sure if i'll be using it as 2 toddler combination, as am hoping dd2 will be walking further by then, but i am impressed by the toddler/baby set up, planty of room for baby in there. May order the cocoon later on, if its still very cold in late feb/early march.

woo can't believe i'm 31wks!! Went mad in the nursery with plastering walls ect. Managed to get some good bargains in the sale for baby, who knew you could need so much stuff for one little baby!? Keep getting woken up in the night with bad hip pains and cramp in my bum and calves, damn sciatica! Hope everyone had a good Christmas, mine was great but I ate like an absolute pig! Baby is still kicking me in the bladder and ribs but not moving as much due to lack of room, not long to go!

popsycal · 03/01/2005 13:50

is it just me, or is there anyone else who has done absolutely nothing to get ready for their baby?

Leogaela · 03/01/2005 13:58

Happy new year everyone!

...yes, not long to go now, but I have a feeling its going to be the longest 9-ish weeks of my life! Although January will go quickly as I have lots of things to look forward to which will keep me entertained and stop me from counting days....!

Ribs and hips are also causing me a problem. I am fed up with work as it is, but it makes it worse that sitting down makes my ribs so uncomfortable and sometimes I feel as if I can hardly breath! Somehow I know this is going to get worse over the next few weeks!

My baby is still very active. It has quiet days, but then other days it just doesn't stop moving!

misdee · 03/01/2005 18:20

I am almost sorted on the equipment fron and clothes etc for bubs, but need to get some junk cleared and the place ready iykwim.

i will pack my labour bag soon, as with dh being in and out of hospital (back in today) i feel i need to be organised, in case the stress of things sets things off early.

First day back at work after almost 2 weeks off - heaven. So of course first priority is to check mumsnet!

Poppsycal - I haven't done a single thing towards preparing for the baby. Haven't even dug dd's old baby clothes out of the loft yet! We did buy dd a bed which will be delivered in a few weeks, so our next task is to extricate her from her beloved cot.

Had a great Christmas - ate far too much and did far too little! Dd (age 2.5) was thrilled by the whole thing, and utterly delightful.

I am feeling really well - so decided to give the cycle ride to work another go. It nearly finished me off this morning, but that was due to the force 9 gale which seemed to be blowing against me! Will see if I can keep pedalling for a few more weeks.

Boneym - really excited to read about your pool. I'm hoping for a home waterbirth too - though had been intending to hire a pool. Am amazed how cheap the one you found is. Must start getting myself organized now March is not so far off.

popsycal · 04/01/2005 12:39

pidge i am alomst at teh stage you are at....not done baby clothes yet....and went to look at beds for ds this morning.....
think i need to get a move on as early induction may still be on the cards!

Leogaela · 04/01/2005 13:05

I have also still have prepared nothing at all. A couple of friends are going to give us some stuff so i want to see what we are given before i buy anything! i am reluctant to get things before I really know what I am going to use. I think essentials are bed, car seat, push chair, something warm for outside and clothes to bring the baby home in, a few baby gros, nappies and baby bath stuff. Am i missing anything essential????? Is it realistic to bath the baby in the sink to start with? we are not getting a baby bath as dp says he will get in the bath with the baby when it needs bathing, but i'm not so sure...

Popsycal - is the early induction a possibility because of your high bp?

Pidge · 04/01/2005 13:45

Leogaela - I think you've got it covered there - I'm definitely for the minimalist approach to baby paraphernalia. And you will be stunned how much stuff you get given when the baby arrives. Though I have just realised that since this baby is due in March, and dd was a July baby, maybe shortsleeved babygros won't quite suffice!

Popsycal - the bed for dd was quite exciting. Inevitably there was nothing quite right in the sales, so we ended up paying full price, plus it wasn't in stock, so it'll be a few weeks till it arrives. Dd spent the whole time in the bed department tucking up teddies in the different beds and kissing them goodnight, much to the amusement of the other customers.

ZoeC · 04/01/2005 14:34

Hi all,

Well, dd is now sleeping in her bed and the cot is back in the nursery ready - just need to give that room a really good clean and replace the border that dd tore off and that will be ready.

Clothes wise I don't need much as this will be dd2 so I'll reuse quite a lot of her stuff - I've bought bits and pieces already as I can get cheap clothes at the staff shop but my last night working is tonight so I won't be there as often from now on. Everything else I'll just reuse from first time round.

I've got some old sheets in (next door neighbour had a sort out and I mentioned they'd come in useful if I get my homebirth) and I've drafted a birth plan. So I guess I'm quite organised at the moment . That's just me I guess.

Only thing to decide now is if I have the inclination and energy to have a go at potty training dd. It's now or much later really since I won't want to do it when dd2 is newborn.

Had ante-natal today - all fine. Measuring a little big but not too much.

popsycal · 04/01/2005 16:52

jad midwife appointment - have to have them every week and bp was 130.75 - excellent for me

bonymerryxmas · 05/01/2005 09:44

I am now officially on maternity leave after the Xmas break! Had a blissful day yesterday, felt so much less stressed not having to charge around in the morning getting ready for work! DH painted the nursery at the weekend, and we are having new carpet fitted in the next week or two so I can then start the fun stuff - soft furnishings etc! Have still got a lot of stuff from when dd was a baby - cot, pram, moses basket and loads of clothes, but there still seems to be a lot that we still need. Took dd shopping on Monday afternoon and we bought a few bits, including a baby bath - she was so lovely, wouldn't let me carry anything - walked back to the car with the bath over one shoulder (in a bag) and 2 carrier bags. I kept asking her to let me take something but she was insistent - just kept grinning and saying "no - you're pregnant, I'm not letting you carry anything!" (She's 6.5 btw). Am finding it increasingly difficult to get comfortable in bed - keep waking up with sore hips/back and have to hobble to the loo - usually waking poor dh in the process. He never complains though bless him .

Pidge - I will let you know what the pool is like when it arrives - should be here within the week hopefully. We're going to inflate it to check size etc although I think it should be big enough - dimensions they give don't seem dissimilar from some of the rigid sided ones.

Leogaela · 05/01/2005 10:00

That's great news for both of you Popsycal & Bonym!

At the moment I think I am better off coming to work. If I don't have to come to work I think I will end up laying around on the sofa all day which will make the hips even worse when I go to bed.
We are getting a new posh matress, maybe that'll help!

I am in a real state of excitement at the moment. So much is happening.... My mum, aunt and uncle are coming out to visit next week. We are going for a week to the mountains - they are skiing with dp & his parents (I am so excited that I have even forgotten to be upset that I can't snowboard!!!). We are getting married while we are there!!!!! And its my birthday that week and this Saturday is going to be my hen day.... and that's not to mention how excited I am about the baby....!!!!

Pidge · 05/01/2005 10:04

BoneyM - very interested to hear what the pool is like. I had been planning to hire one from Splashdown - but it's much more expensive. The one I was looking at is also inflatable - a tiny bit bigger than your one I think, but otherwise I'm not sure what the differences are. Do you know if the one you've ordered is strong enough for you to lean on the sides whilst labouring?

I have also just found out that my next door neighbour, who had a homebirth in November for her first child, is with a different group of midwives than me, and her group of midwives supply their own birthing pool (assuming it's not in use, which they say is unlikely). So I need to find out about that too. Am seeing my midwife on Friday - really MUST get myself more organised!

Popsycal - great news on the blood pressure! Must have been a chilled out Christmas.

Leogaela - fantastic news about the wedding and hen do! Not to mention the week in the mountains. I'm like you - better off in work rather than driving myself up the wall at home. Though I am definitely counting down now ... 6 weeks to go after this one.

popsycal · 05/01/2005 10:20

OOOh and forgot to say that I am officially on maternty leave now rather than on the sick!
AND - i bought a little pack of newborn vests yesterday...bit of a token effort but got me started! DS was adamant i ought to get pink and is insisting it is a baby girl called baby jesus (!) but i got cream!

Londonmummy05 · 05/01/2005 14:38

hey girls, only just found this new thread! I'm 31 weeks now- it;s going so fast! I've been fine up until yesterday when I came down with an awful cold. Didn't sleep all last night from coughing and runny nose my midwife said I can only take paracetamol so no cough medicine, had anyone else been ill- it sucks, it's uncomfortable enough at this stage without the added bonus of a cold, can't complain too much I see thatsome of you have a had a hard time so far, hope everything works out for you all.

sweeney · 05/01/2005 16:49

sounds like heaven leogaela!!! how gorgeous to be getting married and skiing! i went for the first time last year and absolutely loved it, but i guess we won't be doing that for a while. are you going to ski? my dp has been going ever since he was a kid and is being willingly deprived this year but it's a shame for him i think.
i'm feeling low at the moment, the lack of sleep is getting to me. hip pain means i can't lie on my side for long and lying on my back is too difficult as well so feel trapped. but it's the pain really that makes the night's bad. and i'm finding it hard to find any peace inside myself and to tune into the baby.

Leogaela · 05/01/2005 17:14

Bad news about the cold londonmummy. Hope you feel better. I thought our immunity was supposed to protect us better against cold and stuff when we are pregnant.

Sweeney - yes, looking forward to the marriage and the week off. I think I would be a lot less positive now if i didn't have that to look forward to! For me its rib pain during the day and hip pain at night. My ribs were kicked so hard today that I had to get up and leave my desk, was close to tears!

I guess you've tried all the suggestions with supporting yourself wtih cushions etc? someone else told me to get an extra duvet put it under you and then tuck it into all the places you can. I haven't tried it yet but could be an idea.

I am a snowboarder and you tend to sit on your bum a lot to put the board on etc. and need stomach muscles to stand up again! Also snowboarders fall a lot - not good! If I was a good confident skiier then maybe I would go on some easy slopes (a friend of mine did yesterday, she's 30 weeks pregnant! I'm impressed), but I'm not a confident enough skiier to not fall so this year I'll be walking and watching.
Your dp is going to have a lot of fun teaching the little one to ski! I know mine is looking forward to it! A couple of years yet though!

bonym · 05/01/2005 18:17

Leogaela - what a exciting time for you! i'm sure the wedding will be fab (also birthday and hen day!) Many congrats.

Pidge - the pool I'm hiring is supposed to be very strong - they have a picture on the website of a man standing on the edge (!!) so I guess it will be strong enough to lean on - it also has two handles inside which I think may be good to grab onto during a contraction . I know that Redshoes who gave birth recently bought one of these pools but her birth announcement didn't say whether or not she got to use it. I looked at Splashdown as well, but didn't think their pool was significantly better to justify the extra cost ( I could be wrong of course!)

Londonmummy - I had a rottenn tickly cough recently and the pharmacist checked out the various medicines for me - the one I bought had only ingredients to soothe the throat (benylin for tickly coughs) - just glucose and sugar really, so nothing that could harm the baby. It helped a bit - of course if you're cough is more chesty then this is no help whatsoever! Hope you feel better soon.
