mel2005 · 05/09/2008 12:59

when i spoke to the consultant he said that he didnt think i would make it past 36 weeks, probably because i am not very tall. they would induce me at 38 if i hadnt had them but i want a c-sction so it will be between 36-37 weeks. i am lucky because i work from home for my DH at the moment so i can take maternity from the day i have them.

DH might be travelling over to see a couple of galaxies this afternoon. i know he is running late on the job because of an emergency job this morning and he is so tired as its been hectic the last few months, he might not make it as they are over 100 miles away. the only thing we have here today is the a massive van and its just too big for me to drive, let alone park as its a huge lwb high top one, so i am desperate for a car. its raining and i have run out of potatoes, bread and butter so i am going to have to put my two in the double MB with the raincover on and take a brolly to brave the shop.

Nellstar · 05/09/2008 14:47

Gettingbigger - I did join Tamba but having read a few things and a twin book written in conjunction with them, in which all their evidence said the worst behaved twins, most dangerous pregnancy, least loveable in the public perception were identical twin boys, I think I might give all of their info a bit of a miss from now on. Hope you can make it to yoga next week but understand it's a schlep from Clapton. She was great wasn't she? Right, off now to take my littlun to the library. He has refused to sleep which is very unlike him and driving me nuts..Ah well. Look after yourself.

MerryMarigold · 05/09/2008 15:40

Hi everyone. Wow, GBB you had a day of meeting mumsnetters yesterday, inc. a surprise one. It was great to meet you and 'friend' (in case she doesn't want her RL name on here). I hope the babies come soon for her.

I had a consultant appointment this morning and he dropped a bomb in passing, "I hope you can carry on till 34 weeks". Ehhh? Double take? I said, "Do you think I might go into labour before that?" and he said, "I think you MAY, the babies are big." (like it is a time to correct my grammar). Then waltzed out of the room before I'd had a chance to even take that information in and ask more qu's. When I thought about it afterwards, I got quite emotional and drove home in tears, not really sure why, just couldn't stop them...it is a bit scary because if I go into labour with babies transverse it will mean emergency c-section which is not something I was hoping for. And I feel so unprepared. Still, I am now 30+ weeks so I don't need to panic too much, I guess, in terms of their development etc.

It was probably a good 'warning' anyway to get a bit more sorted and to at least sort the basics of my hospital bag out.

Pazza, when you have time to catch up on here . It was lovely to meet you and your adorable girls. You are so calm with them and they were gorgeous and cuddly...I definitely took on board some of the bf advice and the cot thing is a great idea...will be trying it with ours, can wedge it to the bed somehow. Good ideas!

accessorizequeen · 05/09/2008 21:36

Merry, , is that likely because of the diabetes, babies are often bigger because of it aren't they?

Mel, can you advise again on where to buy replacement MB carrycot mattresses/covers and seat covers as well? My mb arrived on monday and it is in pretty poor condition, which I'm a bit upset about. I guess you get what you pay for thought, but he should have been more honest about the damage. The chassis is fine, nothing broken, but everything is v.shoddy and having had new pushchairs for both ds1 & 2 I feel a bit that dt's are in something a bit rubbish really. The other buggy (baby jogger city mini) should arrive in a few days, though, I'm sure that will make me feel better.

Also, does anyone have any thoughts on bedside cots? At the mo, we just have a single cotbed in the nursery for them because our room is very small. I kept ds2 in his MB carrycot for a few weeks in our room and co-slept a bit before moving him to the big cot. Even that was pretty squashed, I have to keep my clothes in the nursery as no space for a wardrobe in our bedroom.

But now worried that I am letting myself in for a nightmare if I have to trek to their room 8 times a night. Was looking at the m/care bedside cot & also the arms reach co-sleeper which is apparently quite good for twins & might just fit if we move stuff out. Was intrigued at the comment from Pazza having them next to your bed. We have given up the spare room for their nursery, and I doubt there will be room in there for even the Aero inflatable double mattress we've just bought so what to do! DP is prepared to sleep downstairs on the mattress for a few weeks/months if necessary so i can co-sleep and he can get some sleep. Help, anyone?

what was wrong with the fabrics? are they faded/worn? they do wash well, i would try that first. i have had some grubby secondhand buggies before because people cant work out how to get the fabrics off. on the double MB you can remove the centre bar if you have trouble getting the fabrics off and they all have poppers on. you have to give the hood a firm pull to get the bar out.

i have just gone back to look at the advert, it does say good condition. i would mail her and say that you are unhappy. are the carrycots ok? do the fabrics have little dots on the hood flap and the seats? if so its the man made canvas, if it is all plain black it is usally the natural canvas and it does go soft with wear that i think makes it more comfortable (mine are the natural canvas)

there are some reasonable new bedside cots on e-bay with mattresses. i had the cotbed by my bed last time but she ended up sleeping in between us most of the time.

MerryMarigold · 05/09/2008 22:22

Hey AQ. A quick pop in. Consultant didn't give me reason other than they are big and then waltzed off. Pazza has this really cool 'cot' in her bedroom, it's actually a smallish playpen which fits 2x swing cradle mattresses. She drilled holes in the frame so it is the right height for their bed (which is a low one) and it is just wedged against a wardrobe.

MarsLady · 05/09/2008 22:34

'friend' is rather lovely isn't she Merry?

MerryMarigold · 06/09/2008 09:16

She is, mars, but was definitely at the "I WANT THESE CREATURES OUT NOW!" stage of twin pregnancy. She was much more able to make small talk, be pleasant and focus on asking Pazza great questions than I will be at that stage, or probably even in a week or two's time!

MarsLady · 06/09/2008 09:19

She's been at that stage for weeks lol! I just about persuaded her to wait to 37 weeks. I think she's done so well and am truly hoping for a gorgeous birth for her and the DTs.

MerryMarigold · 06/09/2008 11:01

Yes, she's lucky they are BOTH head down. Are you doula-ing her?

MarsLady · 06/09/2008 11:22

Yes

mel2005 · 06/09/2008 14:30

well i am off later to see a new shape galaxy. its alot more money than we wanted to spend but we will be keeping it longer as its newer than the others we were looking at. i can just about scrape enough pennies to gether to make a reasonable offer and we dont want to buy on finance. its got the panoramic roof that DH wanted but is hard to find and only available in the new shape. its the same as the one he went to buy yesterday and it was sold already. luckily its only 5 miles away and has only just come in. i cant take it away today but they might rush it through for monday evening. the children will have to miss another day of nursery but it cant be helped and i just cant face trying to drive the huge van down the almost single track lane to the school.
i hope they will take an offer or i am stuffed again.

hope you all have a great weekend.

MerryMarigold · 07/09/2008 19:18

Hey mel, did you get your car?

Accessorize. are you still out there?

accessorizequeen · 07/09/2008 20:08

Still here I'm hanging on for this week as ds1 starting f/t school so I'll be able to finish off all my jobs, nursery finally coming together. Our galaxy arrives this week, I think, dp has arranged and it's not silver so I'm happy. How're feeling now about them coming at 34 weeks (of course dr could be completely wrong there, they won't give me any size estimates here as they say they're completely inaccurate!)?

Just updating my email contacts so will add you to the birth list, Merry

Mel, are you getting one tomorrow? And thanks for MB info. The seat fabric is plain black, very sun-faded, has been patched in places, close to holes in other places. The chassis has really been knocked about a lot, whereas my mb looks almost brand new after 2 years of use. Strange. I think it's been stored in a garage for some time, dp says the carrycots smell which really upset me (I can't smell anything so hadn't realised). He's going to wash everything in the bath this week hopefully and then we'll decide whether to keep it or sell it on ebay (carrycots separately I think). Neither of us are v.happy about putting the dt's in there as it stands, very disappointed. I really wanted a double carrycot as well, the twin ones are so tiny and narrow so I guess I've just made a bad buy all round . Couldn't figure out how to remove the seat covers fully, but will have another go on your advice. Lucky the baby jogger 'car buggy' is coming this week but I was v.keen on carrycots and looking at my babies.

MerryMarigold · 07/09/2008 20:48

Hi aq. glad you are managing to get things done still. wow, that's good. what colour is the car then? didn't realise you had gone for a galaxy in the end...congrats. thanks for putting me on list, am dying to know when it happens...(in case you hadn't gathered that ).

feel better about early babies now as they have been behaving a lot better than they were on Friday and yesterday...wasn't so worried about them being 34 weeks as that it could be 'anytime now' the way he said it. I don't think consultant was so much going on weight as the rest of the measurements which are all between 50th and 75th centile for both of them. plus the diabetes not being fully under control still so they are getting bigger quickly. also i am only 5'4 so there is not a lot of room for them to be big! Still hoping to get to 36wks, but 34 would be ok I guess.

sorry about your MB. can't believe they said it was good condition! is there any way you can get it back to them or get paypal refund? probably not what you can be bothered with right now, though. i was bidding on one today which had a carrycot and it went for 445.00 (was going to sell carrycot on separately). Not paying that though! not sure about you selling carrycots separately, they don't seem to be selling well on their own, whereas with the pushchair, it seems to push the price of the pushchair up a fair bit. just my observation. dh thinks i have got addicted to bidding for MB's on ebay!

anyway...keep going. you're doing incredibly well. hope ds1 has a wonderful first week.

accessorizequeen · 07/09/2008 21:11

Hi merry, I just added a photo to FB of me with bump and must add you as a friend so you can see it
If you get to 34 weeks I'm sure they'll be fine, as you say they are on the big side so less likely to need SCBU. I was told to watch out from 28 weeks and here I still am so who knows what babies want to do really.
got a blue galaxy, decided it was a better quality car than sedona despite lack of doors (sigh). I don't care that much anymore, we just had to make a decision! Thanks for info re: selling carrycots, I didn't realise would get more cash selling together. Can't imagine anyone with newborn dt's (esp PFB's) being that impressed with ours so not sure what to do. We don't really want to get into paypal dispute at this point but they should have shown photos of the damage. Yes, £300 cheap for one with 2 carrycots but not in such poor condition.t v.upset the other night, trying not to worry about it now.

mel2005 · 07/09/2008 21:59

AQ oh gosh, you should mail the seller and explain that you are not happy that they didnt mention the damage and that you will be buying new fabrics and would like a partial refund. you will have a case to claim a partial refund via paypal. the fabrics for the single carrycot all come off and go in the wash, i havent got around to taking the twin carrycot to bits yet. when i did the single before i sold it i put the fabrics for the carrycot in the machine including the mattress on a handwash cycle and dried on the washing line.
also there is a screw and bolt in the symbol on the footrest on the chassis. if you undo it the centre bar will come out and you can slide the seats off.
if the seats are ok when washed i would just get a new hood from mountain buggy but make sure you get the right fabric. then sell the carrycots on e-bay and get a twin carrycot. you will not be using the seats and hood fabric until 6 months anyway.
shame you are not near me as i would pop around to give you a hand.
great news on the galaxy though, the blue ones are lovely
the galaxy is a better quality car than the sedona and they hold their value better. if it had sliding doors it would be perfect but if i end up not being able to get i the side doors because someone has parked too close, i will climb in the boot with the children to get them in the car seats.

i test drove the new style galaxy on saturday and i loved it. it had the panoramic roof as well. i didnt like that it doesnt have a spare wheel as once you have used the repair pack you have to buy a whole new wheel. it was very similar to drive to the c-max i have just sold with the 2litre diesel engine it has a great kick to it. i put an offer on it which was declined and they would only knock £300 off, i am a cash buyer and it doesnt need an extra waranty from the dealer as it has a manufacturers one. i think they could tell that i needed a car and i loved it and they wouldnt budge on the price BUT i did walk away. they are shut on sunday so i am hoping i will get a call on monday. there are quite a few around so i am unsure if i will go back and give them what they wanted for it. but i really need a car now as the children are going to nursery tomorrow and we are borrowing MIL car. its also my little boys birthday this week and i havnt got any of the party food yet at least i bought all the pressies.

TALLULAHBELLE · 07/09/2008 22:37

Hi - sorry haven't read the thread so hope I'm not jumping into the middle of anything important. Am just busy introducing myself on the multiple threads, directed here by accessorizequeen. Have a DD of 14 1/2 months, expecting twins in Jan bloody terrified etc.

MerryMarigold · 08/09/2008 10:23

welcome to the pg with twins (and new twin mummies) thread, tallulah. we're all terrified, but the later it gets the more you start feeling like: "I haven't got the energy to be terrified anymore!". Dh asked me whether I still liked the names we'd picked and I realised I really don't care anymore. How bad is that?! I don't love 'em or hate 'em, just feel indifferent.

mel, you are the MB guru! accessorize, for 300.00 they better give you some money back. I know it's a pain to sort it with paypal (can dh do it?), but I also think you have to teach people a lesson that they can't get away with these things or they just carry on. It's really unfair that they said 'good condition' without detailing any damage. I got 2 immaculate condition carrycots for 80.00 (and they are immaculate, look new), which means you paid about 250.00 for that buggy. Not sure how much new covers and hood are, but they should pay for it, I reckon. I know what you mean about not caring though. I have quite a lot of 'moments' like that, and I am sure they are just going to blur into one long 'don't care' by the time I am 37 weeks (if I get there!).

accessorizequeen · 08/09/2008 13:01

Hi Tallulah, glad you could join us I'm sure GettingBiggerBird will be along shortly to add you to the list which you can see if you scroll up/down? Lots of us on here with toddlers already so same issues. Merry's right, does get to a point you're so tired you stop worrying but that's no comfort now. Important things, have you had 20 week scan and do you know what you're having??!

Merry, Mel, yes v.disappointed about the MB. DP said he wanted to move it out of our living room as the carrycots were smelling (I really can't smell anything when pg). We had another chat about it late last night and dp decided he'd have enough and emailed the seller asking for full refund, we would share costs of posting back to him. He said he'll deal with it, which was v.sweet of him as I'm the one who bought it! I think the final straw was that his mum gave us the money for a new MB double and we decided to buy a 2nd hand one plus some other things for the twins - she would be so disappointed to see what we'd bought with her money.

Consultant is going to see me on the 16th, possibly for a sweep and then take it from there so not long now! I'll be 37+6 then. She was lovely, answered every qu about how much monitoring etc because I like to know what to expect.

mel2005 · 08/09/2008 15:03

welcome tallulahbelle, is your 40 week due date in jan? i am due 10th jan at 40 weeks but 20th dec at 37 weeks which is more likely (actually the consultant said 36 weeks). i have an almost 4 year old and a 2.5 year old.

i hope you get a refund AQ, senditnow.com are a good courier, they use parcelforce and collect from your house. £11.99 24 hr delivery and £10.50 48hr delivery. insured upto £150 and £10 extra for upto £500 insurance.

wow you havent got long to go, i hope i last that long. i am very excited for you.

i bought a car today, the one i looked at on saturday. its a new version galaxy 2.0 tdci ghia in dark grey colour with a panoramic roof, almost two years old. the dealer called me this morning and they accepted the offer i put in. i cant pick it up until wed morning as it is going in for a full service but i am so excited. the insurance is only £70 a year more than the c-max but the tax is a bit more at £172. it does the same miles to the gallon which is great. after all the stress of looking for a car i feel relieved. i now have everything i need so i can relax.
i dare not count up how much i have spent on the twins already.

GettingBiggerBird · 08/09/2008 15:32

Hello everyone else, I've been busy at work (how rude) so not able to post, and I had a very lazy weekend so didn't go near the PC. Waiting for news from my 'friend' any time now, she will WILL those babies out in the next few days, I'm sure. Well, I wouldn't argue with her, anyway! ( I know she will read this - she's a lurker)

Hooray for car purchases, boo for shoddy MBs. I bought a sling off eBay last week that turned up smelly (unfortunately I definitely haven't lost my sense of smell, AQ, quite the opposite) and covered in cat hairs. I will wait till they chase me for feedback before I give them a piece of my mind...

MerryMarigold · 08/09/2008 16:08

Oooooooooh, 'friend', please post, please post and STOP lurking around. How are you feeling? What's the latest on the babies? You have a ready made nickname now...you can be 'friend' (although your real life name is rather nice and I considered for my girl twin).

accessorizequeen · 08/09/2008 18:56

Haven't heard yet about the MB, I just want to stick my head in the sand if there's a fight! Can't believe people send such shoddy stuff, I've sold slings & buggies on ebay and mumsnet and would be mortified if anyone disappointed with their purchase, always think how I would feel. What sling did you get GBB, my neighbour's dh just dropped off the big bag full I'd loaned her and I felt as even more in the house, I must be up to 7 or 8 I think and still would like a closer sling!

I felt v.excited on way home from hospital that will be having them within 10 days! Did I mention I've nixed both names now, sigh, have to start again. Arggggghhhh.

How're you doing on the buggy situation, Tallulah? You have got a few months left, I only bought mine at 32 weeks I think!

MerryMarigold · 08/09/2008 21:22

AQ. what are your nixed names? maybe I will steal them having gone off mine a bit!

Hope the MB works out.

I have been given 2 slings. I gave my wilkinet away, I couldn't figure it out last time. I've now got a baby bjorn, quite old, and another one that looks like a hammock and has a ring. Not sure if it's a classic ring sling, I don't think so. I may get a ring sling for bfing...see how it goes. What do you people recommend?
