My twins are due in May and it would be nice to have other multiple-mums-to-be to chat to!

Poorbuthappy... they don't have to come from separate eggs. There's an amazing DVD (programme shown on one of the BBCs a few months ago) which explains the whole process. At the very beginning the eggs have XXY chromosones. If it splits at the very beginning you get 2 eggs with XXY. Now each egg then drops either an X or a Y. So if one drops an X and the other a Y then you get two eggs, one with XX and one with XY therefore identical boy/girl twins. My consultant also told me this and because of my work it is something that I've looked into. It isn't as common as ID boys or girl but it does happen.

AQ.. I look in because of my work with twin mums etc and because I'm a nosy bint!

Don't worry about keeping up on the d'y ever threads. FG does a weekly round up (which is great). We just like to say hi and see how you are all doing and offer any words of wisdom lol and advice etc.

MarsLady · 24/07/2008 18:11

reassurance needed here my lovelies

MerryMarigold · 24/07/2008 19:24

Mars, it's great having you and your experience around...I'd still be interested in the 79cm pushchair as it's likely I will need to put them in and out outside. What is it? How much d'ya want for it? I'm not far away from you I think (E7). I also need someone to talk me back into a natural birth!! My original decision was that if it was possible, I would go for it, but now the closer it gets I am freaking a bit (had 3rd deg tears first time).

Accessorize, interesting the book says you need a different buggy for first 3 months. It's definitely been feeling like that, but I have been in denial as it's extortionate to buy 2 twin buggies and seems like such fuss too. I think I may stay inside for 3 months and make sure there is either someone to take ds to playschool or someone to watch babies while I pop out for 15 mins to drop him!!

I will check the weekly round up, Mars. I definitely feel like everyone on the 'dya ever' was so supportive when I was in the 'triplets' phase! And I am following Timesofhope's triplets with great interest! (or just being nosy bint too).

accessorizequeen · 24/07/2008 20:54

I still don't think I get the whole conception thing that well much less twins, far too complicated for my cloudy brain.

AQ, Emma Mahoney suggested hiring one which I know a friend of mind did although don't know where from? I've nearly decided on an mb urban with one carrycot which twins can share if small enough or one in cot & one in lie flat seat. Will have to do, I think. I don't mind spending some more now on one for the car but only if we'll get the majority back reselling - still can't think what might suit though.

MerryMarigold · 24/07/2008 21:13

accessorize, i got the clothes today. thanks sooooooo much. they fit (for the time being )! In fact, wore the skirt today as it's so hot in London and I don't have many cool things. Hope you are ok for clothes now! I have discarded more than 50% of my maternity stuff now.

MarsLady · 25/07/2008 02:04

Merry... it's a Redcastle Shop n Jog (I never jogged!) Used it for about 18months. Make me an offer and it's yours. It has an inbuilt sunscreen and lovely soft seats.

As to natural birth... it's incredible and wonderful. You recover more easily. Come over to the d'y ever threads. Lots of twin mums there who can/will wax lyrical about natural twin birth.

Don't forget your water ladies!

accessorizequeen · 25/07/2008 21:00

merry, glad the clothes will be useful, just sat here doing nothing as they won't go round my middle. A mumsnet pal posted me the skirt so I think it's only fair to pass it onto another mumsnetter! I'm down to two mothercare skirts & a pair of too warm trousers, they're getting washed a lot!

why is it I have no trouble buying newborn cloth nappy bits and clothes but can't settle on a buggy?!!

PazzaPlusTwo · 25/07/2008 21:07

Hello! Hello 'new' twin-pg mums!

I have a 70cm front door and can categorically say there is not a twin side-by-side that fits through.

I almost spent lots of cash on the iCandy Pear tandem but ended up not - my iCandy stockist couldn't be bothered to get two 'carrycot converters' in so we couldn't try it out fully. Didn't exactly win salesperson of the year! It has a beautiful folding action and folds very small, and takes maxi-cosi car seats. Everything seemed to slot on and off the frame really easily. My only concern was that as the DTs grow, they may be a bit squashed as it is SO beautifully compact, so I wasn't sure it would really last 2-3 years - which you'd want it to for that price. I think it would have been perfect for us for the first year, if price hadn't been a factor. As DT-day approached I gave up on the stockist and we got a cheap single from Argos and a baby bjorn. This works really well for us!

Since then someone gave us a third-hand maclaren rally twin which is just brilliant. Light, compact, sturdy, turns on a sixpence. When it finally gives up the ghost I will buy another, even tho I have to put it up outside the front door. They are under £200 new.

Remember after the first 3/6 months you suddenly have a lot more options, with doubles where both seats don't lie flat. Another reason not to spend a fortune at the start.

accessorizequeen · 25/07/2008 21:15

Hi, pazza, how's it going with your lovely dt's? I am so in awe of those of you on the coal face, so to speak. That's interesting re the icandy, I'm quite keen on it as my car buggy (doing school runs without going insane) if 2nd hand prices not too bad. Would be it be feasible, do you remember, to change from a carrycot to a normal seat day to day (so i could use it for a twin or ds2 who only learnt to walk 2 months ago! I have soooo many slings now, I'm absolutely covered, just have to have the back strength to carry them now. I can't wait to use them, really.

MerryMarigold · 25/07/2008 21:22

Thanks for advice pazza. Am with you on the buggy stuff, I think. It's a rally you have is it? I will look that up. I have seen a triumph (looked a bit flimsy) and a techno. I was really restrained with my first child, and got a secondhand buggy and then kept seeing other people's lovely, new ones and getting jealous! So this time I was like, "It's my last babies, I am going to make a fuss." But I think I've just lost it a bit and also panicking because of the whole 'twins being difficult' and trying to make my life easier! Looking for a buggy has been the bane of my life, so really it has made nothing easier. Being chilled out and a bit more 'simple' is the way to go, I think! Am also looking up Mars' buggy too and we will take it from there...

mars, i will actually pay and join mumsnet [blush not dine it before] and CAT you regarding the buggy. Don't bother trying to CAT me because the email address mumsnet have is not working at the moment. I will post re. the natural birth on the d'ya ever...thanks.

accessorize, i wore trousers to my appointment today. They're lovely but only juuuuust fit! I give them a month at the most!

accessorizequeen · 25/07/2008 21:25

you're doing better than me, merry, they were too tight the first time I wore them!

MerryMarigold · 25/07/2008 21:31

yeah, but i'm only 24 weeks remember! my mum gave me an old dress of hers that i look like a walking circus tent, but it is very cool (as in the opposite of hot, not trendy).

accessorizequeen · 25/07/2008 21:34

I did buy them before 24 weeks, if that makes you feel better. I found a few of those h&m trousers were outgrown lastime pretty early as well. i would have quite happily worn a tent today if it had cooled me down!

best go back to making lists (nursery painted yesterday yay!)!

MerryMarigold · 25/07/2008 22:03

mars, i can't find any for sale at the moment on the internet! can you tell me if suitable from birth...ie. lie flat.

MarsLady · 25/07/2008 22:57

There you go but mine is black with grey seats. No stripes Having read the description it's not suitable from birth so may not interest you at all.

You can email me on lovelymarslady at aol dot com.

PazzaPlusTwo · 25/07/2008 23:07

my oh my i do NOT envy you twin pg ladies on hot days! my SIL lent me a simple spaghetti-strap black jersey dress from jojomamanbebe that i just lived in - totally stretched it with my colossal bump tho!!

AQ - think you need to try out the iCandy before you buy. my stockist said you could use the ordinary seats for lie-flat with a 'carrycot converter' thing that makes them into a sort of 'carrycot lite' rather than buy the quite heavy and expensive carrycots. it seemed easy to convert it from a single to a double (very clever) and to swap the bits on and off. the Pear is just an Apple (single) with an extra 'pip' frame on - took me ages to realise that - so you may pick up an Apple on ebay and get the converter frame and extra seats etc separately. i didnt find a Pear on ebay. i am still jealous when i see an iCandy out and about!!

Merry - my friend has the twintechno for her twins. they do seem flimsy but they are light, and they can be repaired - my rally has a new handle on it.

MerryMarigold · 26/07/2008 10:24

pazza - techno is a lot more robust, triumph is the flimsy one! i looked up rally and i don't think they make it anymore, looks like it became twin traveller which is also not on sale anymore, so...come to conclusion the techno is the 'new' rally! not sure how similar though! ooooh, i could do mastermind on twin buggies...and your specialist subject is "Twin pushchairs available in the UK from 2007-2009"!

MerryMarigold · 26/07/2008 10:25

Mars, will mail ya. parents may be interested...

accessorizequeen · 26/07/2008 20:19

at merry. I'm getting fairly obsessed myself. Pazza, many thanks, hadn't come across any of that about the pear. I'm starting to think it would be ideal for the first year, and then swap for an mb. There is poss. a place nearby selling them, I'll check it out.

GettingBiggerBird · 28/07/2008 16:57

Hello all, hope you're all well and coping with the heat (and/or your DTs are). I've been at a festival all weekend camping in this heat, it was a challenge. And off for more camping on Friday. I didn't realise I'd be feeling so pregnant so quickly when I made all these plans. Wondering how easy it will be to do any of this next year...

mel2005 · 28/07/2008 18:47

Its been so hot i havent wanted to leave the house.
blooming marvellous has 40% off ALL toys, bedroom and nursery.
i bought 4 baby bouncers and an angelcare baby movement and sound monitor. it has saved me a fortune.

mel2005 · 28/07/2008 22:14

gettingbiggerbird there is a new version carrycot on e-bay
cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mountain-Buggy-Double-Carrycot-for-Urban-Model_W0QQitemZ120288575086QQihZ002QQcategor yZ53681QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

GettingBiggerBird · 29/07/2008 10:11

Mel, you're a star, I'm watching it now.
Not only am I ridiculously affected by the heat already, but my cycle ride seems to be getting almost impossible - it took me twice as long as normal and I was completely breathless by the end of it. There aren't even any hills! I need to get swimming otherwise I will just mould into the sofa and never come out again.

4 baby bouncers!!!

MerryMarigold · 29/07/2008 12:44

GBB, I am watching it too . I love the idea of them being able to sleep together. But think I have decided to get single ones, as I can't get the double carrycot through my door and would actually need to remove babies, remove carrycot and then fold buggy before getting into house! At least with single ones, I am hoping I could unclip and carry baby in still sleeping! Optimistic?!

Can't believe you are cycling! I was greasing a cake tray today and got out of breath . I'm not the fittest person on earth, but purleeeeeeeease!
