Potentially silly question...how do I know what size nipple shields to get?
Still pregnant (39+5) but thinking a good idea to order just to have on standby!

WinterBabyof89 · 26/08/2021 08:26

We had a terrible night too @sarah13xx soul destroying isn’t it. Thankfully no two nights are the same lately so fingers crossed we have a good one tonight!

PurplePansy05 · 26/08/2021 09:12

@WinterBabyof89 That's so true that no two nights are the same. I keep telling myself that when DS is difficult to settle.

All the clever advice about soothing and routines, books, tutorials, NCT, whatever goes out of the window sometimes IME. If my son doesn't want to settle, he won't do it, we just need to survive with lots of feeds and cuddles till he's happier, which is demanding. xx

Has anyone had little tiny blisters after using nipple shields ? That go away after a few minutes ?? Also a good question @ame88 which nipple shields have people used and found best? I just have the boots own make at the moment but thinking of getting the mam ones to go with her bottles but not sure on size 1 or size 2 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Ready2020 OH just played some music on his phone after

@Magik01 thank you I've just downloaded that for future use looks really good!

@Daffodil21 yeah a feed takes a while for us too but DS always used to feed for ages and he was able to latch so I'm okay with that.

biscuitcat · 26/08/2021 09:24

@sarah13xx @WinterBabyof89 joining the bad night club here! DS was being really lazy with his feeding, latching on but not really sucking, and so he was waking up more than every hour as he was still hungry 😓 eventually he settled on DH's chest, which seems to be his favourite place to sleep! I feel like I'm starting to panic at the relentlessness of all of it at the moment - there's no weekend or day off and I'm so tired already xx

Inmypjsagain · 26/08/2021 09:27

Must have been something in the air, terrible night for us too! Poor thing was so sick every time we tried to put him down despite numerous burps, had the next to me at an angle, he couldn’t settle. Now we’re tired, he’s tired… haven’t caught up on the posts properly but just wanted to add that we’re all in this together!!!!!

@Ava50x he was estimated 6lbs 5oz at 38 weeks and was born at 39 weeks 6lbs 11oz. And nipple shield size was lucky dip, but went for larger size as my boobs and nipples look quite big and they worked, not the most scientific method!

Inmypjsagain · 26/08/2021 09:29

Sorry the nipple shield size bit in the message above should have tagged @Millymay13! Sorry… 💤

Inmypjsagain · 26/08/2021 09:51

@lucyrp I’ve got mam size 2, we have the size 1s too and there’s not much difference tbh. I do get some blisters, but they don’t last but it’s still uncomfortable. Baby is same for me, has never latched without, don’t know why 🤷🏼‍♀️

Also third the tommee tippee perfect prep, it’s amazing. Mumsnet is generally not a fan as they’re not NHS approved (the pipes can get mouldy and nhs recommend cooled boiled water in the fridge) but make sure it’s regularly cleaned and with new filters and I’m it’s fine!

Magik01 · 26/08/2021 09:52

Think I jinxed myself last night saying he was asleep. He slept for all of 20 minutes before waking up again so in total was awake from 1-6. Sad

ame88 · 26/08/2021 10:39

@lucyrp after having a look I think I'll go for the MAM size 2! Just seen them on Amazon!

lucyrp · 26/08/2021 10:42

@Inmypjsagain i measured my nipples with OH tape measure 🤣 and they're 17mm so thinking i'll try the 1s to start with and see how we go. happy to buy as many shields as i have to if it means she'll breast feed 🙈 so odd isn't it!

EJT89 · 26/08/2021 10:47

Congrats on the new arrivals - really lovely names and photos that have been shared!

Still waiting for my time to come… was due last Friday and trying every trick in the book but seems baby is perfectly happy where she is!

Have an induction booked for Monday which I’m feeling a bit sad about for some reason - hoping things change before now & then but I’ve had no signs little one is ready to make an appearance!

Just wanted to post to say all the advice and frank conversations about the good bad and ugly bits is really refreshing to read so thank you to all for sharing those experiences - I hope to be able to weigh in with my own experiences soon!
Xxx

WolfMother326 · 26/08/2021 10:58

Hello all,

I have been completely offline the past week adjusting to life with our new baby, who we named Alasdair William. Also been dealing with recovery from the EMCS and finally feeling more myself although still pretty uncomfortable.

It seems that Alasdair has a minor posterior tongue tie, which explains why I've found nursing a little painful on my nipples and have ended up using shields.

Anyway- I'm thinking of buying a hand pump and wondering if anyone has a good recommendation? I know the hakaa was discussed earlier in the thread but can't remember if you all liked it. Also considering the mam hand pump.

Daffodil21 · 26/08/2021 11:19

@ame88 i got the MAM size 2 from Amazon. I didn't realise there were different sizes though and I bought them months ago. The midwife commented on them being a good size

ame88 · 26/08/2021 11:32

@Daffodil21 fab just ordered!
@EJT89 good luck! I have no signs either and wondering if I will need to be induced. Can completely understand your feelings! I hope it all goes well for you!

Ready2020 · 26/08/2021 11:36

Rowan was up from about 3.30 onwards with a giant poo explosion at 7.30 when I was changing an innocent wet nappy she pood and peed again over the mat! I feel oddly OK but I'm sure the lack of sleep will catch up. She's asleep now so I should really be asleep too!

I got the medela contact shields size medium but I think they are too small. I've not used them though as I think it's just something else to get her used to. The midwife thought they could help with nipple pain. Not sure whether to get the large size and give them a go.

biscuitcat · 26/08/2021 11:39

@ame88 I also have the Mam size 2, which I've found really good (though hoping that DS carries on not needing them...). The lactation consultant I spoke to said it was more common for people to buy too small nipple shields and she would advise going for the larger ones, so I did that - they worked well, though I never tried the size 1s so can't compare properly

sarah13xx · 26/08/2021 13:10

@WinterBabyof89 fingers crossed! I have been really lucky with him at night I think and he’s generally not been too bad at going back down but that last night was just awful. Feel for anyone dealing with that every night 🤦🏼‍♀️ He’s been awake a lot today so far so hoping he was maybe just sleeping too much yesterday or something! He’s just projectile vomited in the moses basket while asleep in the living room. He didn’t even wake up as I frantically lifted him out, terrifies me that it could happen during the night 🤦🏼‍♀️

@Inmypjsagain think I’ll try putting the next to me at an angle tonight and see if that stops the sickness issue. He’s just been sick again now, usually he’s only sick at night so not sure what’s up. It’s hard going isn’t it 🙈

@biscuitcat definitely relating to the no weekend or day off thing already! I’m just counting down til Friday night in the hope my partner can do the night time get ups and I can get a decent sleep, although I know that won’t happen because he’ll not do it the way I do it, I’ll be able to hear it all and I’ll end up getting up to help 😂

sarah13xx · 26/08/2021 13:14

@Ready2020 oh no, 3.30 is an early start 😭 I’ve found I can feel okay to get up in the morning but by 3/4pm I can’t stop yawning and barely make it to dinner time. Experienced one of those explosions yesterday too. He’s taken to pee’ing on me only when I’m in the middle of cleaning a dirty nappy. Yesterday he pee’ed while I was doing it so had to whip the new nappy away to get another one, as I was doing that he poo’ed on the changing mat 🤦🏼‍♀️ You just don’t have enough hands to do everything at the same time 🙈

Ava50x · 26/08/2021 13:28

Thanks for all the responses re birth weight. I'm definitely curious to know how accurate the prediction was!

@BertieBotts DS1 was super long at 59cm, nobody could believe it- the midwives all came to have a look at this super long fish! Scans for him were also majorly skewed, they estimated 7.5lb, he was just over 6! my others were a lot more average.

@PurplePansy05 glad I made you laugh! I'm finding it rather un-funny but thanks for your message. Hoping, hoping things start moving soon...

@ame88 @EJT89 fingers crossed we all have our babies soon! Its so hard this waiting isn't it?

Sorry you've all had such rough nights with your newborns. Thats one thing I can't complain about atm!!

PurplePansy05 · 26/08/2021 13:37

Only because you mentioned the Hulk @Ava50x, otherwise I don't envy you one bit. I think the final weeks of pregnancy were worse for me than how I'm feeling now, even when sleep deprived and tired. I actually don't know if I'd ever want to do this again after how I felt in the third trimester with all the added complications, stress and discomfort. I'd certainly think very carefully and I admire those of you who decided to go for it again, and again. Superhero stuff, honestly.

Question re washing temp. My washing machine has a 20C quick wash option which DH and I used a lot before baby to be more environmentally friendly. Fairy is also ok to use in cold wash. Is it OK to put baby clothes and muslins on 20C wash if they aren't stained? Or do they always need to go on 40C? xx

OP posts:
Ava50x · 26/08/2021 13:41

No worries at all, @PurplePansy05! I am in this completely irrational stage so don't take any notice of me!! Yes, third trimester definitely sucks. I must be insane doing this for the third time!!

Ava50x · 26/08/2021 14:13

whoops, that should have been fourth time! I'm not even talking sense anymore...:)

BertieBotts · 26/08/2021 14:16

I think I have a touch of baby blues as have been feeling a bit melancholy and tearful the last couple of days. It's not nearly as bad as it was last time - I had a crap time with birth last time and then the stay in hospital and was just crying everywhere for about 2 weeks afterwards!

We had Alex's one week check up and everything is good. Back to birth weight (except for 20g) yay! And got some eye drops for him as he has a bit of newborn conjunctivitis. His cord fell off in the doctor's office but I have no idea where it went - half expecting to find it in my bra later D:

BertieBotts · 26/08/2021 14:22

Oh loads more messages I didn't see! I don't see why you can't wash baby clothes on cold. I tend to do everything at 40 because I don't feel like the cold washes do anything but that's just me!

BTW if anyone has baby poo stains the secret is sunlight. Stick them in a window or outside to dry (even if it's raining/cloudy, although strong sun works better) and the UV in the sun bleaches the stain right out while not damaging the clothing. I have a general purpose stain remover spray I use before washing and that + sunlight does the trick.

You always need a spare muslin when changing a boy so you can quickly grab and throw over their willy to soak up the stray wees. I'm told it's worse with girls as it pools underneath them getting all their clothes wet.
